Nickel Boys

Friday night, Sharon and I watched Nickel Boys. With the Oscar show on Sunday night, we are trying to finish filling out the dance card. The movie got two nominations at the 97th Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Nickel Boys is a historical drama film based on the 2019 novel The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead. It was directed by RaMell Ross, who wrote the screenplay with Joslyn Barnes. The film is inspired by the Dozier School for Boys, a now-closed Florida reform school notorious for its abusive treatment of students. It stars Ethan Herisse, Brandon Wilson, Hamish Linklater, Fred Hechinger, Daveed Diggs, Jimmie Fails, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor.

The film depicts the harrowing experiences of two Black teenagers, Elwood (Herisse) and Turner (Wilson), at a brutal reform school in Jim Crow-era Florida. Elwood's idealism clashes with Turner's cynicism as they navigate the academy's systemic abuse and racism. The film explores their fight for survival and the enduring impact of institutionalized violence.

Nickel Boys was named one of the top 10 films of 2024 by the American Film Institute. In addition to the Oscar nominations, it received the award for Best Cinematography at the 40th Independent Spirit Awards and a Best Motion Picture – Drama nomination at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards.

After watching twenty minutes of the movie, Sharon said "I don't like this movie." At the forty minute mark, she said "I don't understand why this was nominated for best picture." When it was over, Sharon said "that was awful."

The film is shot from an unusual first-person point-of-view. While I respect what the director was trying to accomplish, I found the movie disjointed and hard to follow. I didn't enjoy it. I don't recommend it. It is disappointing that Nickel Boys was nominated for Best Picture and Sing Sing wasn't. The movie isn't winning any Oscars.

Kitchen Remodel - Day #29

The Kitchen remodel has been stalled over the last two weeks for two reasons. First, a new engineering report had to be submitted to the county and the permits updated. This process was completed on Tuesday. A county building inspector came out on Thursday. Second, two panels were missing from the delivery of the cabients for the laundry room. There were finally delivered on Wednesday. Progress on the kitchen and laundry room should now proceed full speed! On Thursday, they worked until late on the laundry room.

Laid

Sharon and I finished watching Laid on Peacock. I had seen the star interviewed on The Daily Show and talked Sharon into watching the series.

Laid is an American dark comedy television series developed by Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna. It is based on the Australian television series of the same name. The series premiered on Peacock on December 19, 2024. It consists of eight episodes.

Ruby, a thirty-something single woman, discovers that anyone she sleeps with dies. The series follows her attempts to navigate this bizarre curse and the chaotic consequences it brings to her life. Her best friend, AJ, helps Ruby to recall her sex timeline and warn past relationships of impending danger.

While the first couple of episodes were interesting, the show started to drag and get repetitious. It ends without resolving any of the open questions about what is happening setting the series up for a second season. Urgh. I am sorry that I talked Sharon into watching it. I don't recommend it.

Emerald Lakes Golf Course

Tuesday morning, I had a Golftec lesson. The lesson focused on my right elbow and getting the club back in the right position so that I can swing inside out rather than outside in.

Tuesday afternoon, Donna, Kevin, Sharon and I played nine holes at Emerald Lakes Golf Course. We teed off at 1:30 pm. I have never played this course. Sharon played there in December with Jack, Jason and Jason's dad. Additionally, Jack played this course a number of times when he was on the golf team in eighth grade [SEAS Golf Qualifying Round, 2012 PAL Golf - SEAS versus SI and 2012 Spring Training Day 4].

I always feel like it is a bad idea to have a lesson and not be able to spend some time at the driving range. Hitting a few balls on the range before the round, I felt inconsistent. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the round. I was very happy with my par on the long par three second hole.

My chipping is continuing to be my achilles heel. Additionally, the greens at Emerald Bay were tricky. I ended up with a fairly honestly scored 52.
After golf, we stopped briefly at Donna and Kevin's house. From there, we had dinner at Raw Sushi. We split garlic edadmame, a dragon roll, a tiger roll, hamachi, vegetable tempura and a Dante's inferno roll.

After a nightcap back at Donna and Kevin's house, we wandered home.

2025 Kings versus Hornets

Larkin and I went to the Sacramento Kings versus Charlotte Hornets NBA Basketball game. Larkin got some extra tickets from the Kings for seats 7 and 8 in row D of section 126.

With the Kings leading by 20 points at halftime, the Hornets got within 11 points in the middle of the third quarter. From there, the Kings outscored the Hornets 60 to 29 and won the game by the score of 130 to 88.

Miles Bridges was the high scorer for the Hornets. He had 23 points on 9 for 19 from the field, 4 for 8 from three and 1 for 2 from the free throw line.

Zach LaVine was the high scorer for the Kings. He had 42 points on 16 for 19 from the field, 8 for 9 from three and 2 for 3 from the free throw line.

A few random notes. I was not impressed with LaMello Ball. Markelle Fultz played eighteen minutes for the Kings; he was the first overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft. Coach Doug Christie emptied the bench in fourth quarter.

With 25 games left in the season, the Kings are sitting in tenth in the Western Conference and in last play-in position. The Kings have 3 wins and 2 losses in games that I have seen in the 2024-2025 season.

2025 San Francisco - Day #4

After breakfast with Holly and Van at the lodge, Sharon and I hiked up the Ghost Trail to the National Cemetery Overlook. We ended up hiking 2.3 miles in about an hour and sixteen minutes. There are a lot of trails that we could explore in a future visit.

Back at the lodge, we packed up the room, checked out and loaded up the car. Waiting for Jack, we hung out on the front porch of the lodge. Jack rolled up in an Uber about 11:45 am.

The three of us walked to lunch at Colibri. The service was horrible. The food was expensive and not very good. I rarely say this, but I don't recommend this restaurant. It was nice to spend some time with Jack.

Walking back to the car, we stopped briefly at the fourth Andy Goldsworthy sculpture: Tree Fall. Located inside the historic Power Magazine built by the Army in the Civil War era, Tree Fall is made of a clay-covered tree branch suspended from the domed roof. Unfortunately, it is located behind a small mesh door; you can't really appreciate it...

After lunch, we dropped Jack off at his apartment. Rolling from the city about 1:50 pm, we were home in less than two hours.

It was a very nice getaway. Unfortunately, nothing got done on the kitchen remodel while we were gone. We are still waiting on updated permits from the county.

2025 San Francisco - Day #3

My original plan for the day was to try and get us to hike part of the San Francisco Doublecross Trail. At breakfast, the four of us decided to explore the Presidio instead.

Sharon was focused on finding several Andy Goldsworthy art pieces that are scattered around the Presidio. In total, Holly, Van, Sharon and I covered 4.1 miles in just over two and a half hours.

We found three different Goldsworhy pieces, including Earth Wall, the Spire and Wood Line. There is a fourth called Tree Fall that wasn't open.

Additionally, we explored the Lyon Steps.

Stopping back at the lodge, we had a quick lunch nearby at Il Parco. After lunch, we split up. Holly, Sharon and I walked across the Tunnel Tops and to the Marina Green and back. We covered 2.1 miles in just over an hour.

We finished the day with dinner at Greens. We caught a Waymo to the restaurant. Jack, Carmen and Drew met us there. Additionally, Holly and Van's kids Brad, Stacey and Krill also were there. I didn't do a very good job of cataloging what everyone had. For entrees, Jack had Risotto Stuffed Filo Rolls, Sharon had pasta and I had raman. I was a very nice dinner! I enjoyed the everning a great deal.
After dinner, Holly, Van, Sharon and I took a Waymo back to the lodge. I crashed hard while Sharon watched Jeopardy.

2025 San Francisco - Day #2 - Presidio Golf Course

The plan for the day was golf at the Presidio Golf Course. I played this course twice before: once with Sharon and Jack in July of 2023 and again in August of 2023 with Jack, Ryan and Jason.

After breakfast at the Lodge at the Presidio, we headed to the golf course. It was literally less than five minutes away. We had a 10:30 am tee time.

Warming up on the driving range, I felt great. Unfortunately, I got off to a horrible start and struggled all day. I felt like I was never on flat ground; the ball was always above or below my feet. My putting was terrible. I ended up picking up and not finishing several holes. After playing pretty well at Hiddenbrook on Wednesday, it was very disappointing.

Then, on the long par five 18th, I drove three shots straight down the middle of the fairway, chipped to the middle of the green and two putted for a bogey. What an odd game...

The four of us took advantage of the wine and cheese reception in the lobby. Getting cleaned up, we headed to dinner. Based on a recommendation from a high school classmate, Sharon made a 7 pm reservation at Sotto Mare in North Beach.

We ended up taking a driverless Waymo rather than an Uber! It was an interesting experience. Holly described it as a Disney ride. The car was clean and comfortable. The Waymo moved at a much more relaxed pace than the Uber drivers that we usually experience. I was very impressed.

We had a very nice dinner. All of us had a blue cheese wedge and crab cioppino for dinner. I also had a couple of oysters.

After dinner, we wandered around the area for a little while. We caught a Waymo back to the lodge. We finished the night sitting in the lobby talking about the plan for Friday. I am trying to get the group to do some of the San Francisco Doublecross Trail.

2025 San Francisco - Day #1 - Hiddenbrook

Heading to San Francisco for a few days, we met Holly and Van for Hiddenbrook Golf Course in Vallejo. While we have never played there, Jack has played this course a couple of times.

I had some apprehension about the day. In late November, my driver was broken in a freak accident. I played at Sea Ranch and at Turkey Creek with my five wood off the tee. I got fitted for a new driver at Golftec in January. Using it on the range, I have been struggling to get comfortable with it.

Teeing off at 10 am, it rained lightly for the first four plus holes. I was very happy with how well I was striking the ball. Unfortunately, I melted down on twelve. After hitting three solid shots on a tough par five, I was about 30 yards in front of the green. I duffed three staight chips and ended up with a nine.

I ended up with a fairly honestly scored 109. I was very happy with how I played.

Leaving the golf course, we head to the Presidio in San Francisco. We are spending three nights at the Lodge at the Presidio. Sharon and I stayed here once before in July of 2021. We are in room 218 with a great view of the Golden Gate Bridge.

After getting settled in the room, the four of us met at the wine and cheese in the lobby. We finished the night with dinner at Dalida just up the street from the lodge. Sharon and Tom had dinner here when they were in San Francisco in January.

Eating family style, the four spilt Octopus and Sujuk, Breaking Bread, Fattoush salad, Anatolian Erishte, Cypriot Lamb Chops and Seasonal Vegetables. The food was very good.

Saturday Night Live 50th Anniversary Special

Sunday night, Sharon and I watched the Saturday Night Live 50th Anniversary Special.

I have always been a Saturday Night Live fan. Although I am not sure if it was the first time I saw SNL, I have a very strong memory of watching a skit with Nooter.  It was Steve Martin and Bill Murray pointing and asking “What the hell is that…?”.  This skit ran in October of 1979, more than forty-five years ago.

I read Live From New York: The Complete, Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live as Told by Its Stars, Writers, and Guests in June of 2020.

During COVID, I watched the first season. Over the last couple of months, I have been working my way slowly through the second season.

Ahead of the anniversary special, Bill Simmons listed his top ten episodes on his February 14, 2025 podcast,. The list included:
  1. Stevie Wonder - season 8, episode 19 - May 7, 1983;

  4. Steve Martin - season 3, episode 18 - April 22, 1978;
  5. Tom Hanks - season 14, episode 1 - October 8, 1988;
  6. David Alan Grier - season 21, episode 8 - December 9, 1995;
  7. William Shatner - season 12, episode 8 - December 20, 1986;

Hacks

Over the last two months, Sharon and I finished watching all three seasons of Hacks.

Hacks is an American comedy-drama television series created by Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky.Starring Jean Smart, Hannah Einbinder, and Carl Clemons-Hopkins, the series centers on the professional relationship between a young comedy writer (Einbinder) and a legendary stand-up comedian (Smart).

Season one finds Deborah Vance (Smart) trying to reinvent her aging act to avoid losing her residency at the Palmetto Casino in Las Vegas. In season two, Vance goes on the road to perfect material for her new stand-up show. Season three focuses on Vance's efforts to leverage the success of her comedy special to host a late night talk show.

The series received critical acclaim and won accolades including Primetime Emmy Awards and Golden Globes. The show won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy for its first and third seasons. Smart also won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for the same seasons.

Both Sharon and I really enjoyed the show. I recommend it. Like Parks and Recreation, we were sad when we were done with season three.

I was surprised to learn that Hannah Einbinder is the daughter of original Saturday Night Live cast member Laraine Newman. We ended up watching her debut stand-up special, Hannah Einbinder: Everything Must Go on Max.

Dinner at Jim and Debbie's

With our kitchen in shambles, our neighbors Jim and Debbie invited us for dinner on Saturday night. We had a very nice meal of barbecued steak, risotto and salad. After dinner, we played pool. It was almost 11:30 pm by the time Sharon and I wandered home.

1,340 miles

In 2024, in spite of two major trips (Viking Homelands and Crossroads of the Adriatic) and two December surgeries, I ended up running, hiking and walking 1,340 miles plus covering 1,510 miles on the Peloton bike. While the running, hiking and walking mileage was down slightly from 2023, the biking mileage was up. While I covered more than 1,300 miles each of the last five years, I think that it will be difficult to reach this level in 2025. As a rule, I am not running two days in a row at this point. I am alternating between running and biking. I view the Run to Feed the Hungry as a measure of my fitness; I was happy with time this year. I did 303 Peloton strength classes last year. This includes upper body and core; it is an average of almost six (5.8) times a week. I played golf 36 times last year! A little more than twenty years ago, I set a goal of running 50 miles when I turned 50. God willing, my long term goal is doing the 490 mile Camino Francés in the September of 2027 when I am 70.

In 2023, in spite of two major trips and a year-end surgery, I ended up running, hiking and walking 1,375 miles plus covering 1,448 miles on the Peloton bike. Both results are up from 2022. The Hadrian's Wall hike helped boost the mileage. Recognizing that I can't carry the kind of speed and distance running that I did fifteen years ago, I continue to morph my daily running routine. After missing a year, I ran the Run to Feed the Hungry. I did 254 Peloton strength classes last year. This includes upper body and core; it is an average of almost five (4.9) times a week. I am very happy with how I have been able to incorporate strength workouts into my daily routine. I played golf eighteen times last year. My goal for 2024 is to add more stretching and mobility workouts, including yoga.

In 2022, I ended up running, hiking and walking 1,318 miles plus covering 1,418 miles on the Peloton bike. Both results are down from 2020 and 2021. I have finally started to incorporate strength training into regular routine; I did 212 Peloton strength classes last year. This includes upper body and core and is an average of more than four (4.1) days a week. I played golf seventeen times last year. I did 21 Peloton Yoga classes. I wrote a separate post on how my body feels [Not 28 Anymore]. With two major trips planned for 2023, it is going to be very difficult to maintain the running and biking mileage.

I finished 2021 more dinged up than any year in recent memory. My heel has brothered me since the Run to Feed the Hungry, I twisted my knee playing golf and then aggravated my hip trying to work myself back in shape after twisting my knee. Nevertheless, last year, I ended running, hiking and walking 1,358 miles plus covering 1,628 miles on the bike. Both of the results are up slightly from 2020. Building on the rhythm, I did 141 Peloton strength classes; this is up substantially from 2020. Incredibly, I played golf nineteen times. My main two goals for 2022 are even more Peloton strength classes combined with some yoga classes.

In 2020, my training routine changed radically in March when we started working from home. I ended up running, hiking and walking 1,339 miles; this is 25.7 miles a week. The difference was I almost doubled my miles on the Peloton bike. I covered 1,606 miles on the bike. The most miles I ever did on the old bike was 1,092 in 2013. Additionally, I did sixty-one Peleton weight classes; I am finally getting into a rhythm that includes a regular strength workout. My goal for 2021 is to double down on the strength classes and add a few more yoga classes. I only did six yoga classes in 2020. One side note, we played golf twelve times last year. This probably more golf than I have played in any year since the early 1980s when Nooter and Wallen were still living in Sacramento.

In 2019, I ran, hiked and walked 1,285 miles. This is fewest miles that I have logged in more than fifteen years. It is a little deceiving; I added 871 miles on the Peloton Bike. This is the most miles I have done on a bike since 2014. I have been trying to focus on a broader range of activities. To this end, I topped the move goal (900 calories) on my apple watch for 155 straight days in the last half to the year. I also did 761 push-ups and weights as part of the Peloton bike work-out 30 times. I am still struggling to incorporate a strength work-out into my regular routine... My goal for 2020 is to run and cycle more miles and do more push-ups and weight work-outs than 2019!

In 2018, I ran 1,605 miles and cycled 91 miles. My goal for the year was to average 30 miles a week. I ended up averaging 30.8 miles per week. It was the most miles that I have run in a year since 2011. In addition to the mileage goal, I focused on my weekly steps total. My goal was 140,000 steps a week. Essentially, I was running 30 plus miles a week and walking 30 plus miles a week. Finally, I finished the year with a string of more than 70 days meeting the move goal on my Apple watch (900 active calories). Combined all of this kept my weight in a nice range for last half of the year. I am switching my goals for 2019. With the purchase of the Peloton bike as a present for our anniversary, I am going to try to do more 1,000 miles on the bike in 2019. I have also started to do push-ups again; my goal is 3,000 push-ups in 2019.

In 2017, I ran 1,510 miles and cycled 131 miles. My physical challenge for the year was running 200 miles in July! My 2017 Run To Feed The Hungry time was the best since 2014. Unlike 2016, I finished the year feeling strong.

In 2016, I ran 1,340 miles and cycled 474 miles. This is the fewest miles that I have run in a year in at least the last eleven years. I struggled the last couple months of 2016. Between the new job, a couple of minor medical procedures, getting sick, settling Jack in Georgetown and a change in my routine from the last two and a half years, I lost a couple notches in my level of fitness. This was highlighted by embarrassing times during the Run to Feed the Hungry. Like the American River 50 in 2007, I looking for a physical challenge in 2017. I am toying with the idea of a 100 to 120 mile hike along a section of the Pacific Coast Trail in Northern California [Boreal Ridge on Highway 80 to Chester on Highway 36].

In 2015, I ran 1,604 miles and cycled 401 miles. My goal was to work out with weighs 52 times this year; I have failed over the last three years at my strength training goal.

In 2014, I ran 1,583 miles and cycled 886 miles. I averaged 30.4 miles running and 17.0 miles cycling every week! My goal was to restart a sit-up, push-up and light routine that I have done in the past. I failed in this goal.

In 2013, I ran 1,521 miles and cycled 1,092 miles. My goal for 2013 was to best both the running and the cycling totals. I accomplished the running goal. Additionally, I was going to try and lift at least 48 times (4 times a month) at Arden Hills. I failed in this goal.

In 2012, my goal was to start cross-training. I ran and hiked 1,441 miles. This included two full weeks off during the trip to Italy in the summer. Additionally, I cycled 1,133 miles. Most of this cycling was done on a stationary bike. I covered 1,016 miles virtually biking across America.

In 2011, I ran 1,763 miles. This seems impossible in a year that I took almost nine weeks of vacation!

In 2010, I ran 1,700 miles. This included two full weeks off during the trip to Spain in the summer.

In 2009, I ran 1,832 miles.

In 2008, I ran more than 1,925 miles!

In 2007, I ran 1,721 miles. This included successfully completing the American River 50.

In 2006, I ran slightly less than 1,680 miles.

In 2005, I ran slightly less than 1,630 miles.

On our trip to Florida in Summer of 2004, I started to play with the idea of running the American River 50 in April of 2007. I committed myself and started to train.

Super Bowl LIX

Sharon and I went to a Super Bowl Party at our neighbors Greg and Michele's house. The group included Greg and Michele, Jim and Debi, Debi's daugther, Ed and Mary Lou, Jacek and Laurie, Brad, Heidi and Clark, and Sharon and I. There was one other person whose name I didn't get...

The Philadelphia Eagles beat the Kansas City Chiefs by the score of 40 to 22. Frankly, the game wasn't even that close. The Eagles led by the score of 34 to 0 late in the third quarter. Jalen Hurts was the MVP. Although I have called Patrick Mahomes a witch over the years and refused to beat against him, he had a horrible game.

The Apprentice

Friday night, Sharon and I watched The Apprentice. We are working to fill out our 2025 Oscar Nominations dance card. The film received two Academy Award nominations.

The Apprentice is an independent biographical drama film directed by Ali Abbasi and written by Gabriel Sherman. The film stars Sebastian Stan as Trump, Jeremy Strong as Cohn, Martin Donovan as Trump's father Fred, and Maria Bakalova as Trump's first wife, Ivana. For their performances, Stan and Strong each received nominations at the Academy Awards, Golden Globes and BAFTAs for Best Actor and Supporting Actor respectively.

The film explores Donald Trump's early career in the 1970s and 80s New York City real estate scene. The film focuses on his complex relationship with lawyer Roy Cohn, who becomes his mentor. Cohn's influence on Trump, including his "win at all costs" mentality, is a central theme. The movie also delves into Trump's personal life, including his first marriage to Ivana Zelníčková.

Jeremy Strong's performance is very good. Stan's performance is solid; he does a good job of morphing into Trump's verbal and physical tics over the course of the movie. Neither of them are going to win Oscars...

Kitchen Remodel - Day #8

Sharon spent more than two hours in the morning reviewing the kitchen remodel with the contractor (Joseph) and the designer (Laura). I wandered in and out of the discussion. Now that we are down to the studs, there are a number of items that need to be reworked. This includes adjusting walls around the location of several load bearing studs and the design of the hood over the oven.

In the afternoon, the electrician (Levi) spent a couple of hours working on the kitchen.

The Holiday

Monday night, December 23, Sharon and I watched The Holiday on Amazon Prime. Sharon wanted to watch a holiday movie. She got the suggestion for this movie from Caroline Chamber's Christmas Movie Approval Matrix.

The Holiday is a 2006 romantic comedy film written, produced and directed by Nancy Meyers. Co-produced by Bruce A. Block, it was filmed in both California and in England.

It stars Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz. Jude Law and Jack Black were cast as the film's leading men Graham and Miles, with Eli Wallach, Shannyn Sossamon, Edward Burns, and Rufus Sewell playing supporting roles.

Two heartbroken women, an American movie trailer editor and a British journalist, impulsively swap homes for the Christmas holidays in a desperate attempt to escape their romantic woes. While in each other's homes, they unexpectedly encounter charming locals, leading to unexpected and heartwarming romances.

My only comment about the movie is that Jack Black seems very miscast. He is not a leading man.

XP Golf

Monday morning, I reserved a private bay for two hours at XP Golf, an indoor golf simulator, in Roseville. I spent about 45 minutes working through the clubs on a driving range and then played one of the courses. I made a mess of the course. I hit more shots into the water and trees than the fairways. Additionally, I couldn't get the right feel for the putting speed... I need to get back out of the driving range later this week when the rain stops.

Kitchen Remodel - Day #6

Over the first week, the contractor has run into a couple of issues. There are several large load bearing studs that will require some changes in the original design for the new kitchen.

The initial pictures of the kitchen before the demo started are here.

The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)

Saturday night, Sharon and I watched The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected). Sharon had seen the movie on a New York Times list of the best films on Netflix.

The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)is a 2017 American comedy-drama film. It was directed and written by Noah Baumbach. The film stars Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman, Elizabeth Marvel, Emma Thompson. The ensemble cast also includes Candice Bergen, Adam Driver, Sigourney Weaver and Judd Hirsch.

The film explores the complex relationships of the eccentric Meyerowitz family, focusing on the adult children of an aging, narcissistic sculptor (Dustin Hoffman). The sculptor's three kids, Danny (Adam Sandler), Matthew (Ben Stiller), and Jean, grapple with their father's legacy and their own personal struggles as they reconnect in New York City. Their interactions are filled with humor, resentment, and poignant moments of connection as they confront their past and present. Ultimately, the film examines themes of family, art, and the challenges of aging.

The Meyerowitz Stories is not a bad movie. It was a nice change of pace from the other films that we have been watching lately... I was particularly impressed by Adam Sandler's performance.
