I finished reading Redshirts: A Novel with Three Codes by John Scalzi. Looking for something light to read after the Thomas Jefferson biography, I read this book as an e-book in my Kindle app on my iPhone and iPad. The book caught my eye because it won the 2013 Hugo Award. The Hugo Awards are a set of awards given annually for the best science fiction or fantasy works of the previous year. I previously read Old Man's War by Scalzi and enjoyed that book a great deal.
While I had an inkling about the plot, I didn't quite realize what I was getting into. I knew that the story paid homage to the original Star Trek series. What I didn't realize was that it that the plot includes one of my least favorite science fiction vehicles (time travel) and an odd variation on the multiverse hypothesis.
I really didn't like the book about the time I finished the main section. I will admit that the three codas softened that dislike a little. Nevertheless, I don't recommend that book.
