Song for 2024

As I said after we saw A Complete Unknown, I was surprised to realize that I don't have a Bob Dylan song in the Soundtrack for my Life. One of my roommates during my freshman year in college played a lot of Dylan. The song Hurricane came out in November of 1975; the roommate played it frequently.

I thought about using Timothée Chalamet's cover of Like A Rolling Stone for my 2024 song. But when I went back and listened to Hurricane, I had an immediate emotional connection.

My song for 2024 is Hurricane by Bob Dylan.

Song for 2023

I have been meaning to add a Taylor Swift song to the Soundtrack for My Life. From the Eras Tour to her very visible relationship with Travis Kelce, Taylor kind of owned 2023.

I have been undecided about what song to add. I have finally settled on Shake It Up. I have had this song on my running playlist for the last year. It has a strong beat.

Song for 2022

Drew and Morgan are both accomplished musicians. The Soundtrack for My Life includes several of their songs.

From late 2016 to May of 2022, Drew lived in a house on Glen Tower Street in Beachwood Canyon in Southern California. He called it Mirror Wall Studios. Last year, Drew released an album of songs that he had written while he lived there called Songs from Mirror Wall.

My song for 2022 is Taste of Rain by The Guest and The Host from the album Songs from Mirror Wall.

Song for 2020

I use five different applications as part of my ongoing fitness routines. These include Apple Activity, Peloton, RunKeeper, Pedometer++ and Withings.

When you are in a class on the Peloton bike or in the app and you hear a song you like, you can easily add it to an Apple Music Playlist [My Peloton Music by heringer]. One song that I heard on the bike has really stuck with me. It is now featured in my running playlist; it has a great beat for running.

The song for 2020 is Return of the Mack.

Song for 2019

In late 1998, I bought a Diamond Media Rio MP3 player.   I downloaded a number of songs from the Internet and primarily used the Rio while I was running.

One of the songs that I downloaded was Old Dun Cow by Seamus Kennedy.  I realized last year that the MP3 had survived twenty years.  The song had made it's way from my IBM Thinkpad at the time through a series of PCs to iTunes and was on my iPhone.  It is featured on my current running playlist.

The song for 2019 is Old Dun Cow.

Song for 2018

In March of 2018, Sharon, Jack and I saw Hamilton at the Richard Rogers Theater on Broadway. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s smash Broadway show celebrating the life of Founding Father and American icon Alexander Hamilton is based on the biography by Ron Chernow that I read in 2017.

I really enjoyed the play. Sharon and I have both been playing the soundtrack a lot over the last year.

The song for 2018 is Alexander Hamilton (Original Boardway Cast Recording) by the cast of Hamilton.

Song for 2017

Drew left Milo Greene in late 2015. In the last three years, he has focused on song writing, producing at his own Mirror Wall Studio and recording some of his own music. He released some music as The Guest and the Host.

The song for 2017 is Remedy by the The Guest and the Host.

[Note to self], going back into 2014, Drew worked with a couple of guys in Nashville on an album of music that has never really seen the light of day. Calling themselves The Proper Gentlemen, I really enjoyed the initial rough cut of the album. One cut from the album is here. I need to incorporate at least one of the songs in my soundtrack at some point!

Song for 2016

I have a playlist on my iPhone that I use when I run outside. It morphs slowly over time as I add and subtract songs and fuss with the order of the songs. When the weather is nice, my typical run is two laps around Ancil Hoffman Park. I am always trying to find the right rhythm for different stages of the run.

The playlist includes a couple of songs by Adele. In particular, ever since the SNL skit, I have always had Hello in head.

The song for 2016 is Hello by Adele.

Song for 2013

Sharon stumbled on the video of The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?) shortly after it was released. She loved it. We showed the video after dinner at our 2013 Fall Dinner Party.

The song for 2013 is The Fox by Ylvis.

Song for 2011

Drew spent five years playing with Milo Greene. Although I had heard some of the rough cuts earlier, they launched in early 2011. Drew left the group in December of 2015. Along the way, they got an opportunity to play Letterman and I was there!

The song for 2011 is 1957 by Milo Greene.

While I worked out of Napa in 2015 and 2016, I would hear this song often while I was having breakfast in the concierge lounge!

Song for 2010

There are a number of songs that are a staple on my running playlists. This is one of them. It is poignant because it makes me think about the people that have dropped out of my life due to death, life styles and geography.

The song for 2010 is If I Could See You One More Time by Marshall Tucker.

Other than Drew and Morgan, Marshall Tucker is the only band that has shown up twice in the Soundtrack for My Life so far.

Song for 2009

For more than twenty-five years, a group of the Davis Mafia families took an annual summer trip to Lake Almanor and Lake Shasta. I have a lot of great memories from those trips. One of those is Drew and Marlana playing February.

The song for 2009 is February by Dawson & Marie.

Song for 2008

At the suggestion of Brun and Kim, I started a project more than two years ago called the Soundtrack for My Life.

Morgan is in a band called Big Tree. They released their first album late last year. The band has been playing in the New York City area and toured up the East Coast during spring break.

Big Tree and Drew are going to tour together on the West Coast this summer. They are scheduled to appear together in Monterey on June 5, San Luis Obispo on June 6 and Sacramento on June 13.

As I have said before, with no musical aptitude myself, I am in awe at Drew and Morgan's musical ability.

The song for 2008 is Whale Song by Big Tree.

Song for 1962

As a kid, I remember watching the Alvin Show. This was the first animated series to feature Alvin and the Chipmunks. It ran on CBS in prime time from 1961 to 1962 and then in syndication for years.

The song for 1962 is The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late).

More than 18 months ago, I started a project to build a soundtrack for my life. This project was suggested and funded by Brun and Kim as a birthday present. This song fills out the series of 50 songs for 50 years. I planning to add several more honorable mention songs to 1975. There are at least three more songs for 1975 that I have carried in my head since my freshman year in college.

Song for 1960

In the stack of records that I have been dragging around for more than 30 years, there are a number of Willie Nelson albums, includng Waylon and Willie and Red Headed Strangler. Willie Nelson came to Nashville in 1960 and met with limited success. It was not until he moved to Austin in 1965 that he started to enjoy commercial success as a singer.

While Willie was in Nashville working as a songwriter, he recorded a number of demos of songs that would be popular years later. These are available on an album called Crazy: Demo Sessions.

The song for 1960 is Willie Nelson's Crazy.

Song for 1961

Although not represented in this playlist, I have some strong roots in country music. If my dad played music on the radio in the truck, it was a country music station. Additionally, I was heavily involved with FFA (Future Farmers of America) in high school. I raised and showed Hampshires for four years. I listened to a lot of country music through this period and into college. A couple Patsy Cline songs stick in my head.

The song for 1961 is Patsy Cline's I Fall to Pieces.
