Sharon's brother Tom came over about 6:45 pm. Tom has joined us for dinner and a movie on New Year's Eve in 2018 (Roma), 2019 (The Irishman) and 2022 (Tár).
Sharon served an interesting cocktail before dinner.
Although we had some drama getting the duck delivered, everything came together. Sharon made a great dinner of spiced orange duck, rice and squash bombe and a leafy winter salad.
After the late dinner, we ended up watching The Substance. I will post my thoughts on the movie later this week.
The movie was over about 11:40 pm. After I walked Tiber in the neighborhood, we crashed about 12:15 am...

2024 Kings versus Mavericks
Larkin and I went to the Sacramento Kings versus Dallas Mavericks NBA basketball game. When Larkin asked me if I was up for going to the game, I said "yes, I wanted to see the trainwreck up close and personal." The Kings fired Mike Brown as head coach on Saturday. The team had lost six games in a row.
The Mavs were short-handed. In addition to Luka Doncic being out for at least the next month with a calf strain, they were missing Kyrie Irving (shoulder), Klay Thompson (illness), Dereck Lively II (hip) and Naji Marshall (suspension).
With the Mavs going 7 for 8 from three in the first quarter, the Kings fell behind by 18 points. The Kings held the Mavs to 40 second half points and won the game by the score of 110 to 100.
The Kings continue to be a very poor three point shooting team. They were 10 for 32 (31.2%). If you take away Trey Lyles' shooting, the Kings were 7 for 26 from three (26.9%).
Spencer Dinwiddie was the high scorer for the Mavericks. He had 30 points on 8 for 18 from the field, 3 for 6 from three and 11 for 12 from the free throw line. P.J. Washington added 28 points.
De'Aaron Fox was the high scorer for the Kings. He had 33 points on 13 for 23 from the field, 3 for 7 from three and 4 for 5 from the free throw line. Domantas Sabonis added 17 points, 16 rebounds and 7 assists.
The Kings are currently 12th in the Western Conference. They are 2.5 games out of the 10th spot for the play-in game. I don't understand the Mike Brown firing. From my perspective, the problem is the roster composition. The team is too small, particularly on the wings, and they are a terrible three point shooting team. I think that it is going to be very difficult for the Kings to turn the season around...
The Kings have 1 win and 2 losses in games that I have seen in the 2024-2025 season.

Taking Jack back to the City
Sharon and I spent the lion's share of the day taking Jack back to San Francisco. Leaving a little after 9 am, we were in the city about 11:20 am. We changed drivers in Vallejo. I was surprised that the Hunter Hill Rest Area was closed; we usually change drivers there.
Wanting to beat the traffic out of the city, we had lunch at LITA in Walnut Creek. We split a BABY KALE︀ salad [delicata squash, pepitas, pomegranate avocado, citrus vinaigrette]. For entrees, we both had CARIBBEAN BOWLS [rice︀ & peas, charred pineapple︀ guacamole, caribbean︀ slaw, scotch-bonnet tomatoes, plantain]. Sharon had OXTAIL, while I had CURRY GOAT.
For a change of scenery, we ended home through the delta. We took 680 to 242 to 4 to 160 to 12 to 5 to 50. With one stop for a change in drivers in Elk Grove, it took about an hour and fifty minutes. We were home at 3:50 pm...

At Emerald Lakes Golf Course
Sharon and Jack played golf with Jason and his dad Tom at the Emerald Lakes Golf Course. Ironically, given Jason and Jack's long friendship, Sharon and I had never met Jason's parents. On the nine hole par 33 course, Jack said that he shot a 46 and Sharon had a 53.

A Complete Unknown
Christmas Night, Jack, Drew, Carmen, Sharon and I saw A Complete Unknown at Cinemark Century Greenback Lane 16 and XD. Over the last sixteen years, we have had a tradition of seeing a movie on Christmas Day. Additionally, the movie fits into our annual journey to see all of the films that might be nominated for an Oscar. GoldDerby currently has A Complete Unknown with the eleventh highest Best Picture Odds.
A Complete Unknown is a biographical musical drama film directed by James Mangold, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jay Cocks. It is based on the 2015 book Dylan Goes Electric! by Elijah Wald. The film's title is derived from the chorus of Dylan's 1965 single "Like a Rolling Stone".
Timothée Chalamet (who also produces) stars as Dylan. The supporting cast includes Edward Norton, Elle Fanning, Monica Barbaro, Boyd Holbrook, Dan Fogler, Norbert Leo Butz, and Scoot McNairy.
The biopic follows Bob Dylan's journey from an aspiring folk singer to a rock and roll icon. The film chronicles his rise to fame in the 1960s New York City music scene. It explores his relationships with key figures like Pete Seeger (Norton) and Joan Baez (Barbaro). The movie culminates with Dylan's controversial electric performance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival.
I liked the movie more than Sharon did. While Chalamet is one of Sharon's favorite actors, Bob Dylan is one of her least favorite musicians. Sharon noted that there is a lot of singing in the movie. Chalamet sings 40 Dylan songs in the film, while also playing guitars and harmonicas. All performances were recorded live while filming. I think that the movie will be nominated for Best Picture and Chalamet will be nominated for Best Actor.
I was surprised to realize that I don't have a Bob Dylan song in the Soundtrack for my Life. One of my roommates during my freshman year in college played a lot of Dylan. The song Hurricane came out in November of 1975; the roommate played it frequently. I might add a Bob Dylan song this year...

Christmas Day 2024
A Christmas Day in seven parts.
Part 1
It was great to have Jack, Drew and Carmen stay overnight. Everyone was up and moving early. After I took Tiber on a Creek walk, the five of us opened the stockings.
Part 2
Lee, Clem, Daniel and Morgan rolled up about 9:30 am. We had a leisurely breakfast. I made waffles. Sharon made an interesting breakfast souffle and a salad with two types of oranges topped with roasted rosemary and olives.
Part 3
After breakfast, we spent a long time around the tree opening gifts. Lee had a great time running back and forth taking gifts to everyone. I got Sharon a necklace with a map of our house, a Alex and Ani bracelet and an Apple watchband. We got Morgan and Carmen necklaces with maps of their houses.
Part 4
After opening all the presents, we took Tiber and Stella for a walk in Ancil Hoffman Park.
Part 5
Jack, Morgan, Drew, Carmen, Sharon and I played a long game of Unstable Unicorns. Jack won.
Part 6
Jack, Drew, Sharon, Carmen and I went to late afternoon movie. We saw A Complete Unknown at the Cinemark Century Greenback Lane 16 and XD. This is a pre-pandemic tradition. A list of movies that we have seen on Christmas Day is here.
A Complete Unknown chronicles Bob Dylan's meteoric rise in the early 1960s, from his arrival in New York City to his controversial electric performance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. It is on my list as a possible nominee for multiple Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor. I will post my thoughts about the movie later this week.
Part 7
We finished the day with a very late dinner at home. Sharon's brother Tom joined Jack, Drew, Carmen, Sharon and me for dinner. I barbecued filet migons. Sharon added potatoes, spinach and bread.
It was a very nice day! Although I was moving a little slow, I really enjoyed having the kids and grandkids around!

Christmas Eve 2024
Monday night, Drew went over to Jack's in San Francisco and picked up his presents and golf clubs. Getting off work on Tuesday, Jack jumped on BART to Orinda. Drew and Carmen picked up him up at the Bart Station about 2:15 pm and started for Elk Grove.
Sharon and I headed to her brother Tim's house after 3:00 pm. Tim and Kathy last hosted Christmas Eve in 2019. We got there about 3:45 pm. Drew, Carmen and Jack rolled up about 4:20 pm.
The group for Christmas Eve totalled 23, including: Tom; Eric and Ashley; Kevin, Leah, Lydia and Amelia; Terry and Steve; Jim; Tim and Kathy; Eileen, Will and a friend of Eileen from Portland; Cormac, Erin and Mave; and, Sharon, Jack, Drew, Carmen and me.
After a buffet dinner, we exchanged gifts. Starting to run out of gas, I had fun watching the cousins gift exchange.
I enjoyed the evening. For a number of reasons, we haven't done a Christmas Eve like this since 2019.

Oura Ring Six Month Anniversary Data
For Christmas in 2022, Sharon gave me an OURA ring. It is a smart ring used to track sleep and physical activity.
Over the last two years, my superpowers have always been training volume and the timing of my sleep cycle [June 2023, December 2023, June 2024]. Over the last two years, my kryptonite has switched from recovery index to restfulness and back to recovery index.

Saturday Night
Sharon and I watched Saturday Night as a rental on the AppleTV. This is loosely part of our annual journey to see all of the films that MIGHT be nominated for any Oscar. The movie received one Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for Gabriel LaBelle's performance as the show's creator and producer, Lorne Michaels.
Saturday Night is a biographical comedy-drama film directed by Jason Reitman. It is about the night of the 1975 premiere of NBC's Saturday Night, later known as Saturday Night Live.
The film stars a large ensemble cast portraying the various Saturday Night cast and crew. In addition to Gabriel LaBelle as Lorne Michaels, I particularly enjoyed Cory Michael Smith as Chevy Chase, Dylan O'Brien as Dan Aykroyd and Matt Wood as John Belushi.
Frankly, I wanted to watch the movie because I have always been a Saturday Night Live fan. One of my cherished memories is watching a SNL skit with Nooter. It was Steve Martin and Bill Murray pointing and asking “What the hell is that…?”. This skit ran in October of 1979, more than forty-five years ago.
I read a 750 page oral history of the first five years of the show in 2020. While I was reading the book, I watched the first episode. Running on the treadmill, I watched the entire first session during the pandemic. I am currently slowly working my way through the second season.
Saturday Night won't win any awards. It will not be nominated for any Oscars. Nevertheless, as a fan of the show, I enjoyed the movie.

Deterding Ranch Neighborhood Christmas Party
Over the last twelve years, there has a been some version of a Deterding Ranch Neighborhood Christmas Party [2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023]. This morphed into a progressive dinner in 2015. When it became clear that the progressive dinner wasn't going to happen in 2022, Sharon and I decided to host a cocktail party. It has been a progressive dinner party again for the last two years.
Sharon attended. Unfortunately, recovering, I missed the evening. Greg and Michelle hosted cocktails. Dinner was served at Jan and John's house. Brad and Heidi provided dessert.
The group totalled 21, including: Tom and Judy; Glen; Mike and Jill; John and Jan; Brad and Heidi; Sharon; Steve and Kristin; Greg and Michelle; Jim and Debbie; Audrey, Victor and Enzo; and Karl and Kathleen.

Survivor 47
Wednesday night, Sharon and I watched the final episode of season 47 of Survivor.
Season 47 of Survivor was filmed in Fiji from May 13 to June 7, 2024. The season premiered on CBS on September 18, 2024 and ran until December 18, 2024. It is the fifteenth consecutive season to be filmed in the Mamanuca Islands in Fiji; this has been the show's location since Season 33. The season is part of the "new era" of Survivor, which means it will run for 26 days instead of the 39 days of the first 40 seasons.
Rachel LaMont was crowned the winner, defeating Sam Phalen and Sue Smey in a 7-1-0 vote. I frankly thought that Sam was more articulate than Rachel during the final tribal council. Although I was rooting for Rachel, I was surprised that Sam only got one vote.
As I have said repeatedly, I would really love to see the show filmed in other locations. Unfortunately, on December 15, 2023, the Fijian Minister of Commerce, Trade, Tourism and Transport, announced that the Fijian Parliament had renewed its contract with Survivor for an additional two years. Additionally, I think that the use of the sanctuary has gotten very repetitive. It seems lazy just to use the sanctuary over and over for the reward challenges.

Spoiler Alert - Yellowstone - Season Five
Sunday night, Sharon and I finished watching season five of Yellowstone. We finished season one in September of 2021, season two in March of 2022, season three in May of 2022 and season four in June of 2022.
The first part of the fifth and final season premiered on November 13, 2022. We watched it almost two years ago. The second part premiered on November 10, 2024 with the series finale airing on December 15, 2024.
The series follows the conflicts along the shared borders of a large cattle ranch, a Native reservation, and land developers. Over the first four and a half seasons, Kevin Costner as John Dutton starred as a sixth-generation patriarch who operates the Yellowstone/Dutton Ranch. Apparently due to creative differences with the show's creator, behind-the-scenes tension and pay disputes, Costner left the show before the filming of part two.
I have never been very complimentary of Yellowstone. It just seemed too outlandish. In particular, the body count was very high and the plots regularly jumped the shark. I enjoyed this half season more than previous seasons. The murder of Dutton (Costner) at the beginning of part two moved the show in a slightly different direction. My biggest criticism is that part two of season five seems to contain a lot of lengthy gratuitous scenes that really don't move the plot along.
I have to wonder where the series would have gone if Costner hadn't dropped out. What was Taylor Sheridan's original vision for the end of seasons five? Did he always plan to have the ranch sold to the Indian Tribe?
I suspect that we will end up watching the two prequels to Yellowstone: 1883 and 1923. There are rumors of several other related Yellowstone series, including a sequel. We have already started watching Taylor Sheridan's Landman with Billy Bob Thornton.

Dinner with Gainsleys and Larkins
Sharon and I invited the Larkins and the Gainsleys over for a cocktail. Afterwards, the six of us went to Plan B for dinner. For starters, Sharon had butter salad [walnuts, Roquefort, sun-dried cherries, whole grain Dijonette], while I had a spinach salad [red onion, bacon, almonds, balsamic]. For entrees, Sharon had lamb chops, while I had branzino.

Bouchaine Vineyards
Thursday morning, we took off for Napa. We had a leisurely wine tasting at Bouchaine. On a rainy weekday, we were the only people in the tasting room for most of the time. Sharon had a couple of wine club shipments to pick up. We have been wine club members at Bouchine since 2010.
Afterwards, we had late lunch at Hog Island Oyster Co in the Oxbow Public Market. I had the Rustic Seafood Stew [Rockfish, Manila clams, gulf shrimp, squid, mussels, herb-tomato broth, ACME levain toast], while Sharon had Oyster Pot Pie [Carrots, leeks, sunchokes, cream sauce, panko bread crumbs].
It was a two hour and forty-five minute slog driving back from Napa. I always wonder: where are all of these people going on a Thursday afternoon?

Fly Me to the Moon
Saturday night, Sharon and I watched Fly Me to the Moon on Apple TV+. Sharon latched on to the idea of watching the movie because the trailer is being featured at the top of the Apple TV+ home screen.
Fly Me to the Moon is a romantic comedy drama film directed by Greg Berlanti and written by Rose Gilroy. It is based on a story by Keenan Flynn and Bill Kirstein.
The film stars Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum. Woody Harrelson and Ray Romano appear in supporting roles. There is a cameo of Colin Jost as a senator.
Set against the backdrop of the 1969 Apollo 11 mission, the movie follows a marketing executive, Kelly Jones (Johansson), and a NASA launch director, Cole Davis (Tatum). As the U.S. races to land on the moon, Kelly and Cole navigate a fake moon landing plot while falling for each other.
Not a great movie, but a nice mindless break from working our way through the potential Oscar Best Picture candidates...

Wicked Part One
Tuesday afternoon, Sharon and I watched Wicked Part One at the Century Club Cinema. We are continuing our annual journey to see all of the films that might be nominated for an Oscar. GoldDerby currently has Wicked Part One with the fifth highest Best Picture Odds.
The film was named one of the top ten films of 2024 by the American Film Institute. It earned four nominations at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
Wicked is a musical fantasy film directed by Jon M. Chu. It was written by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox with songs by Stephen Schwartz. It is the first installment of a two-part film adaptation of the stage musical of the same name based on the 1995 novel. The novel is based on the Oz books and the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. Wicked Part Two is scheduled for release on November 21, 2025.
It stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba Thropp and Ariana Grande as Galinda Upland. The supporting cast includes Jonathan Bailey [Bridgerton], Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, Michelle Yeoh [Everything Everywhere All At Once] and Jeff Goldblum.
Wicked Part One reimagines the iconic story of The Wizard of Oz. It focuses on the origins of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West. The film follows Elphaba's journey from a misunderstood outcast to a powerful figure, exploring her complex relationship with Glinda, the Good Witch. As they navigate the challenges of a divided world, their friendship is tested and their destinies intertwined.
This movie has gotten more and more positive buzz over the last month. While Sharon enjoyed the movie more than I did, I would bet that it gets a Best Picture nomination. I expect that Erivo will get a Best Actress nomination, while Grande gets a Supporting Actress nomination. Wicked Part One is definitely worth seeing. Sharon was crestfallen that Part Two does come up until next November. I was surprised how many were in the theater for a Tuesday afternoon showing.
Jack, Sharon and I saw the play Wicked in San Francisco in 2009.

2024 Jesuit High School Lessons & Carols
The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols is a service of Christian worship celebrating the birth of Jesus that is traditionally followed at Christmas. The story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus is told in nine short Bible readings from Genesis, the prophetic books and the Gospels, interspersed with the singing of Christmas carols, hymns and choir music.
Sharon and I went to Lessons & Carols, an evening of prayer and song presented by the Jesuit High School Chamber Singers, the Concert Choir of St. Francis High School and Jesuit Drama at the Chapel of the North American Martyrs. This is the fifteenth year that Jesuit High School has held the service. After missing three years, we attended last year. Prior to that, we attended in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. Sharon's brother Tom went with us in 2018 and 2019. Sharon went by herself in 2015 while I was working in the Napa Valley.

Day One Dictator: More Doonesbury in the Time of Trumpism
My book for December is Day One Dictator: More Doonesbury in the Time of Trumpism by Gary Trudeau. As I have said before, when I was working for the Farm Credit Banks in Sacramento in the 1980s, I used to stop every morning and buy a San Francisco Chronicle. The Chronicle had Doonesbury, while the Sacramento Bee refused to publish it. One of my highlights every morning was reading the comic strip.
Trudeau started using Donald Trump as a character in his comic strip on September 14, 1987. Day One Dictator is a follow up to Yuge!: 30 Years of Doonesbury on Trump that was published before the 2016 presidential election, #SAD!: Doonesbury in the Time of Trump that was released in 2018, Lewser! - More Doonesbury in the Time of Trump that was published in 2020 and Former Guy: Doonesbury in the Time of Trumpism that was published in 2022.
Gary Trudeau's Day One Dictator is a satirical collection of Doonesbury comics. Through witty commentary and absurd scenarios, Trudeau critiques the erosion of democratic norms and the potential dangers of authoritarianism. The book blends political satire with the familiar characters of Doonesbury, offering a humorous yet thought-provoking take on contemporary issues.
Former Guy tracks Trump from June 26, 2020 to July 21, 2024. It is organized into four sections: Critical Master Race Theory; The Sightseers of January 6; The Age of X, and; Sedition Hunting.
While I enjoyed it, this book is not as good as Yuge! Day One Dictator, Former Guy, Lewser! and #SAD all feel thin compared to the first book.

Blitz
Friday night, Sharon and I watched Blitz on AppleTV. We are continuing our annual journey to see all of the films that might be nominated for an Oscar. The movie was an early favorite for a best picture nomination. Over the last couple of months, it has fallen out of favor. GoldDerby currently has Blitz with the fourteenth highest Best Picture Odds. Nevertheless, the movie has started to show up on some best picture lists again in the last month.
Blitz is a historical war drama film written, produced and directed by Steve McQueen. McQueen directed Twelve Years a Slave. It won the Best Picture Oscar in 2014 and he was nominated for Best Director.
The film stars Saoirse Ronan and Elliot Heffernan (in his film debut). They are supported by Harris Dickinson, Benjamin Clementine, Kathy Burke, Paul Weller, and Stephen Graham.
During World War II, a young boy named George (Heffernan) is evacuated from London during the Blitz. Defying orders, he embarks on a perilous journey back to his mother, Rita (Ronan). As Rita desperately searches for her lost son, George encounters a series of eccentric characters and faces the harsh realities of wartime London.
This is solid, enjoyable movie. It is not going to win Best Picture. I don't believe that it is going to get nominated for Best Picture. Additionally, I don't believe that Ronan will get a acting nomination.
Several years ago, I read The Splendid and the Vile: A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz. Based on that book, I think that the movie does an excellent job depicting the impact of the Blitz.

mailing the Christmas Cards
Twenty-six of the last twenty-seven years, Sharon and I have sent out a Christmas Card. Dissatisfied with the quality of the photos on commercial cards like Shutterfly, I built my own format and process. Unfortunately, this was a lot of work... Additionally, the number of cards that we send out has exploded in the last twenty years with the inclusion of people from SEAS, Outlaws, Jesuit High, Sutter Health, Adventist Health and Deterding Ranch.
Five years ago, I decided to go back to a commercially printed greeting card. After moving my database from Outlook into iOS contacts, I printed mailing lablels for the first time two years ago. Everything has gone a lot quicker!
I mailed 143 Christmas Cards today. I mailed three more on Friday, December 6.
In 2023, I mailed 136 Christmas Cards On Saturday, December 2. I dropped three more in the mail the next day.
In 2022, I mailed 127 Christmas Cards on Thursday, December 15. I dropped two more in the mail on Friday, December 16.
In 2021, I mailed 121 Christmas Cards on Wednesday, December 8.
In 2020, I dropped 119 Christmas Cards at the post office on Sunday night, December 6.
In 2019, I dropped 73 Christmas Cards at the post office on Tuesday night, December 17 and 33 more on Wednesday morning, December 18.
In 2018, I dropped 104 cards at the post office on Monday, December 17.
In 2017, I mailed about 70 cards on Sunday afternoon, December 17 and another 30 plus cards on Monday morning, December 18.

And Just Like That - Season Two
Sharon and I finished watching season two of And Just Like That... We finished watching season one in November.
And Just Like That... is an American comedy drama television series developed by Michael Patrick King for Max. It is a revival and a sequel of the HBO television series Sex and the City created by Darren Star, which is based on Candace Bushnell's newspaper column and 1996 book anthology of the same name.
The first season was billed as a one-off miniseries. However, a second season was announced in March 2022; it premiered on June 22, 2023. In August 2023, the series was renewed for a third season, due to premiere in 2025.
In the second season, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) rekindles her romance with Aidan (John Corbett), but their relationship faces challenges due to his commitment to his children. Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) struggles with her relationships with Che and Steve. Charlotte (Kristin Davis) navigates the complexities of raising teenage daughters.
I found the ending of season two odd and unsatisfying. It will be interesting to see how they carry the storylines forward in season three...
