Digital Arts Computer Game Making Camp

Jack and Cole spent the week at a Digital Arts Computer Camp learning Game Making. Instead of playing computer games, they spent the week letting their imaginations run wild creating their own games. Jack was very excited tonight telling me about the game that he had built.

National Register of Historical Places - Elfreth's Alley

It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited residential streets in the country, dating back to the early 1700s.

Elfreth's Alley is named for Jeremiah Elfreth, an 18th-century blacksmith and property owner. Among the alley's residents were tradesmen and their families, including shipwrights, silver and pewter smiths, glassblowers, and furniture builders. The Georgian and Federal-style houses and cobblestone pavement of the alley were common in Philadelphia during this time.

Elk Grove Outlaws

I went to an organizational meeting for the Elk Grove Outlaws Baseball team tonight.

Over almost exactly the last year, Jack has played with a tournament baseball team called the Elk Grove Gunners. This was the team that went to Cooperstown. After Cooperstown, nine of the boys from the Gunners and eight of the boys that played together at Cooperstown were on the Laguna 10U Cal Ripken team in the Northern California Tournament. The coach for the Laguna 10U team was one of the assistant coaches for the Gunners.

After the all-star tournament was over, the assistant coach for the Gunners announced that he was starting a new team, the Elk Grove Outlaws. It looks like 11 of the 12 boys from the Gunners team have moved over to the new Outlaws team. The team is currently planning to play six tournaments in September, October and November.

Boy Scout Troop 59 Weekly Meeting (#2)

Jack went to the weekly meeting of Boy Scout Troop 59. With all of the other things that we have had going on over the last couple months, I have been struggling to get Jack engaged and moving forward with Boy Scouts.

Whenever there are five Wednesdays in a month, the fifth one is a fun day. This week every scout was to bring a Frisbee. Jack spent most of the meeting playing disc golf in Elk Grove Park.

a no-hitter! [2009 River Cats versus Bees]

At Raley Field

Sharon, Jack and I went to see the Sacramento River Cats play the Salt Lake City Bees. I got some great tickets right behind home plate (section c, row 1, seats 5, 6 & 7). The weather was great and the game was interesting.

The Salt Lake Bees starter Sean O'Sullivan threw only the second no-hitter in Raley Field history to defeat the River Cats 2-0. O'Sullivan retired the first 18 River Cat batters he faced. He threw 122 pitches, struck out seven batters and walked one.

The only other no-hitter used multiple pitchers. On June 9, 2006, the Portland Beavers used three pitchers for a combined perfect game against Sacramento.

Outlaws versus Laguna 9Us

This video was taken with a iPhone 3GS. I like the video because you can actually see the ball taking off in the upper left corner of the video!

The Laguna 9U Cal Ripken team won the Norcal tournament and will play in the regional tournament in Bakersfield starting next weekend. Looking for some teams to play as a tune-up, they scheduled a scrimmage against the Outlaws.

Jack was 2 for 4 with two strike-outs and a walk. He struck out swinging in his first at-bat. In his second plate appearance, Jack drove a 2 and 0 pitch into deep right center for a double. He hit a hard grounder up the middle in his third plate appearance and was safe at first. Jack struck out looking in his fourth at-bat. He walked in his fifth plate appearance against Joe.

In the field, Jack played four innings at third base, one inning in right field, pitched one inning and played catcher for the last two innings. Jack was effective in one inning the he pitched; he did not allow a run. With the day heating up, Jack caught the last two innings. He was beat by the end of two innings catching Pat and Breyton. I can not remember Jack catching in a game situation since Double AA.

I am not sure what the final score was. In eight innings, the Outlaws pitched 8 different pitchers and got knocked around pretty good. Joe hit a two run homer for the Bullets. The Bullets won by a bunch...

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Tom, Kevin, Eric, Sharon, Jack and I went to see Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Overall, the group enjoyed the movie more than I did. I thought it was a little slow in parts. While it is not fair to compare movies to books, the last two books are so big and cover so much ground that I think even doing three movies does not adequately cover all of the key plot points.

Puertecitos, Mexico

My mother's parents had a couple of trailers on the beach in Puertecitos, Mexico. I can remember going there at least twice as a kid. Left to right in the first picture, my sister Lee Ann, me, my sister Sharon (in the background) and my cousin Kathy. I believe that this picture was taken in April of 1966; we were there over Easter. I have some vivid memories of my maternal grandfather, Keith Abbott, shooting off bottle rockets on the beach in Puertecitos.

Someday, I would like to find my way back there again and walk on the beach...

Walking to Guantanamo

On the way back from the east coast trip, I started reading Walking to Guantanamo. I had heard the author interviewed on the NPR Books podcast last fall. In the last year, I have read Havana Nocturne about the Mob in Cuba in the 1950's and An Unfinished Life about John F. Kennedy. Obviously, Cuba and Castro played a central role in JFK's Presidency. Both of these books sparked my curiosity about Cuba. As result, when I heard the interview I bought the book.

Partly in response to a mid-life crisis, the author treks the length of Cuba. Although he starts off on foot, he ends up traveling by a number of modes of transportation, including a long distance by bike. As he travels along, the author stays with local families. The book provides an interesting view into the Cuban economy, culture and people. Economically, the country appears to be a mess.

The author's passions include bird watching, Cuban music and Caribbean religions. Consequently, you got a dose of those subjects sprinkled throughout the book.

I am intrigued by the idea of an epic journey. After running the 50 miler two years ago, I have been toying with the idea of a larger goal for the future. I am fascinated by the idea of doing a thru-hike on the Pacific Coast Trail from Mexico to Canada.

I really enjoyed the book. Nevertheless, with so many good books in the world, I would not recommend the book unless you have a specific interest in Cuba.

New York Historical Marker - Hartwick Seminary

Oldest Lutheran Theological School in America. Founded 1797 by Rev, John Christopher Hartwick. Located here 1816.

This wall was constructed during the 175th anniversary observances of the founding of Hartwick seminary as a memorial to the graduates and members of Hartwick seminary and academy.

Constructed from the bricks of the seminary annex, it stands on the site of the first Lutheran Theological School in America.

Dedicated May 7, 1972 by Pastor James Craefe, President of the Metropolitan New York Synod, Lutheran Church in American.

Hartwick Seminary was founded in 1797 through the will of John Christopher Hartwick, a Lutheran minister from Germany, who led several mission congregations of early settlers along the Hudson River and the Mohawk River in what is now upstate New York. Shortly after his death, his dream of establishing an institution of higher learning became a reality with the founding of Hartwick Seminary in 1797. The New York State Legislature in 1816 incorporated the new school--the first Lutheran seminary in America--as a classical academy and theological seminary, in the Town of Hartwick. The school moved to its present location in 1928 with land donated by the City of Oneonta, when it was incorporated as the four year Hartwick College. The college's ties to the Lutheran Church ended in the 1960s and now carries no religious affiliation.

Laguna 10Us versus Elk Grove North 10Us

Back to Oakland again... We have driven 1,000 miles back and forth to Oakland this week for the Northern California Cal Ripken 10U Tournament. The Laguna 10Us played the Elk Grove North 10Us. The winner plays Oakland American on Saturday in the championship game. There are four players on the Elk Grove North team that played with Jack on the Elk Grove Gunners at Cooperstown: AD, Dylan, Austin and Keaton.

At the plate, Jack was 1 for 2 with a walk and 2 RBIs. In the bottom of the second, Jack struck out looking on a 3 - 2 pitch. In his defense, the umpire's strike zone was very inconsistent. The Elk Grove North pitcher (Murphy) also pitched extremely well. Through the first three innings, he faced the minimum number of batters and struck out 6 of the first 9 hitters he faced. In the bottom of the fourth with two outs, Cam, Pat and Jack drew successive walks. Pat ran the count to 3 and 2, fouled off four pitches and then walked. Jack ran the count to 3 and 2 and then walked to load the bases. The next batter hit it to the shortstop for the third out. In the bottom of the sixth, Wesley walked. Pat singled to put runners at first and second. Jack ran the count to 1 and 2. Protecting the plate, he drove an outside pitch into right center to score both Wesley and Pat. Talking to Jack afterwards, he said that he actually took his back hand off the bat as he reached for the outside pitch. The next batter hit a grounder to the shortstop to force Jack out at second.

In the field, Jack had a couple of nice plays in the first two innings. With two outs in the top of the first, Dylan hit a rocket right at Jack's head which he easily speared. Dylan played with the Gunners at Cooperstown and is a big kid; bigger than anyone on Laguna. I continue to be amazed at Jack's hand/eye coordination and his hand speed. He clearly did not get these traits from me; the ball would have smacked me in the side of the head before I would have been able to get my glove up. With the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the second, Jack easily fielded a grounder on the left side and tagged third to end the inning. Jack played four innings at third base.

Laguna lost to Elk Grove North by the score of 7 to 2 and was eliminated from the tournament. Elk Grove North plays Oakland American on Saturday at noon; Elk Grove lost to Oakland once already by a score of 5 to 1 last Sunday.

Laguna 10Us versus Oakland American 10Us

We loaded up and headed back to Oakland again, the fourth time in sixth days. The Laguna 10Us are playing Oakland American 10Us. At this point, these are the last two undefeated teams in the tournament. Oakland American won the Northern California Cal Ripken 9U tournament last year, advanced to the regionals and placed third.

At the plate, Jack was 1 for 2 with a walk and a run scored. In his first at-bat in the top of the second inning, Jack drove a 1 - 0 pitch through the left side of the infield for a single. He went to second on a passed ball. Niko hit a ground out that advanced Jack to third. Breyton singled through the right side of the infield to score Jack for the game's first run. This is the second game in a row that Jack has scored the Outlaw's first run. In his second plate appearance in the fourth inning with two out and runners on first and second, Jack struck out swinging on five pitches. This is the first strike out swinging that he has had in the Coopertown or Cal Ripken tournaments. Jack walked on 7 pitches in his third at-bat in the top of the sixth. He was eventually forced out at second on a fielder's choice hit by Breyton.

In the field, Jack played five innings at third base. He had a lot of action. In the first, he took a very high hopper and made a great throw to first to get the runner. In the second, he backhanded a drive down the third base line and made a nice throw to first, but the runner was called safe. There were two other balls hit right down the third base line: one that he did not get to and one that bounced straight up off the bag. Jack probably should have tried to take the second one in front of the bag, rather than trying to backhand it behind the base. In the second inning, a ball was hit back to the Niko at the pitcher, his throw pulled Jack off the bag, but the runner took a big turn. Jack and Cooper were able to get the runner out in a run down.

Laguna scratched out two runs in the second and third innings to lead 2 to 0 after two and a half. Oakland scored two runs in the bottom of the third on a single and a triple. The bottom fell out in the third of the fourth; with two outs, Oakland scored four runs on four singles and a walk. Laguna got one run back in the top of the sixth. Pat reached base on an error and then Jack walked. Pat eventually scored on a single by Josh.

The final score was Oakland American 6, Laguna 3. Laguna drops into the loser bracket and plays Elk Grove North on Friday night at 4 p.m. The winner of that game will play Oakland American on Saturday at 12 p.m.

Laguna 10Us versus North Area 10Us

Sharon, Jack, John, Cole and I drove down to Oakland in the afternoon for the continuing Northern California Cal Ripken 10U tournament. Jack's team, the Laguna 10Us, were scheduled to play the North Area (Sacramento) 10Us. This turned out to be the most exciting baseball game that I have ever seen Jack play!

At the plate, Jack was 0 for 2 with a walk and a run scored. In his first at-bat in the second inning, Jack hit the first pitch back to the mound and was thrown out at first. Jack came up in the fourth innning with two outs and the pitcher carrying a no hitter! Jack walked on six pitches. Niko and Josh followed him with singles. Jack took a big turn around third on Josh's single, the right fielder's throw home was high into the backstop and Jack raced home to score the game's first run. Jack came up in the fifth inning with Pat on third and two outs. With take signs from the coach, he sat on a couple of strikes, ran the count to 3 and 2, finally hit a sharp grounder to the shortstop and was thrown out at first.

In the field, Jack played 6 innings at third base. He handled the ball only once taking a throw from Cooper for the force at third base to end the first inning.

The Laguna Outlaws starting pitcher struggled. After two singles, a strike out and four consecutive walks, the coaches made a pitching change. By the time they got out of the top of the first, they had given up 4 runs. The next three Laguna pitchers (Breyton, Niko and Josh) did not allow a hit. Jack scored a run in the fourth. The team added two more in the fifth to make the score 4 to 3 when they came to bat in the bottom of the sixth. Niko walked. Josh doubled into right field to put the runners on second and third. With no outs and the count 3 and 0, Breyton ignored a take sign from the coaches and blooped a single down the first base line to drive in two runs and win the game. You could have knocked me over with a feather.

Laguna will play Thursday night against Oakland American.

Laguna 10Us versus River Park 10Us

Up early again, we headed back to Oakland for the Northern California Cal Ripken 10U tournament. Although some people stayed overnight, we decided to drive back and forth. Laguna played against River Park (Sacramento). Sharon grew up in the River Park area of Sacramento.

I was initially a little worried about the game. River Park ended up getting a bye on Saturday. I was worried that we were going to face fresh pitching, while we would be throwing our fourth, fifth and sixth starters.

At the plate, Jack was 2 for 2 with 3 RBIs. In his first at-bat in the bottom of the third, Jack drilled the first pitch into right center to drive in Pat. He ended up getting doubled off second on an out by Louie. With the bases loaded, Jack pushed the second pitch through the right side in the bottom of the fourth inning to drive in Matt and Cam. These RBIs gave Laguna an 11 run lead and ended the game.

Jack pitched the third and fourth innings. He threw 36 pitches with 20 going for strikes. Jack struck out one batter and had three balls hit back to him that he fielded and threw the runner out at first. With a couple of errors in the outfield, Jack gave up one earned run and three total runs.

With all 12 of their players playing, Laguna beat River Park by the score of 15 to 4 in four innings. They will play the winner of the Vallejo versus North Area (Sacramento) on Tuesday.

Laguna 10Us versus River Park 10Us Box Score

Jack and I went through the score book from today's game and he actually typed the information into the template. Scoring these games is more than a little bit of an adventure. There are some judgement calls on what to score as an error. I have not been scoring throwing errors that advance the runners as an error.

Today, with the bases loaded, Cam hit a fly ball right at the center fielder who not only misplayed the ball off his glove but let then let the ball get by him. Running hard, Cam almost caught up with the runner who was on first and came home to score. I ended up not scoring this as a home run and a grand slam. I am not sure what is "right," particularly with ten year olds.

Laguna 10Us versus Washington Manor 10Us

Up early, Sharon, Jack and I headed to Oakland for the Northern California Cal Ripken 10U baseball tournament. This tournament continues over the next week and Jack's team will continue to play until they lose two games. Their opening game was against Washington Manor (San Leandro).

At the plate, Jack was 1 for 4 with a run scored and a steal. In the top of the first with two out and runners on first and second, Jack hit a hard grounder that went under the shortstop's glove. Jack was safe at first. Moved to third on walks to Josh and Breyton, Jack stole home to score the third run of the game. Jack hit a hard grounder to the right of the shortstop in the bottom of the second and Cam was forced out at second on a fielder's choice. Jack ended the inning on third base. In the third, Jack hit a grounder to the left of the shortstop and was thrown out at first on end the inning. In the bottom of the fifth with the score 12 to 3 and Pat on third, the coaches asked him to punt in order to score Pat and finish the game on the ten run rule. Jack pushed a punt passed the pitcher and was safe at first; Pat stayed at third. After Josh was intentionally walked, James grounded out to first to drive in a run and end the game.

In the field, Jack played the first and second innings at third, the third and fourth innings in left field and the fifth inning at third. Oddly, he never touched the ball.

The Laguna Outlaws beat the Washington Manor team by the score of 13 to 3 in five innings. The box score for the game is here.

Laguna plays River Park tomorrow morning. Jack is tentatively scheduled to pitch the third and fourth innings.

Laguna 11U versus Elk Grove North 11U

The coaches of Jack's all star decided that they wanted to take the team to Galt to watch the Laguna 11U all stars play the Elk Grove North 11U all stars in the Northern California championship game. Jack and I went with the team. Two of Jack's long-time classmates were playing; Joe plays for Laguna, while Connor plays for Elk Grove North. Laguna won by a score of 8 to 5. They advance to a regional Cal Ripken tournament in Fallon, Nevada. Almost unbelievably, the Laguna 8Us and 9Us both won their Northern California tournaments and are advancing to the regionals.

After the game, the group headed back to Elk Grove for some batting practice.

The Northern California 10U tournament starts tomorrow morning in Oakland. Jack's team plays Washington Manor in their first game. This is a double elimination tournament. After the Cooperstown experience, I am frankly not sure what to expect.

The Last of the Mohicans

Looking for a book to read on the East Coast trip during June, I settled on The Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper. The book appealed to me on three different levels.

First, Cooperstown is named for James Fenimore Cooper's father. James lived there as a child and during several periods during his adult life. After serving as a seaman, James returned to Cooperstown and settled at Fenimore Farm, the site of the Fenimore Art Museum, as a gentleman farmer. Sharon and I went through the Fenimore Art Museum.

Second, The Last of the Mohicans is set in Upper New York State about an hour north of Cooperstown. During my trail run while we were at Cooperstown, the terrain that I was running through felt very much like the descriptions on the countryside in the book. Much of James Fenimore Cooper's writing is based his childhood experiences in and around Lake Otsego and the surrounding area.

Third, the center point of the story is the massacre that follows the surrender of Fort William Henry during the French and Indian War. Since reading His Excellency, the George Washington biography, I have been intrigued by the French and Indian Wars. Washington's reputation really has it roots in several battles in this war.

Written in 1825, It was one of the most popular English-language novels of its time. Criticized for its long sentences and formal prose, I found the book very readable and well paced. I enjoyed the book a great deal.

Ostdawa Run

On Tuesday while we were at Cooperstown, I ran on the trails outside the house that we were renting. Although the trails were very wet from all of the rain, I had a great run. I came across deer and wild turkeys. In less than 1.5 miles, the trail climbed almost 500 feet to the top of the ridge, including two particularly steep sections. Although a fairly short run, my legs were sore for a week afterward.

I particularly enjoyed the run because the terrain was very similar to the descriptions of the countryside in the book that I read while we were on the trip: The Last of the Mohicans.

Laguna 10U versus Elk Grove 10U

With the Norcal Cal Ripken 10U tournament scheduled for this coming weekend, the coaches of Jack's all star team have been trying to arrange a number of games against other teams. We went to Woodland last Friday night to play, but the other team did not show up. We were supposed to play a north valley team on Saturday, but they canceled and the team had a regular practice instead. We finally got a chance to play tonight against the Elk Grove North U10 team at Morse. There are three kids on the Elk Grove North team that played with the Gunners at Cooperstown: Austin, Dillon and Keaton.

The game was a little like two prize fighters dancing around each other. There is a chance that we could play again in the tournament next week. As a result, neither team was showcasing its best pitching or fielding its strongest defense. Jack's team, the Outlaws, used all thirteen players equally in the field and at bat over the course of the eight inning game.

At the bat, Jack was 1 for 2 with a walk and a run scored. With Josh on second, Jack hit a pitch hard to the left of the shortstop in his first at-bat. Taking his eye off the ball to look at Josh, the shortstop bobbled the ball, tried to make the throw to first anyway and Jack was easily safe on the error with Josh advancing to third. Jack eventually came around to score. Leading off the fifth inning with his second plate appearance, Jack hit one hard up the middle. The shortstop knocked the ball down, but did not attempt a throw. Jack was forced out at second on a fielder choice by Trevor. In his last at-bat with one out and runners on first and second in the bottom of the eighth, Jack walked to load the bases. The next batter, Breyton, drove in the winning run when he was hit by a pitch.

In field, Jack played four innings at third base, one inning in left field and pitched one inning. Although a little wild, he pitched pretty well: striking out one batter and getting two batters to ground out back to him. They gave up two unearned runs in the inning he pitched on a couple of errors and a couple of passed balls. At third, he had only one opportunity. Jack fielded a grounder and flipped it to Cooper covering third trying to get Austin.

The Laguna 10U all stars scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to beat the Elk Grove North 10U team by a score of 6 to 5.

National Baseball Hall of Fame

On Saturday night, Philip asked Jack and I what we liked best about the National Baseball Hall of Fame. I got a chance to wander through the hall by myself on Saturday and with the team on Thursday. The part that I really enjoyed was the hall with the plaques for the players; this is very well done. I got a kick out of seeing Goose Goosage's plaque. Randy and I had a chance to meet Goosage and get our picture taken with him at an IBM event twenty years ago.

2009 Fourth of July Party

Sharon, Jack and I spent the afternoon and evening at a 4th of July party at Cunningham's house. The group included the Sanborns. The kids swam in the pool, John barbecued hot dogs, bratwurst and hamburgers and we finished the night with fireworks. Although both Sharon and I were feeling under the weather, we had a very nice time. Jack had a wonderful time playing in the pool and then lighting fireworks.

2009 East Coast Trip - Day 13 - Sacramento plus more baseball

Up early, Sharon and I packed. We left Pat and Benard's house about 7:45 AM EST and had an hour drive to the Philadelphia International Airport. We did not leave ourselves enough time to check the luggage, get through security and get some food for the flights. We were still trying to buy some food when they started queuing up to board the flight.

We also made one other tactical error. We did not pay close enough attention to the stops on the flight that we had scheduled back to Sacramento. Both of us thought that it made just one stop. Unfortunately, it was scheduled to fly from Philadelphia to Denver to Los Angeles and then to Sacramento. This made for a long day.

Stopping at the house about 5:30 PM PST (almost 13 hours after we left Pat's), we unloaded the luggage and Jack changed into his baseball gear. Jack had been concerned all day that we would get back to Sacramento in time for him to play. We headed to Morse where the Laguna 10U Outlaws were playing the Galt 10U team. We showed up about 5 minutes before the game started.

Jack pitched the second inning, played third base for three innings and finished the game at first base. With some help from Breyton making a nice stretch, Jack made a play on a slow roller up the third base line while he was at third. At bat, he was 1 for 1 with a walk. In his first at-bat, he fell behind 1 and 2, fouled off a couple of pitches and eventually walked; he was forced out at third later in the inning. Jack hit a 1 and 2 pitch into right center for a double in his second plate appearance driving in a run. He eventually came around to score. Given how much we had traveled that day, I was frankly amazed at how well he played. With all 13 of the Outlaws players getting time, Laguna beat Galt by the score of 11 to 1.

With the Northern California Cal Ripken 10U tournament scheduled to start July 11, Jack is going to play a lot of baseball over the next two weeks.
