At DarkHorse Golf Club

Sharon and I played golf with the Sanborns at DarkHorse Golf Club. I shot a very liberally scored winter rules 102. I feel like I have been hitting the ball a lot better. This was the fourth time that I have played golf in less than a month. Starting with the back nine on the second day of the Petersen Shootout, I have been driving the ball well off the tee. I had one drive on the back nine that was almost 260 yards. Putting continues to be a struggle; I had 10 three-putts and one four-put. urggh…

After golf we made a stop at Cante Ao Vinho for a quick wine tasting. We essentially crashed someone's graduation party from McGeorge Law School.

We finished the evening with dinner at Sanborn's new house in Rocklin. They served a great dinner of lobster tails.

Redshirts: A Novel with Three Codas by John Scalzi

I finished reading Redshirts: A Novel with Three Codes by John Scalzi. Looking for something light to read after the Thomas Jefferson biography, I read this book as an e-book in my Kindle app on my iPhone and iPad. The book caught my eye because it won the 2013 Hugo Award. The Hugo Awards are a set of awards given annually for the best science fiction or fantasy works of the previous year. I previously read Old Man's War by Scalzi and enjoyed that book a great deal.

While I had an inkling about the plot, I didn't quite realize what I was getting into. I knew that the story paid homage to the original Star Trek series. What I didn't realize was that it that the plot includes one of my least favorite science fiction vehicles (time travel) and an odd variation on the multiverse hypothesis.

I really didn't like the book about the time I finished the main section. I will admit that the three codas softened that dislike a little. Nevertheless, I don't recommend that book.

2014 Walbeck Elite Games #3 and #4

Back at McAuliffe Fields at 8 am for the second day of the River City Travel Ball Memorial Day Madness Tournament, the Walbeck Elite played IBAC Blue. In order to have any chance to play on Monday, the Elite team really needed to win this game. Trevor Beards who played with Jack on the Jesuit JV baseball team was playing for IBAC Blue.

Leading off, Jack was 3 for 3 with a double, two singles, a walk, three stolen bases and a run scored. In his first at-bat, he ran the count to 0 and 2, fouled off a pitch and then hit a hard ground ball at the third baseman for a single. Jack stole second, but was doubled off second base on Kyle's line drive to the shortstop. Jack crushed a 3 and 2 pitch for a line drive double down the third base line in his second plate appearance. He went to third on Lee's fielder's choice grounder to the third baseman. The third baseman got the ball and tried to tag Jack going to third. Jack was already pass him and was safe at third. He scored on Roessler's sacrifice fly to right. In his third at-bat, Jack drove the seventh pitch into right field for a line drive single. It was a very nice piece of hitting. He stole second, went to third on a passed ball, but ended the inning there when Richardson struck out. Jack walked on five pitches in his fourth plate appearance. He stole second, but ended the inning there when Richardson grounded out to short.

Playing centerfield, Jack had three put-outs.

Leading by the score of 5 to 2 in the bottom of the seventh, the Elite let the game slip away. The game ended up tied at 5 to 5. Unfortunately, the Elite gave up 2 unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning that proved to be the difference in the game. The scorecard is here.

With the tie, the Elite ended up the pool play seeded eighth out of the eight teams. They played the Beasts in the consolation game of the tournament at 7:45 pm Sunday night. Jack Wolger who played with Jack on the Jesuit JV baseball team was playing for the Beasts.

In all four games over the weekend, the Elite were the visiting team. As a result, Jack had to step to the plate to start the game in all four games…

Leading off, Jack was 0 for 2 with a walk, a run scored and a RBI. In his first at-bat, he walked on five pitches. He stole second, went to third on Dailey's ground out and scored on a passed ball. Jack ran the count to 1 and 2, fouled off a pitch and then hit a grounded to the shortstop in this second plate appearance. He was thrown out at first. In his third at-bat with the bases loaded in the top of the fourth, Jack hit a 1 and 2 pitch for a hard grounder to the right side. Initially, I thought that it was going to get through, but the second baseman made a nice diving stop. Jack was thrown out at first, but Richardson scored from third for the RBI.

Playing centerfield for four innings, Jack had two put-outs.

Although the Elite only managed two hits, the Beasts gave up 9 unearned runs on 4 errors and a handful of passed balls and wild pitches. The Elite won the game by the score of 9 to 0 in five innings. The scorecard is here.

The Silverhawks won the tournament. The final tournament results are here.

For the summer season, the Elite have a record of 1 win, 2 losses and 1 tie. The game log is here.

2014 Walbeck Elite Games #1 and #2

The Walbeck Elite team played its first games of the season in the River City Travel Ball Memorial Day Madness Tournament. The Elite team is made up of 16U players, but will be playing mostly 18U tournaments over the next two months.

In a 8:00 am game at McAuliffe Field, the Elite played the Silverhawks. Jack has played against the Silverhawks several times in the last couple of years [4/15/2012, 5/24/2013 and 7/20/2013], but it always seems like a different roster.

Leading off, Jack was 0 for 4 reaching on an error. In his first at-bat, he ran the count to 1 and 2, fouled off pitched and struck out swinging on a low pitch. Jack grounded a 0 and 1 pitch to shortstop and was thrown out at first in his second plate appearance. In his third at-bat, he grounded a 2 and 2 pitch to the right side that the second baseman couldn't handle. Jack was safe on an error. He went to second on a passed ball, to third on Dailey's single to right and was called out at the plate on Lee's fielder's choice chopper to the first baseman. Jack made a great slide and looked safe. Jack grounded a 0 and 2 pitch to the pitcher in his fourth plate appearance and was out at first.

Playing centerfield, Jack had 3 put-outs.

Looking a little flat and giving up a two run homer to left, the Elite lost the game by the score of 8 to 6. The scorecard is here.

After a break, the Elite played West Coast Baseball at 12:45 pm. This is not a team that Jack has faced before. Additionally, I didn't recognize any of the players on the roster.

Leading off, Jack was 1 for 3 with a stolen base. In his first at-bat, Jack ran the count to 1 and 2, fouled off a pitch and struck on a pitch in the dirt. He was thrown out at first on the dropped third strike. Jack ran the count to 1 and 2, fouled off two pitches and then hit a grounder deep in the hole for a single in his second plate appearance. He stole second and went to third on Dailey's ground out to the pitcher, but ended the inning there when Richardson grounded out to short.

Playing centerfield, Jack had 2 put-outs.

The Elite managed only two hits: Jack's single and Isola's line drive into center. The West Coast Baseball's pitcher [Murphy] pitched seven strong innings, including striking out 10 and walking none. Someone said on Sunday that the pitcher was throwing 85 mph. The Elite lost the game by the score of 7 to 2. The scorecard is here.

Both Elite and Hard90 finished the first day of the tournaments with 2 losses and no wins. The Elite are going to need a win on Sunday and a lot of help from other teams to make it to the single elimination round on Monday.

On the season, the Elite have a record of 0 wins and 2 losses. The game log is here.

American River Trail Bike Ride

On Friday morning, Sharon and I rode over 19 miles from Arden Pond to the Hazel fish hatchery and back. Repeating a Note to Self, I have got to get a road bike. Riding my mountain bike, I struggled to keep with Sharon cruising along on her road bike.

First record of Montezuma was June 1850 when partners Solomon Miller and Peter K. Aurand, proprietors of the 'Montezuma Tent,' were attacked and Aurand killed by a group of Mexicans during the foreign miners tax excitement of that period. Due to the lack of water, little mining occurred here until 1852 when a ditch and flume were completed bringing water for placer mining. Two types of mining were carried on, placer operations on the flats and tunnels extending under Table Mountain. The gravel produced 3-1/2 C. per pan in the mid 50s. The yield was from $5 to $10 per day. One placer nugget found in 1853 weighed 18 lbs. 8 oz. By late 1852 the population was about 800. At its zenith Montezuma City had four saloons, two hotels, Adams Express Co., post office, church, some homes, and many tents and cabins. The town was nearly destroyed by an incendiary fire which started in Clarks Hotel on June 29, 1866.

Missouri! - Virtually Biking Across America - Day 88

Virtually Biking Across America - Day 88

On Day 88, I rode 10.00 miles across northwestern Missouri. Starting the ride at the Pony Express National Museum [N 39° 45.360 W 094° 50.938], I rode east on Penn and Mitchell Streets to Highway 169. I went south on Highway 169 until it connected with Highway 71 [Interstate 29]. I continued south on Highway 71 and stopped under the Pigeon Hill Road underpass.

My rough plan for the route of the next stages is to travel south to Kansas City and then east towards St. Louis.

2014 Jesuit Spring Sports Banquet

On Sunday night after I got back from the Petersen Shootout, Sharon, Jack and I went to the Jesuit Spring Sports Banquet at the Father Barry Gym. This was the second year in a row [2013] that we have gone. It included the Baseball, Tennis, Swimming, Diving, Track & Field and Volleyball teams. After a short speech by the athletic director and a pasta dinner, the teams broke up into separate rooms. The JV baseball team went to the library.

Coach Tucey was very brief. He gave each boy a certificate. After the individual certificates, four awards with plaques were given for the season: Alex - Coach's Award; Cooper - Most Improved; Sam - Silver Slugger and a special coaches acknowledgment to Andrew Child.

2014 Petersen Shootout Day 3

Larkin and I were both up fairly early. We had breakfast at the hotel and then packed up the room.

I rolled from the hotel a little after 9:00 am. After a quick stop for one waymark in Carson City, I headed back towards Reno and then down I-80 back to Sacramento. I made a quick stop in Truckee at the Donner Party Monument. I was back in Carmichael about 11:45 am.

My only regret is that the group didn't have a suite like it did in Reno in 2011 and 2012. The group didn't get around to hanging out in the suite with a floor show like it did in either of those years or in 2010 when the tournament was in Carson City. I am particularly fond of Sean Connery singing Jim Croce songs. I am sorry that Kevin and Mike didn't get a chance to have that experience.

All and all, it was a great weekend. I always enjoy Larkin's company.

2014 Petersen Shootout Day 2

The golf trip includes a bunch of complementary stuff, including a free breakfast each morning. Moving a little slow, Larkin and I eventually wandered down and had breakfast in the hotel. Catching up with Gainsley, we wandered across the street to an odd little shopping mall looking for a charger for my phone. I left home without one…

Back at the hotel, we packed everyone in my car and left about 9:30 am with the intention of making a stop for provisions. We played the second day at the Sunridge Golf Club. Rather than playing your own ball, it was a shamble; you play the best drive and then your own ball from there.

One of the highlights of the day had to be Gainsley's pants!

Teeing off at 11 am with a shotgun start from hole #2, we played with the same foursome as the first day [Larkin, Gainsley and Mike Roessler]. I continued to struggle with my putting, but started to drive the ball well on the back nine. I think that we may have used 5 or 6 of my drives on the back nine. I ended up with a liberal winter rules 101.

After everyone was finished, there was a closest to the pin contest on the 19th hole. I am not sure who won.

Heading back to the hotel, we stopped at Best Buy so I could get a phone charger. Getting cleaned up, there was a group prime rib dinner at Red's Old 395 Grill. The restaurant put the group in a large room where they could close the doors.

I played Blackjack for about an hour and a half after dinner with a couple of the younger guys in the group (Rod's nephew et al). Putting down $100, I walked away with $149.50. I was very pleased. I finished the night watching SNL and listening to Larkin snore.

2014 Petersen Shootout Day 1

For the fourth time in five years, Larkin and I played in the Petersen Shootout [2010, 2011 and 2012]. We missed last year when Rod kept moving the date around and it finally landed on a weekend when we were in Hawaii. This year, I recruited Gainsley to join us. The foursome got filled out at the last minute by Mike Roessler, the dad of one of Coop and Jack's classmates and teammates on the Jesuit baseball team. After playing in Reno for three years, the tournament has moved back to Carson City.

I left Carmichael after 10 am and rolled into the golf course about 12:20 pm. We played the first day at the Thunder Canyon Country Club. After playing with Gainsley on Wednesday, I was stiff as I tried to warm up on the driving range. I got off to a horrible start on the first hole, but settled down a little as the day wore on. I had a couple of pars on a Par 5 and a Par 3 on the back nine.

There was a very stiff wind blowing all day. It seemed to impact my putting as much as anything. I just couldn't find the right speed or line on the greens all day. I swear that the wind was blowing the putts all over the greens. I ended up shooting a liberal winter rules score of 110.

Afterwards, we headed to the hotel and got checked in. The group is staying at the Carson Station Hotel in Carson City. Getting cleaned up, Larkin, Gainsley, Mike and I headed to Reds395 across the street for dinner.

I finished the evening playing Blackjack at the hotel. They have added a few Blackjack tables and a craps table since we were here in 2010. The group took over most of the Blackjack tables. I ended up playing for almost three hours (about 10 pm to 1 am) sitting next to Rod's brother Scott for about half that time. Starting with a $100 stake, I walked away with $97!?!

Virtually Biking Across America - Day 87

On Day 87, I rode 8.7 miles across northeastern Kansas. Starting at the intersection of Highway 36 and St Columbus Road outside of Wathena, Kansas, I headed east on Highway 36. Exiting the highway on East St Joseph Street, I took Vernon Road to Roseport Road through the town of Elwood and past the Elwood Pony Express Stables [N 39° 45.054 W 094° 52.229]. Getting back on Highway 36, I crossed the Missouri River. Exiting the highway at 10th Street in St. Joseph, I rode down 10th to Penn Street. Turning left, I ended the ride at the Pony Express National Museum [N 39° 45.360 W 094° 50.938].

Since starting this ride almost two and a half years ago, I have been following the Pony Express Trail east. This marks the eastern end of the trail. I have not yet decided what route to take as I continue east…

CIF Sac-Joaquin D1 Baseball Champions

With Jesuit knocked out of the CIF Sac San Joaquin Division 1 baseball play-offs for the first time since 2002, I was curious who has won the championship in the past. Since 2005, only three teams have been section championship: Elk Grove (4), Jesuit (2) and St. Mary's (3). Elk Grove is on track to win it again this year.

2005 D1-North Elk Grove D1-Final Elk Grove
2006 D1-North Elk Grove D1-Final Elk Grove
2007 D1-North Elk Grove D1-Final Elk Grove
2008 D1-North Jesuit D1-Final Jesuit
2009 D1-North Jesuit D1-Final Jesuit
2010 D1-North Elk Grove D1-Final St. Mary's
2011 D1-North Jesuit D1-Final St. Mary's
2012 D1-North Franklin D1-Final St. Mary's
2013 D1-North Elk Grove D1-Final Elk Grove

Looking forward over the next two years, I am hopeful that Jesuit can get back into the play-offs next year. With only one senior starting for Elk Grove this year, they are going to be extremely tough next year; they are very deep in underclassmen pitching. Jesuit will be in the same league with Elk Grove next year. I am hopeful that Jesuit can make a deep run in 2016 when Jack is a senior.

Next year as part of the league realignment, the Delta league will include:

  • Davis Sr.
  • Elk Grove
  • Franklin
  • Grant
  • Jesuit
  • Monterey Trail
  • Pleasant Grove
  • Sheldon

At WildHawk Golf Club

As a tune-up for Rod's tournament this weekend, Kevin and I played at the WildHawk Golf Club. It was probably as well as I have ever played. I birdied the first hole. Driving off the tee consistently all day, I ended up shooting a 49 on both the front nine and the back nine for a 98.

Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power by John Meacham

In April, I finished reading Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power by Jon Meacham. I bought the book after seeing the author interviewed on the Jon Stewart Show. I previously read Meacham's book on Andrew Jackson. This is part of my project to read books about all of the presidents.

Ever since Sharon, Jack and I visited Monticello in 2011, I have been interested in reading a book on Jefferson. The Art of Power focuses more on how rather than what. Although it traces his life, it looks more at the influences on Jefferson's life and how he built and used his stature. For example, although it mentioned the Lewis and Clark expedition, it was only in very general terms. Note of self, I need to read Undaunted Courage. I also need to read a book on the War of 1812. The build-up to the War of 1812 is apparent in Jefferson's second term, but the book only mentions the war in passing.

Jefferson had an amazing life. He was the principal author of the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson served as Governor of Virginia, Minister to France, Secretary of State, Vice President and finally President.

I was struck on two things in particular in the book. First, Jefferson spent five years living in France as the United States Minister. This is the period right before the French Revolution. This had an impact on his world view and how he viewed the role of the individual in government.

Second, I didn't realize that there was battle between the Federalists and the Republicans during the period over the shape that the fledgling government should take. The Federalist continued to push the idea of a monarchy in some shape or form.

I am always fascinated by the interaction of the physical world with the literary world. Having toured Monticello, I particularly enjoyed the sections of the book that were set in his unique bedroom and study. I had the same experience with Wallen at Mount Vernon.

This is a solid book; I enjoyed it. Given that this book does not focus on details, I am going to have to go back and read another Thomas Jefferson biography to fill in some of the holes.

California Historical Landmark #406

First called Savage Diggins after the man who discovered gold here in 1848, the town was renamed Big Oak Flat about 1850 after the giant oak tree that stood in the center of town, near this spot. The oak, which was about 13 feet in diameter, was undermined in 1869 and burned in 1890, only pieces remained in 1949. Rich placer and lode mines are reported to have yielded $28,000,000 during the town's heyday. Stone buildings erected in 1852 were still standing in 1949.

Jesuit JV baseball versus Oak Ridge

imagePlaying the final game of the season, the Jesuit Marauders JV baseball team played the Oak Ridge Trojans in the third game of a three game series over three days. The Marauders beat the Trojans by the scores of 10 to 5 and 19 to 16 last year. They won the first game of this year's series by the score of 15 to 5 and the second game of this year's series by the score of 9 to 7.

Leading off, Jack was 0 for 2. In his first at-bat, he struck out looking a high 0 and 2 pitch. Jack crushed a 1 and 2 pitch for a hard high fly ball in his second plate appearance. I don't think I have ever seen him hit one so far up in the air. I thought for a second that the left fielder was going to have trouble getting back to get it, but he made an awkward catch for the out. Jack and I talked in the car later about how if he had gotten his hands on top of the ball it would have been on top of the batting cages in left field.

Playing centerfield, Jack had two put-outs and an error in three innings. In the top of the second, a soft fly ball was hit in front of Jack. Initially, I thought that he was going to try and dive for it, but back off at the last second. As the ball bounced in front of him, it looked like he took his eyes off the ball to see what the runner was doing rounding first. The ball got by him. When he finally caught up to the ball, Jack made a poor throw into the infield. By the time it was all said and done, the runner was on third. I charged Jack with an error.

Batting fifteen different players, the Marauders won the game by the score of 3 to 1 behind a strong pitching performance. The box score is here and the scorecard is here.

Wolger (4-2, 9 starts, 1 appearance, 42.67 innings, ERA 2.13) was the winning pitcher. He pitched a complete game striking out six and walking only one.

The Jesuit JV baseball team finished the season with 24 wins and 4 losses. Their league record was 14 wins and 1 loss. The game log is here. Behind Coaches Tucey and Lewis, this is the fourteenth straight year that the JV team has won their league.

After the game, a large group of the JV players and their parents walked over to watch the end of the varsity game. With lots of running amok by the umpires [coach P got tossed], the Marauders Varsity team lost the game by the score of 6 to 4. For the first time in eleven years, the Jesuit varsity team missed the play-offs.

Jesuit JV baseball versus Oak Ridge

The Jesuit Marauders JV baseball team played the Oak Ridge Trojans in the second game of a three game series over three days. The Marauders beat the Trojans by the scores of 10 to 5 and 19 to 16 last year. They won the first game of this year's series by the score of 15 to 5.

Leading off, Jack was 0 for 2 with two walks and two runs scored. In his first at-bat, he walked on five pitches. He went to second on Iwasa's walk, to third on Alex's single to left and scored on Jonah's double to right center. Jack walked on four pitches in his second plate appearance. He went to third on Iwasa's fly ball down the right field line and then scored on Cosca's single to left. A little over a week ago, I commented to Rod that Jack has not walked as much as last year. In the last five games, he has eight walks!

In his third at-bat, Jack grounded a 1 and 2 pitch up the middle. The second baseman made a nice play and threw him out at first. Jack grounded a 0 and 2 pitch back to the pitcher in his fourth plate appearance and was thrown out at first.

Playing centerfield, Jack had one put-out. With one game left in the season, he has more put-outs than anyone on the team except the catchers and first baseman.

With Jack and Iwasa scoring five of the nine runs from the top two spots in the line-up, the Marauders won the game by the score of 9 to 7. The Trojans loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh, but a come-backer to the pitcher to start a double play ended the threat. The box score is here and the scorecard is here.

Stiltner (4-0, 1 save, 4 starts, 5 appearances, 24.67 innings, ERA 2.84) was the winning pitcher. Beards (2-0, 1 save, 2 starts, 7 appearances, 23.67 innings, ERA 2.07) pitched part of the fourth, the fifth, the sixth and the seventh innings to get the save.

The Jesuit JV baseball team now has 23 wins and 4 losses. Their league record is 13 wins and 1 loss. The game log is here.

The last game of the season is Wednesday night against Oak Ridge at home. It is hard to believe that the season is almost over; it has gone fast. For the varsity team, there will be some drama on Wednesday night. The varsity needs a win or a loss by Folsom to make the play-offs.

Jesuit JV Baseball versus Oak Ridge

The Jesuit Marauders JV baseball team played the Oak Ridge Trojans in the first game of a three game series over the next three days. The Marauders beat the Trojans by the scores of 10 to 5 and 19 to 16 last year.

Jack had one of his best days of the year at the plate. Leading off, he was 3 for 3 with 2 singles, 2 runs scored, 2 stolen bases, a double, an intentional walk and an RBI. In his first at-bat, Jack drove a 1 and 2 pitch into right center for a single. He stole third and scored on Cosca's double. On the seventh pitch of his second plate appearance, Jack crushed a ball to left center for a double. It may be the farthest ball that I have seen hit this season at home. It bounced against the varsity fence. I am going to try and remember to pace it off on Wednesday to get an idea of how far it was hit. He stole third, but ended the inning there when Cosca flied out to right. In his third at-bat, Jack grounded the first pitch through the left side for a single and an RBI (Kyle). Sogard was thrown out trying to go from first to third to end the inning. Jack was walked intentionally in the fourth plate appearance!?! I don't believe that I have ever seen him walked intentionally before. He scored on Iwasa's triple to right.

Playing centerfield for five innings, Jack had one put-out.

With the starting pitcher struggling, the Marauders fell behind by the score of 5 to 4 in the top of the second. Behind a strong relief performance, the Marauders bounced back and chewed up the Oak Ridge pitching. Jack and Alex were both three for three. The Marauders won the game by the score of 15 to 5 in six innings. The box score is here and the scorecard is here.

Child (3-1, 1 save, 0 starts, 11 appearances, 22.00 innings, ERA 2.86) was the winning pitcher.

The Jesuit JV baseball team now has 22 wins and 4 losses. Their league record is 12 wins and 1 loss. The game log is here.

Jesuit JV baseball versus Pleasant Grove

Playing their fourth game in five nights, the Jesuit Marauders JV baseball team played the last game of a three game series against the Pleasant Grove Eagles. This is the fifth time that the Marauders faced the Eagles this season. They have beat them by the scores of 6 to 2, 4 to 0, 3 to 1 and 11 to 1. It is hard for me to believe that they can beat a team five times in one season…

Leading off, Jack was 0 for 1 with two walks and a run scored. In his first at-bat at the beginning of the game, Jack walked on six pitches. He was forced out at second on Iwasa's double play ball to shortstop. Jack walked on seven pitches in his second plate appearance. He scored from first on Iwasa's double to right center. In his third at-bat with one out and runners on second and third, Jack grounded a 1 and 2 pitch to shortstop and was thrown out at first.

I was mentioning to Rod earlier this week that Jack has not been drawing as many walks this year. Jack then walks five times in the last three games.

Playing centerfield for five innings, Jack had two put-outs.

Jack scored the first run of the game in the top of the third inning. With the help of two errors on the second baseman, the Marauders plated three more runs in the inning. Behind a strong pitching performance, the Marauders went on beat the Eagles by the score of 5 to 0. The box score is here and the scorecard is here.

Wolger (3-2, 8 starts, 1 appearance, 35.67 innings, ERA 2.35) was the winning pitcher. Throwing a complete game, he struck out 8, while giving up three hits and one walk.

The Jesuit JV baseball team now has 21 wins and 4 losses. Their league record is 11 wins and 1 loss. The game log is here.

The Marauders finish the season with a three game series against Oak Ridge on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week. The end of the season is actually coming at a good time. Given the baseball schedule on the last two weeks, his academic load and his social life, Jack is starting to wear down. He needs a break so that he can focus on finals. It is possible that Jack and a couple of other JV players might be pulled up to varsity for the play-offs. Although the Jesuit varsity was sweep by Pleasant Grove this week, I believe that Sheldon's loss to Folsom last night almost guarantees the varsity a spot in the play-offs.

California Historical Landmark #445

First Placer camp in east belt section of Mother Lode. Gold was discovered here in 1853 by the Scott brothers, descendants of Cherokee Indians. Scars of placer 'diggins' in every little arroyo in Cherokee Valley, healed over by Mother Nature, were later replaced by a quartz mine. Present-day productive farms in this area were once rich placer grounds.
