Ten Years Ago Today - Building the Elk Grove House Pic #6

In January of 2000, Sharon and I sold the house in Shingle Springs and started the process of building the house in Elk Grove. Over a three plus month period, I took pictures of the house as it was built.

The sixth picture shown below was taken ten years ago today.

The series of pictures that I have posted so far can be found here.

2010 LYB Major Angels Game #8

The Angels played their eighth game of the 2010 Laguna Youth Baseball Major season. For the second night in a row, they played the Braves. This was a make-up of a game that was rained out on April 12.

At the plate, Jack was 2 for 4 with a double, a strike out and two runs scored. In his first at-bat, he crushed the first pitch over the head of Jeffery playing center field for a double. He and Greysen scored on Breyton's double. Jack slapped a 2 and 1 pitch sharply through the left side for a single in his second plate appearance. He and Greysen scored on Dominic's double. In his third at-bat, Jeffery struck Jack out for the first time this rec season. With the count 2 and 2, the pitch was literally right under his nose. I was standing behind the umpire talking to Scott; it was a horrible call.

Jack's last at bat was a great battle. With two outs and the base loaded in the top of the sixth, Jack had a nine pitch at bat. He blooped the ninth pitch in shallow left center and the shortstop made a great diving catch for the out.

In the field, Jack played an inning in centerfield, one inning at third and two innings at first. He literally only handled the ball once the whole game. In the fifth inning on a dropped third strike, the catcher threw low to first base. Jack had to dig the ball out and then scramble to get to the base for the out.

The Angels won the game by the score of 10 to 4. The box score is here and the game log is here. The Angels now have 7 wins and 1 loss for the season.

2010 LYB Major Angels Game #7

On another cold and windy day, the Angels played their seventh game of the 2010 Laguna Youth Baseball Major season. It actually rained up until about 30 minutes before the game started. The Angels played the Braves. Jeffery, one of Jack's classmates, played on the other team.

This was not Jack's best game at the plate or on the base paths. I took him Tuesday night to work out with a hitting coach. This coach spent the session changing on how Jack uses his lower body. I worry about how it is going to impact his hitting in the short term, but think that it is the right investment for the long term.

At the plate, Jack was 0 for 2, reached base on an error and walked. In his first at-bat, Jack popped up a 2 and 1 pitch to the pitcher for an out. He walked on 5 pitches against Jeffery in his second at-bat. Although the first base coach told him not to, Jack took a big turn at first to draw the throw. Niko scampered home from third and Jack was caught in the run down. He hit a 0 and 2 pitch at the third baseman who could not handle the ball and Jack was safe at first. Jack stole second and then got caught leaning the wrong way on a pick off move and was thrown out at third.

In the field, Jack played two innings at third, one inning in center field and two innings at first. Jack only handled the ball three times. In the second inning, Niko caught a runner taking a causal lead off of third and threw to Jack for the out. In the fifth inning, there were two 3Dk's (dropped third strikes). On the first one, the ball went back to the pitcher who then threw to Jack for the out. On the second one, Jack could not reach a wide throw by the catcher and the runner was safe at first.

For the second time in three games, the Angels pitcher threw a combined no-hitter. Against the Dodgers, the Angels pitchers struck out 14 batters. Tonight against the Braves, the pitchers stuck out 15 batters.

Scoring in every inning, the Angels won the game by a score of 7 to 1. The box score is here and the game log is here. The Angels now have 6 wins and 1 loss for the season.

2010 Laguna Youth Baseball 11U All Star Tryout #1

Sunday afternoon, I took Jack to the Laguna Youth Baseball 11U All Star Tryout. Every year Laguna Youth Baseball is represented by an All Star Team that participates in the Cal Ripken Norcal State Tournament. This is the third year that Jack has participated in the tryouts. Starting at 1 p.m., we got there about 12:30 p.m. to sign-in. With Jack helping to drag the field afterwards, it was after 4:30 p.m. before we left.

I counted 28 boys. Like last year, I was surprised at the number of players I did not recognize. There must be a large number of boys who are playing in the Minors. Jack plays in Majors.

I dragged along the pitching machine and spent almost two hours feeding balls to the kids. We set the pitching machine to only about 52 mph, but the majority of the kids had trouble getting their bat on the ball.

Jack showed solidly, but not spectacularly. The biggest benefit was that he got to take probably 45 throws at first base during the infield workout. He needs all the work he can get digging the ball at first base.

2010 SEAs Dinner and Auction

Leaving Jack's baseball game on Saturday, we rushed home and got cleaned up. From there, we headed to the Sanborn's for a quick drink and some hors d'oeuvres. Leaving Jack with Tim, Marlene, Philip, Sharon and I headed to SEAs dinner and silent and live auctions at the St. Joseph's Parish Hall.

We had a great evening. I finally won one of the recurring live auction items that I have been pursuing for the last several years. By the time, we got home it was almost midnight.

This is one of the main fund raisers for Jack's school. It is the eleventh year that they have had the auction and the eighth year that we have attended [2004, 2005, 2006, 20072008 and 2009]. Hopefully, next year, the event will be held at the new Good Shepherd Parish Hall.

2010 LYB Major Angels Game #6

With the weather finally warming up, the Angels played their sixth game of the 2010 Laguna Youth Baseball Major season. The Angels played the Giants. Coming into the game, the Giants had a record of 5 wins and 0 losses. The two teams met earlier in the season and the Giants won by the score of 12 to 6.

At the plate, Jack was 2 for 2 with a walk and two runs scored. In his first at-bat in the top of the first, he hit the first pitch off the end of the bat through the left side for single. Jack eventually came around to score. Jack walked on four pitches in his second plate appearance. He eventually came around to score again.

His third at-bat was the most interesting this season. With one out in the top of the fifth, Jack bunted the first pitch down the third base line for a single. Scott was watching the game with us and we were speculating whether the coaches called the bunt or Jack did it on his own. Talking to him after the game, Jack said that he decided to bunt on his own. The Giants third baseman was a big 12 year old who is not very mobile. Jack said that he felt that if he got down a good bunt they would never get him out. He ended the inning still on second base.

In the field, Jack played third base, shortstop, first base, centerfield and then third base again. In the first inning at third base, he had a routine grounder and threw the runner out at first. In the third inning while playing shortstop, Jack made a nice backhand stop in the hole and threw the runner out at first. In the fourth inning at first base, Jack took throws from the third baseman and pitcher to get two put outs. Unfortunately, after a walk, Jack failed to hold on to a throw from third for an error. Niko followed with an error on a ground ball to short that allowed the Giants to score their first run of the game. Jack played the fifth inning in center field and fielded one single up the middle.

Walking only one runner this game compared to 10 runners in the first meeting, the Angels won the game by a score of 7 to 4. The box score is here and the game log is here. The Angels now have 5 wins and 1 loss for the season.

2010 Softball Classic plus Employee Barbecue

Judy's Application Services Team sponsored a Co-ed Softball Tournament at the Mather Sports Center. Originally, IS leadership was planning to field a team, but with the number of teams entered, it was decided that leadership would umpire the games. I ended up umpiring three games over the course of six hours, including the championship game. Rudy's DC Cats lost to Baker's Dirty Dozen in the championship game.

I was pleasantly surprised to find Kevin manning the barbecue at lunch!

ESPN 30 for 30 - No Crossover: The Trial of Allen Iverson

On Sunday, I watched No Crossover: The Trial of Allen Iverson. This is the tenth installment of ESPN's 30 for 30 series.

On Valentine's Day 1993, Allen Iverson was involved in a fight in a bowling alley between a group of whites and a group of blacks. Iverson and several of his friends were eventually arrested, tried, convicted of three counts of felony mobbing and sentenced to five years in prison. He was a junior in high school. None of the whites involved were arrested or charged.

Written and Directed by Steve James who produced the documentary Hoop Dreams, the film looks at Iverson's high school career, the trial and the aftermath of the conviction. James is from the Hampton, Virginia where Iverson grew up.

Watching the film, I had a number of random unrelated observations. The footage of Iverson playing basketball and football as a junior in high school is amazing. Given his size, his athletic skills are astounding. His basketball and football teams won state championships when he was a junior. It is clear that Iverson had a challenging childhood. Combining this background with the treatment he received by the legal system in the bowling alley case makes it easy to see some of the source of his anger as an adult.

At almost an hour and a half, the film dragged a little for me in the middle. I understand what James was trying to do; he was exploring all sides of the trial and the conspiracy theories associated with the charges and the sentencing. I just think that it ran a little long in the third half hour.

Taking place at time when I did not have cable, ESPN and SportsCenter, I do not remember hearing about this when it happened. It is an interesting, well told story.

The film is available on Amazon.

No Crossover: The Trial of Allen Iversion is also available on iTunes.

2010 LYB Major Angels Game #5

On another cold and windy evening, the Angels played their fifth game of the 2010 Laguna Youth Baseball Major season. They played the Dodgers. There were two kids on the other team that Jack has played with before: Jake on the AAA Padres and Denis on the fall ball Yankees.

At the plate, Jack was 1 for 3 with a double, reached base on errors twice and scored two runs. In his first at-bat, he hit a 2 and 2 pitch right at the second baseman to drive in Greysen. The second baseman misplayed the ball and Jack was safe at first. Jack eventually scored on a grounder that Ben hit to the shortstop. In his second plate appearance, Jack drove the first pitch down the third base line for a double to drive in Zack and Greysen. He eventually scored on Niko's grounder to shortstop. Jack hit an 0 and 2 pitch at the third baseman in his third at-bat. The first baseman did not handle the throw and Jack was safe at first. With the ball bouncing around the infield, Jack made an attempt to go all the way to third; he was out at third.

In the field, Jack played three innings at shortstop, two innings at first base and pitched the sixth inning. He had no balls hit to him at shortstop. In the second inning, Dominic made a strong throw to Jack covering second to get Jake out trying to steal. From behind home plate, it looked like Jake was safe, but Jack said later that he was blocking the plate. At first base, Jack had one ball hit to his right that he fielded, waved off everyone else and ran to the base himself.

Jack pitched the sixth inning. He threw 13 pitches with 8 strikes. Jack struck out two batters wrapped around a ground out to Niko at shortstop.

Scoring all of their runs off of walks, the Dodgers failed to get a hit. Fourteen of the eighteen outs were strike-outs. The other four outs included a pop-up to Niko at pitcher, the grounder to Niko at shortstop, the grounder to Jack at first base and the throw to Jack covering second to get the runner stealing.

The Angels jumped out to a 6 run lead in the top of the first and never looked back. The Angels won the game by the game of 12 to 4. The box score is here and the game log is here. The Angels now have 4 wins and 1 loss for the season.

Benchwarmers

Looking for a movie that we could watch after dinner, I asked Jack to look in iTunes for a movie that we could download to the AppleTV.

Jack chose Benchwarmers. With a baseball storyline, the movie stars Rob Schneider, David Spade, Jon Lovitz and Tim Meadows. Reggie Jackson also appears in the film. Oddly, although it was released in 2006, Benchwarners was sixth on the iTunes movie charts.

Sharon had two interesting comments. First, she noted that it would be the perfect film to show at a sleepover of 11 year old boys. Second, she said that it was better than some of the James Bond films that we have seen!?!

While I agree with her first observation, I don't agree with her second comment... Sharon and Jack enjoyed the movie more than I did.

2010 LYB Major Angels Game #4

The Angels played their fourth game of the 2010 Laguna Youth Baseball Major season. They played the Giants. Both teams came into the game with a record of 3 wins and 0 losses. There were three kids on the other team that Jack has played with before: Kyle on the AAA Padres; Louie on the AAA Padres and the 10U All-Star Team and Tanner on the Minor Twins.

At the plate, Jack was 2 for 2 with a double, a walk and a run scored. In his first at-bat, he smoked a 0 and 1 pitch into center. The ball bounced to the fence and Jack rolled into second. Jack and Niko scored on Ben's double. He walked on five pitches in second plate appearance, but was thrown out trying to steal second. Jack drove a 1 and 0 pitch through the left side for a single in his last at-bat to lead off the bottom of the sixth. He ended the inning on first base.

Jack played an inning at third, two innings at shortstop and two innings at first base. At first base, he had five put-outs: two on throws from the catcher; one on a high pop-up in front of first base; one on a high bouncer ranging to his right; and one on a low grounder to his left that he knocked down.

I cringe a little when I see Jack playing shortstop. While he played there a lot in AA and AAA, he has just not played there much in the last two years. Jack had only one ball hit at him in two innings at shortstop: a spinning grounder hit to his left. Although Jack and Coach Rod said that the ball took a funny bounce, I charged Jack with his first error of the year.

With the Angels leading 5 to 4 after two innings, the Giants blew the game open with four runs in the third and three runs in the fourth. All of the runs that the Angels gave up in the third were unearned. The box score is here and the game log is here. The Angels now have 3 wins and 1 loss for the season.

Due to all of the rain that we have had this spring, the Angels came into this game with eight days without a game or practice. The pitchers seemed rusty...

ESPN 30 for 30 - Guru of Go

On Sunday, I finished watching the Guru of Go. This is the ninth installment of ESPN's 30 for 30 series. The film tells the story of Paul Westhead. The story of Paul Westhead becomes the story of Loyola Marymount, Bo Kimble and Hank Gathers.

As a head coach, Westhead won an NBA Championship with the Lakers in 1980 and a WNBA Championship with the Phoenix Mercury in 2005. Between 1970 and the present, he has coached almost 20 different teams at a variety of levels. Everywhere he has coached, Westhead has worked to implement an unorthodox, uptempo, run-and-gun style.

Westhead was a Shakespeare scholar and the film uses Shakespeare quotes as a vehicle to move between scenes.  Over the years, he kept journals; fragments from the journals are used to tell the story.

Westhead coached at Loyola Marymount from 1985 to 1990. Kimble and Gathers became the centerpiece of arguably the most entertaining college team in history. The team holds the record for the five highest scoring games in NCAA Division 1 history.

Hank Gathers died on the court during the conference tournament in 1990. The scenes of Hank Gathers' collapse on the court and the current interviews with people trying to talk about the incident twenty years later are both difficult to watch and extremely powerful.

After Gathers' death, Loyola Marymount went on to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament before losing to the eventual champion UNLV. The footage from these tournament games is riveting.

While maybe not the best of the 30 for 30 series (I really enjoyed The "U" and Winning Time), it is definitely worth watching.

The film is available on Amazon.

The Guru of Go is also available on iTunes.

2010 Kings versus Rockets

Larkin and I went to the Sacramento Kings versus Houston Rockets NBA basketball game. This was the last Kings home game of the season; when we are drawing tickets, I always make an effort to get the first and last games of the year. Leading 79 to 70 with 5:31 to go in the third quarter, the Kings were outscored 47 to 28 in the remainder of the game and lost by a score of 117 to 107.

In his first game back in Sacramento after being traded to the Rockets, Kevin Martin led all scorers with 39 points on 11 for 20 from the field, 1 for 6 from three and 16 for 16 from the free throw line.

The difference in the game was really Trevor Ariza. He hit 3 straight three pointers in a span of about 1 1/2 minutes at the end of the third quarter to give the Rockets their first lead of the game. Ariza added two more threes in the fourth quarter. He finished the game with 29 points on 10 for 18 from the field, 5 for 9 from three and 4 for 4 from the free throw line.

Tyreke Evans scored 22 points in the first half. Needing just two more points to ensure that he would finish the year averaging 20 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists, he then missed his next nine shots. Part of the problem was that he was pressing too hard. Each time he touched the ball, music played, the fans stood and cheered and everybody knew he was going to try to shoot. The Rockets also made a defensive change at half-time and had Ariza cover Evans in the second half. Evans eventually got the two points he needed on free throws. He finished with 24 points on 8 for 23 from the field, 0 for 1 from three and 8 for 10 from the free throw line.

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger sat together courtside in the Maloof's seats in front of us.

The Kings finished the season with 4 wins and 7 losses in games that I saw in person.

Bowling

After going out to an early dinner on Saturday night, Sharon, Jack and I went bowling at Strikes in Elk Grove.  This is only the second time that we have gone there since it opened.

When I bowled with the IS leadership team as a team building event in December, I bowled a 316 three game total. I improved slightly this time, bowling 95, 120 and 135 for a three game total of 350.

2010 Laguna Youth Baseball Picture Day and Hit-a-thon

Jack and I spent the morning at Morse Park getting the individual and team pictures taken.

Afterwards, the boys competed in a hit-a-thon. Each player got a number of batting practice pitches to try and hit the ball as far as he could. The idea was that each player would get pledges and earn money for the league depending on how far he hit the balls.

2010 LYB Major Angels Game #2 replayed

Jack and I hustled back from skiing at Sugar Bowl to get to his rec baseball game. Last week's Angels game against the Diamondbacks was suspended due to lightning after three innings. The teams replayed the game from the start tonight.

At the plate, Jack was 2 for 3 with a walk, a double, a run scored and 3 RBIs. In his first at-bat, Jack drove a 0 and 1 pitch into deep left center for a double and an RBI. Greysen scored from second. Trying to steal third on a ball that rolled away from the catcher, Jack was thrown out at third. After spending most of the day skiing hard at Sugar Bowl, I wonder if his legs were tired and he had lost a step. Jack walked on four pitches in his second plate appearance. He ended the inning at third base. With the bases loaded and two out in the fifth inning, Jack blooped a 3 and 2 pitch behind first base into short right field to drive in two runs. He ended up scoring on Ben's double to center field. In his fourth at-bat, Jack drove a 1 and 0 pitch into deep right center field. The center fielder made a nice running catch for the out.

In the field, Jack played three innings at first, pitched the fourth inning, sat out the fifth and played right field in the sixth. At first base, Jack had four put-outs: two on throws from the pitcher, one on a throw from the second baseman and one that he fielded himself.

Jack threw 27 pitches in the fourth inning, 17 for strikes. He struck out one and had a put-out on a ball hit up the first base line that Breyton fielded and tossed back to Jack covering the base. Jack gave up two unearned runs on errors by the right fielder and the shortstop.

Jack played an uneventful sixth inning in right field.

With the Angels leading 3 to 2 after four innings, they scored 6 runs in the fifth and 5 runs in the sixth to win the game by a score of 14 to 2. The box score is here and the game log is here. The Angels now have 3 wins and 0 losses for the season.

Skiing at Sugar Bowl

Jack and I had a great day of snow skiing at Sugar Bowl.  Up early, we got there by 8:30 a.m. and were on the slopes by about 8:50 a.m.  I enjoyed the morning, but did not like the snow after lunch.  The snow got very heavy and wet in the afternoon.

Jack got stronger and stronger as the day wore on.  He was fearless.  Frankly, Jack is a much better athlete than I ever was...

We took off early and headed back to Elk Grove for his rec baseball game.

Tomorrow Never Dies

Continuing our quest to watch all of the James Bond Films in order, we watched Tomorrow Never Dies on Saturday night. Released in 1997, it is the eighteenth spy film in the James Bond series and the second to star Pierce Brosnan as the fictional MI6 agent James Bond.

In the film, Bond tries to stop a media mogul from engineering world events and starting World War III. The media mogul uses a stealth ship and a GPS encoder to try and start a shooting war between the British fleet and the Chinese.

In addition to Pierce Brosnan as James Bond and and Dame Judi Dench as M, the film stars Jonathan Pryce as Elliot Carver (a media mogul modelled on Robert Maxwell), Michelle Yeoh as Colonel Wai Lin (a Chinese spy) and Teri Hatcher as Paris Carver (a former girlfriend of Bond who is now Carver's trophy wife).

This is a flim that I saw in the theater; I have some strong memories of the scenes with the BMW in the parking garage. In fact, I am pretty sure that Sharon and I saw it together in the theater.

Game Winning RBI! [2010 LYB Major Angels Game #3]

Jack played in his second game of the 2010 Laguna Youth Baseball Major League Season. His Angels played the White Sox.

At the plate, Jack was 1 for 2 with a walk and the game winning RBI. The Angels have him batting third behind Niko and Breyton. In his first at-bat, Jack walked on six pitches. Trying to steal second, he got doubled off first on a pop fly to end the inning. Fouling off four pitches, Jack drove a 3 and 2 pitch up the middle to lead off the fourth. He thought about trying to stretch it into a double. He went to second on an error by the first baseman. Jack got to third on an infield out. The next batter walked. Unfortunately, with the bases loaded and one out, the Angels were unable to get Jack home and he ended the inning at third.

With the game tied 3 to 3 in the bottom of the sixth, Niko started the inning with a single through the left side. Breyton drove his first pitch in left center. Niko went to third and Breyton went to second on the throw to third. Jack came up for his third at-bat. The White Sox brought in a new pitcher (#30): their biggest kid who throws left handed. The White Sox coach gathered up the infielders and emphasized that they needed to make the throw to home. With the infield playing in, Jack hit a 2 and 1 pitch hard on the ground right at the second baseman. The ball took a big hop and the second baseman never found the handle. Even if he had, Niko had a big jump at third and it would have taken a spectacular play to get him out at home. Niko scored and Jack was safe at first to end the game. Much to Jack's chagrin, I scored it a fielder's choice.

In the field, Jack played two innings at first, two innings at third, sat out the fifth and played the sixth inning at shortstop. He had two put-outs and an assist. At first base, Jack had a put-out on a throw from the pitcher in the first inning. In the second inning, he made a great play. The shortstop bobbled a hard hit grounder. With a runner coming off second, the shortstop thought about trying to tag him, but ended up throwing late to Jack at first. The runner at second broke for third. Jack took the throw and immediately threw a strike to Ben at third to get the runner and end the inning. In the third inning while Jack was playing third, the catcher overthrew second trying to catch a runner stealing. The ball went into centerfield and the runner headed for third. Dominic fielded the ball and threw a strike to Jack at third to get the runner and end the inning.

The Angels won the game by a score of 4 to 3. The game log is here and the box score is here. The game that the Angels played last Wednesday against the Diamondbacks which was suspended due to lightning after three innings does not count and will apparently be replayed from the beginning. The Angels now have 2 wins and 0 losses for the season.

Fordlandia: The Rise and Fall of Henry Ford's Forgotten Jungle City

I finished reading Fordlandia: The The Rise and Fall of Henry Ford's Forgotten Jungle City on the plane on the way back from Spring Training. I heard the author interviewed on the NPR books podcast last June and ordered the book. The book was included on the New York Times list of the 100 Notable Books of 2009.

From 1928 to 1945, Henry Ford tried to transform part of Brazil's Amazon River basin into a rubber plantation and American-style company town. He had purchased 2.5 million acres of Amazon land, roughly the size of Connecticut.

Unexpectedly for me, the book spends a lot of time examining Henry Ford and the Ford Motor Company. This information provides a context for why Henry Ford undertook the project to begin with and what he was trying to accomplish socially both in the Amazon and other parts of his empire.

I enjoyed the parts of the book set in the Amazon a great deal, but struggled with some other sections of the book. In particular, some of the sections outlining Ford's moral and political philosophies seemed to drag a bit. I was also surprised by the last section of the book; the author spends the final chapter talking about the current economic and agricultural development of the Amazon. I grade the book as a B+; it is good, but not great.

Easter 2010

For the second year in a row, we got up very early and went to a 6 a.m. sunrise Mass at Good Shepherd Church. Given the architecture of the new church, I enjoy how the light changes during the early morning and late afternoon Masses.

Sharon had made an attempt to organize a family get together for Easter, but was unable to herd her brothers' families in the same direction. As a result, we made a decision to have an early dinner at Piatti Ristorante.

Ten Years Ago Today - Building the Elk Grove House Pic #2

In January of 2000, Sharon and I sold the house in Shingle Springs and started the process of building the house in Elk Grove. Over a three plus month period, I took pictures of the house as it was built.

The second picture shown below was taken ten years ago today.

The series of pictures that I have posted so far can be found here.
