To New York City 2008

I spent the day literally winding my way to New York City. Dropping Jack at school, I took a late morning jetBlue flight from Sacramento to Long Beach. This was my first experience with the Long Beach airport. If the rest of the terminal is anything like the jetBlue gates, the place has to be one of the most rundown airports in the country. The jetBlue gates are in what appears to temporary buildings.

From Long Beach, I caught a flight to JFK that stopped in Las Vegas. Taxiing to the gate after landing in Vegas, I could see the Luxor and the Excalibur. This felt very odd since I did not know that the flight was stopping in Vegas.

One of the interesting things about jetBlue is that there is a DirecTv screen at each seat. I always carry a couple of books and read when I fly. In spite of the fact that I was really enjoying the science fiction book I was reading [Hugo Award Winning Spin], I ended up watching the second half of the Wizards versus Cavs playoff game and having a couple of Heinekens.

The plane got to JFK before 11:00 p.m. EST. I caught a cab into Manhattan and was in the room before midnight. I am spending the next couple of nights at the Hilton Times Square.

2008 AAA Baseball Game #9

Jack played in his ninth baseball game of the 2008 little league baseball season against the Cardinals. After this weekend's break, they will be playing the National League teams for a second time. The Padres beat the Cardinals earlier in the season.

At the plate, Jack was 1 for 2 with a walk. He walked in his first at-bat. Jack stole seond, stole third and then stole home on a wild pitch to score the Padres' first run. He struck out in his second at bat. Jack lined one down the third base line in his third at-bat for an RBI. Again, he stole second, third and home to score.

Jack played five innings at shortstop. The kids are starting to hit more grounders to the left side. Jack cleanly fielded four attempts and threw the runner out at first. In the fourth inning, a runner was stealing from second to third. The ball from the catcher was overthrown and the runner started home. Backing up the third baseman, Jack fielded the ball and gunned the runner down at home.

The weather was miserable; it was very windy. The kids were very flat at the beginning of the game. The Padres fell behind 8 to 2. With runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, their late inning rally fell short and they lost by a score of 9 to 7. Their record is now 5 wins and 4 losses.

220,000 Miles

I have more than 220,000 miles on our 1998 AWD Ford Explorer. There is getting to be a lot of drive train noise. The plan is to replace it next month.

April Webelos #1 Den Meeting

While I was winding my way back from a meeting at Glen Cove, Phil picked up Tim and Jack at school and took them to the April meeting of their Cub Scout den at Lichtenberger Park. All eight of the boys in the den showed up. They worked on the requirements for their scientist activity badge.

2008 Laguna Youth Baseball Travelers All Star Tryout #1

I took Jack to the Laguna Youth Baseball Travelers 9 and under All Star Tryout. There were about 25 kids trying out for 10 spots. It was a long hot afternoon; the tryout lasted almost 4 hours in 90 degree weather.

Split into three groups, the kids took infield, caught fly balls, took a turn at the plate and got timed running the bases. Jack did solidly. It will be interesting to see how it turns out. There were clearly a number of other players that the two coaches knew pretty well.

There is a second tryout next Sunday.

Masque Ristorante

Sharon and I went to dinner at Masque Ristorante in El Dorado Hills.

On the way there, we stopped at Jennings Wine Cellar in Elk Grove for a tasting. This was not a very good experience. The customer service was not good. They were out of the wines that we wanted to taste. The wines that we ended up tasting were not very good.

The experience at Masque was much better. We had a great table in the corner. Sharon had a foie gras appetizer (Fegato) and lamb loin (Agnello), while I had a Romana salad and the Risotto Special (seafood and very spicy). We split a pasta dish. The meal and the service was good, although Sharon kept saying that the food was not as good as Ella's.

2008 Laguna Youth Baseball Hit-A-Thon

Jack and I went to the Laguna Youth Baseball Hit A Thon with his team. Each player got five batting practice pitches to try and hit the ball as far as he could. The idea was that each player would get pledges and earn money for the league depending on how far he hit the balls. This is not Jack's forte. He is a contact hitter and got a couple of solid hits.

There is no game this weekend.

Drew & Jack

Drew has been staying with us since Monday trying to finish up work on some recordings at the Paradise Studio.

Sutter's Fort DVD

Sharon, Jack and I went to St. Joseph's hall to watch a DVD of our day at Sutter's Fort with the other families in his class. The parents hired someone to video the whole day. The kids brought sleeping bags and ate popcorn. Running a little over an hour, the DVD is a nice memento of the day. The DVD included an interview with each of the kids talking about their character. Afterwards, there were a number of gifts to the parents that had helped make the day a reality.

Five Years

The first post in this weblog was five years ago today. I wrote about a trip that Drew and I had taken to Southern California to check out UC Irvine. Titled Shopping Colleges and Kindergartens, it remains one of my favorite of the more than 3,500 posts that I have written in the last five years.

April 2008 Cub Scout Pack Meeting

Jack and I went to the April 2008 meeting of his Cub Scout Pack. After a few skits, some magic tricks and some awards, the boys worked by making rockets out of large soda bottles. The pack is going get together on May 18 for a picnic and launch all of the rockets.

Sutter's Fort Environmental Living Program Day 2

At night, groups take turns keeping a “night watch” while the others are sleeping. Less than an hour after I had laid down, one of the parents came to wake up my group. We had a heck of a time waking up a couple of the kids.

Our first stop was the armory. One of the parents had made wooden rifles for all of the kids.

We spent the next 30 minutes going around the fort checking the door and windows. Two adults spent the night playing the role of bandits. After checking a wanted poster and following a trail of clues, the kids captured the bandits trying to steal cookies from the kitchen. The kids tied up the bandits and took them to jail. Afterwards, we fed the kids some hot chocolate and cookies and then put them back to bed. We were up for about 45 minutes, from 12:15 a.m. to 1:00 a.m.

The bell to get up rang about 7:00 a.m. We got everyone up and started to pack up all of the stuff. Breakfast was cinnamon rolls that the kids had help make in the bakery the day before. We then spent over an hour sweeping, vacuuming and policing the yard. By the time, we were released it was almost 9:00 a.m. and I had spent almost 25 straight hours at Sutter Fort.

Sutter's Fort Environmental Living Program Day 1

The parents and kids of Jack's fourth grade class have spent the last two and a half months preparing for their participation in the Sutter's Fort Environmental Living Program. This is a special program that allows California school children to “live” history. The students, along with their teacher and trained parent helpers, spend 24 hours portraying characters of 1840s California and partaking in the various trade activities and entertainment of the era. Only about 40 schools a year get a chance to participate in the program.

I got to Sutter's Fort about 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning and spent about an hour and a half unloading the cars and helping everyone get set-up for the day. Sharon dropped Jack at school and got to the fort a little after eight. The kids carpooled from school to the train station in old Sacramento. From there, they took horse drawn wagons to Sutter's Fort. By the time the kids arrived, it was almost 9:45 a.m.

As part of the program, each of the kids was assigned a real person from the 1840's. They researched their character and showed up at the fort dressed as their character. The parents were also assigned characters and came dressed in costumes typical of those that would have been seen around the fort in the 1839 to 1849 historical period. Jack's character was James Reed [a survivor of the Donner Party], Sharon's was Margaret Reed and mine was Martin Murphy, Sr. After a welcome ceremony, lots of pictures and a short speech by "John Sutter" [Johnny], we started into the structured part of the day about 10:30 a.m.

There were nine stations that the kids rotated through. These stations were designed to simulate jobs that would have been done around the Fort. These included: candle making; trapping; basketry; period kitchen; carpentry; trade store and rope making; bakery, spinning and weaving; blacksmith and immigrant wagon. The kids actually worked making candles, rope, baskets and a small wooden bench that they will take home. At bakery, the kids helped make the bread that we had with dinner.

Working with one other parent, I spent the day working on the immigrant wagon. We talked about the trip to California, the animals used to pull the wagon, the parts of the wagon and had the kids work loading or unloading it.

Sharon had one of the hardest jobs. She worked in the outside bakey. She worked with the kids churning butter and building the fire in the oven.

Before lunch, the kids got mail call. They received letters written to their characters. After lunch, the kids portraying the key people in the Bear Flag Revolt performed a skit that included the firing of the fort's cannon.

After we finished the afternoon sessions, the kids did some square dancing. They have been practicing square dancing in PE at school.

Several of the parents had spent all afternoon cooking chicken and tri-tip over an open fire for dinner. Grandparents, siblings and others showed up for dinner which included tri-tip, chicken, salad, pasta and bread. We had the bread and butter for dinner that the kids made during the day.

After dinner, there was some professional entertainment. Two people led the group in some line and reel dancing for about an hour.

The group then moved upstairs in the main building. Sharon headed for home at this point. The kids were entertained with music for another hour. This segment included getting the kids up on stage to play instruments during some of the numbers. This ended about 9:30 p.m. and we started to get the kids organized for bed.

Orginally, I did not have an evening assignment. I brought my backpacking tent with the intention of setting up in the yard by myself. It turned out that I had been assigned responsibility for a group of five kids including Jack overnight. I had to get them to the bathroom, have them brush their teeth, get them bedded down for the night and watch over them for the night. After some initial running amok over which groups were going to sleep where, I got them organized in one half of a downstairs building. We turned the lights off about 10:40 p.m.

I spent some time sitting around the cooking fires with some of the other dads and finally laid down at about 11:15 p.m.

2008 AAA Baseball Game #8 - Home Run!

Jack played in his ninth game of the 2008 little league season against the Giants. This was probably his best all round game of the season.

At the plate, Jack was 2 for 3. Leading off the top of the first inning against a big hard throwing left handed pitcher, he ran the count to 3 and 2 and then struck out. In the second inning, Jack got up again. With the count 2 and 2, runners on first and second and working to protect the plate, Jack drove one deep down the first base line. He cruised into third base and started towards home. The second baseman took the cut-off and threw wildly towards home. Jack raced home and slide under the tag of the scrambling catcher. The pitcher for the other team pitched the first 1 2/3 innings; he walked eight, struck out six, allowed six runs and gave up only two hits, Jack's "home run" and a single by the big clean-up hitter. In his final at-bat, Jack singled up the middle.

Jack had a number of nice defensive plays in the field. In the bottom of the third, one of the bigger kids on the other team drove one deep in the gap in left center. Jack moved into short left center to take the cut-off throw. As the kid ran towards third, Jack threw a strike to the third baseman and the runner was out by ten feet. Playing short for five innings, he had a number of balls hit to him for the first time this season. He cleanly handled three grounders, and with some help from the first baseman, threw out the runners.

The Padres held on to win by the score of 7 to 6 in six innings. Their record for the season is now 5 wins and 3 losses.

Napa Bike Ride

On Thursday, Sharon took off for Napa and did a 20 mile bike ride along the Silverado Trail. I generated a KML file of her ride from the Garmin Forerunner 201 GPS. Using the embedded Google Map shown below, it is possible to zoom in and out, switch to a satellite or map view and explore the route she rode. Using the satellite view and the highest zoom view, you can see an astonishing level of detail.

Dinner at the Cunningham's

After Jack and Cole's baseball game, we headed over to the Cunningham's house. They barbecued and we finished the night in the hot tub.

2008 AAA Baseball Game #7

Jack played in his seventh baseball game of the 2008 little league session. Cole was on the other team. Jack and Cole played on the same team for four years (t-ball, rookie and two seasons of single A). We have gotten to be good friends with Cole's parent in the ensuing years.

Jack was 2 for 4 at the plate. In his first at bat, Cole struck him out. Jack got ahead in the count 3 - 0, but Cole battled back. Jack drove a pitch into right field in his second at bat. He came around to score. In his third plate appearance, Jack lifted one into right field between the right and center fielders. Again, he came around to score. Jack got jammed in his fourth at bat and popped out to the third baseman.

Jack played shortstop for four innings. Ranging far to his left, he made a nice stop on a shot up the middle. On the move, he made a throw to first, but not in time to get the runner. After the game, Jack said to me that "the pros make that play look so easy, but it is really hard throw." Jack ended the game by fielding a grounder up the middle and tagging Cole out as he was coming to second base.

The Padres jumped out to an early lead and won the game by a score of 10 to 4. Their record is now 4 wins and 3 losses.

One of the odd things about AAA is the range in the size of the kids; there are 9, 10, 11 and 12 year olds. While Jack is not the smallest kid I have seen playing AAA in the last month, he is the smallest on his team and the youngest by almost 6 months. The biggest on our team is an 11 year old that we played with last year. The picture shown below shows the two of them in the bottom of the first. Jack bats lead off, while Joseph bats clean-up.

2008 SEAs Dinner and Auction

Becky, Tom, Marlene and Philip stopped at the house for a quick drink. Afterwards, we went to the SEAs dinner and silent/live auctions. Timmy and Kathy met us there. The event had a Hawaiian theme this year.

This is one of the main fund raisers for Jack's school. It is the ninth year that they have had the auction and the sixth year that we have gone. In a change from previous years, it was held at the Elk Grove SES Hall, rather than the St. Joseph's Parish Hall.

With the change in venue, they did a couple of new things this year. After dinner, they had David Garibaldi paint four paintings (Tiger Woods, Ray Charles, Jesus Christ and Michelangelo's Hands Of God And Man). Garibaldi is billed as a performance artist; I actually saw him at half-time of a King's game this season. They auctioned off the four paintings during the live auction.

The event also included a live band after the live auction. The band was Marty Dread and the Native Elements.

Settling up the live and silent auction items turned into more than a little bit of fiasco. Unlike past years where it ran pretty smoothly, we stood in line about 35 or 40 minutes and than gave up.

Racetrack opened in 1899 and had racing sessions until it burned down in 1964. Many famous horses raced and won here.

In 1942, Tanforan became a temporary assembly center for over 4,000 persons of Japanese Ancestry who were to be interned for the duration of World War II.

The temporary detention camps (also known as 'assembly centers') represent the first phase of the mass incarceration of 97,785 Californians of Japanese ancestry during World War II. Pursuant to Executive Order 9066 signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on February 19, 1942, thirteen makeshift detention facilities were constructed at various California racetracks, fairgrounds, and labor camps. These facilities were intended to confine Japanese Americans until more permanent concentration camps, such as those at Manzanar and Tule Lake in California, could be built in isolated areas of the country. Beginning on March 30, 1942, all native-born Americans and long-time legal residents of Japanese ancestry living in California were ordered to surrender themselves for detention.

4th Grade: Art Lesson F

Sharon spent Monday afternoon as the art docent for Jack's class. The lesson looked at paintings of horses and how artists like to show its graceful form, its muscles, shiny coat, and its mane and tail. Some artists show the horse in great detail; others want to depict the feeling of movement, color and excitement associated with horses. To illustrate these different styles, the lesson looked at three paintings depicting horses: An Unscheduled Stop by Charles Russell, Fairman Rogers Four In Hand by Thomas Eakins, and Market Preparation by Currier & Ives.

For their art project, the class learned how to use the value of color to produce a charcoal shaded picture of a horse’s head.

2008 Kings versus Spurs

Dashing away from Jack's baseball game on Monday night, I met Larkin at the Sacramento Kings versus San Antonio Spurs Basketball game, the last home game of the season. When we draw the season tickets, I always try to get both the first and last homes games of the year.

Although the Kings were playing without Artest, Martin or Miller, it was a very entertaining game. Both Garcia and Douby had three point attempts in the last 11 seconds to tie the game, but missed. The Spurs won the game by a score of 101 to 98.

For the Kings, John Salmons was 11 for 19 from the field and 7 for 8 from the line for 29 points. For the Spurs, Tony Parker was 12 from 22 from the field and 7 for 9 from the line for 32 points. I was disappointed that Ginobili missed his third straight game with a strained left groin.

Larkin and I finished the night in the Skyline Lounge upstairs in Arco Arena until they kicked us out.

The Kings had 7 wins and 7 losses in games that I saw in person during the 2007-2008 season. This is an improvement over a 5 and 9 record in games I saw in person during the 2006-2007 season.

I am very encouraged by Theus' coaching and have enjoyed watching the team this year. Even if the Kings can improve further next year, I do not believe that they can make the play-offs in the Western Conference. Nevertheless, our group is going to renew the season tickets for another year!

2008 AAA Baseball Game #6

Jack played in his sixth game of the 2008 Little League season against the Mets.

Jack continues to get on base; he was 2 for 3 at the plate. In each of his first two at bats, he hit a pitch up the middle that was deflected by the pitcher. He reached base safely and eventually scored both times.

The umpire was consistently calling a large strike zone. The first pitch of his third at bat was a called strike up under his chin. The second pitch was wild and thrown behind him. As he dove to get out of the way, the ball nicked the bat and the umpire called a second strike. Completely flustered at that point, he struck out of the third pitch.

Jack played five innings at shortstop. Continuing the trend for most of the season, not very many balls are being hit to the left side of the infield.

The Padres won the game by a score of 11 to 4. Their record for the season is 3 wins and 3 losses.

Sacramento Dog Show

While I worked in the yard, Sharon and Jack met Tommy, Becky, Eric and Rosemary at the Sacramento Dog Show. As they were leaving, they called me and said that they wanted to get a Havanese!?!

The group concluded the outing by going to an early dinner at Buca di Beppo.

Sharon, Jack and I finished the day going to a late dinner at Todo un Poco Pizza & Bistro in Elk Grove.

2008 AAA Baseball Game #5

Jack played in his fifth game of the 2008 little league season against the Cardinals.

He continues to make good contact with the ball. On Friday night, he and Tim hit baseballs against a pitching machine; this extra practice is paying off. Jack was 2 for 3. In his first at-bat, he walked for the first time this season and eventually came around to score. He singled into left center in his second at-bat and again came around to score. In his third at-bat, Jack singled on a sharp grounder that bounced off the shin of the third baseman. His last at bat was his hardest hit. Jack lined one right at the shortstop. Unfortunately, the other team had the tallest kid at shortstop and he was barely able to jump straight up and snag the ball.

Based on the statistics for the team posted by the coach, Jack is batting .500 with an on-base percentage of .524.

Jack continues to play just shortstop. He played four innings of a five inning game there.

The Padres scored seven runs in the top of the first inning. They held on to win by a score of 14 to 11 in five innings. Their record is now 2 wins and 3 losses.

Baseball History Podcast

On the mornings that I drop Jack at school, he and I will often listen to PRI's The World Geo Quiz Podcast. The World's Geo Quiz tests your knowledge of world geography and introduces people and places around the globe.

With baseball season in full swing, I was looking for a baseball podcast. I found the Baseball History Podcast. It is the perfect length; it usually takes a little more than 10 minutes to get Jack to school and the podcast is about 11 minutes long. The first one we listened to looked at the life and career of Willie Mays. Jack and I had stood next to the Willie May's statue outside AT&T Park last year waiting for the Laskin's. There are almost 190 of the Baseball History Podcasts in iTunes covering people and places.

2008 AAA Baseball Game #4

Jack played in his fourth game of the 2008 baseball season against the Dodgers. One of his classmates, Jeffrey, was on the other team.

Jack was 1 for 3 from the plate. He was out on a grounder to the infield, out on a pop-up to second and safe on a line drive down the third base line. His classmate was pitching when he hit the single.

Jack also made a couple of good plays in the field. He charged a grounder up the middle and threw Jeffrey out at first. He also caught a relay throw from center field and tagged out a runner trying to advance to second.

With the score tied 4 to 4 in the top of the sixth, the Padres gave up 3 runs and lost 7 to 4 in sixth innings. It was a very well played game. Last week, it took the boys 2 hours and 20 minutes to play 5 innings. Tonight, a six inning game lasted 1 and 20 minutes.

The Padres have 1 win and 3 losses.

Blue Anchor Building

When we parked to go to the California Museum of History, Women & the Arts, I got out of the car and was looking at the entry way and plaque for this building. You can see Sharon's car parked to the left of the door.

This Mission/Spanish Revival building was designed by firm of Starks and Flanders, Architects and Engineers. The catalog of works by Starks and Flanders is formidable, including the Fox Senator (1924), the Elks Temple (1925), the Alhambra (1927), the U.S. Post Office and Courthouse (1932), the Marysville City Hall (1939), and countless small commercial projects and residences. The work of Starks and Flanders helped fashion much of the architectural character of greater Sacramento and numerous Sacramento Valley communities.
