Jesuit Frosh baseball versus Casa Roble

The Jesuit Marauders frosh baseball team played their 23rd game of the season against the Casa Roble Rams. The Marauders beat the Rams by the score of 16 to 6 in their first meeting.

After playing in thirteen straight games since March 19 against St. Mary's, Jack did not get a plate appearance or play in the field. A number of other players who played in the Christian Brothers game, including Iwasa, Sogard, Jordan, Bailey and Alex also didn't play in the game.

Scoring 5 runs in the second inning and 6 runs in the fourth inning, the Marauders rolled over the Rams by the score of 12 to 1. The Rams only managed to get one hit. Nine of the twelve runs that Casa Roble allowed were unearned. The box score is here and the scorecard is here.

Colombara (2 - 1, ERA 2.56, 1 start, 5 relief appearances, 13.2 innings) was the winning pitcher. Starosciak pitched the fifth inning.

The Jesuit Frosh baseball team now has 18 wins and 5 losses. In league, they have 11 wins and 1 loss. The game log is here. The Marauders next game is Wednesday, May 1 at home against Oak Ridge. Behind Christian Brothers, Oak Ridge is the second strongest opponent in league.

Jesuit Frosh baseball versus Christian Brothers

The Jesuit Marauders frosh baseball team played their 22nd game of the season against the Christian Brothers Falcons. Christian Brothers is one of Jesuit's biggest rivals. The Marauders lost to the Falcons by the score of 11 to 8 in early April. As I noted in my post about the earlier game, there are several boys that Jack has played baseball with and gone to school with on the Christian Brothers team.

Jack lead off and played left field. Although Jack has been played centerfield most of the season, the coaches started Nile in center. Nile is the fastest player on the team and can cover a little more ground defensively than Jack.

At the plate, Jack was 2 for 3 with a walk, two singles and two runs scored. In his first at-bat, Jack drove a low outside 1 and 1 pitch into right center to lead off the game. Jack said after the game that the pitcher threw him the same pitch three straight times. He crushed the third one. One of the things that surprised me was that the Falcons started the same pitcher as they did in the first game. Talking to Alan Wackman at the varsity game, he said that CB really only had two strong pitchers: Andrew and Jeremy. Running through a stop sign, Jack went from first to third on Nick's line drive into right. The throw was off-line and the third baseman tried to throw back to second to get Nick. The ball sailed into right field and Jack raced home for the first run of the game.

Jack had a great at-bat in his second plate appearance. Falling behind in the count 1 and 2, Jack fouled off three straight pitches. After checking his swing to take a ball on the sixth pitch, he hit a hard ground ball up the middle for a single. Jack went to second on a balk, but ended the inning there after Jordan and Nick flied out to left field.

In his third at-bat, Jack struck out looking on 1 and 2 pitch that was very inside. We saw this umpire earlier in the season at the Ponderosa game. He has a very inconsistent strike zone. Neither set of parents were very happy with the way that he was calling balls and strikes.

Facing Jeremy in the top of the seventh, Jack got ahead in the count 3 and 0. He told me in the car later that once he got ahead 3 and 0 that he was determined not to swing at a pitch. Jack said that he was going to put the pressure on Jeremy to throw strikes. Jeremy came back with two strikes to get the count to 3 and 2. Jack drew a walk on a low inside pitch for ball four. With two outs, Nick grounded a ball right at the shortstop. The coaches had given Jack the steal sign and he got an enormous jump off the pitcher. Jack literally got to second base before the ball got to the shortstop. The shortstop took his eyes off the ball to glance at Jack and then didn't field the ball cleanly. Nick was safe at first on the error. Jared crushed the next pitch into deep right center for a double driving in both Jack and Nick.

Jack played seven innings in left field. He had two put-outs. Ironically, both put-outs were on balls hit by Jeremy: a high fly ball and a sinking line drive.

The Marauders gave up two unearned runs: one in the second on successive errors by the second baseman and third baseman and one in the fifth that tied that game on an ugly error by the right fielder and that was compounded by another error by the second baseman. With the scored tied 2 to 2 in the top of the sixth and two outs, Alex hit a line drive into left field to score Jared. The Marauders added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh when Jack and Nick scored on Jared's double. The Marauders won the game by the score of 5 to 2. The box score is here and the scorecard is here.

Chiappe (5 - 0, ERA 1.77, 6 starts, 31.2 innings) was the winning pitcher. Wolger closed out the game. Neither pitcher pitched against Christian Brothers in the first game.

The Jesuit Frosh baseball team now has 17 wins and 5 losses. In league, they have 10 wins and 1 loss. The game log is here. The Marauders next game is Monday, April 29 at home against Casa Roble. It is hard to believe, but there is just a little over a week left in the season.

Jesuit Frosh baseball versus Bella Vista

The Jesuit Marauders frosh baseball team played their 21st game of the season against the Bella Vista Broncos. The Marauders beat the Broncos by the score of 3 to 2 on April 3.

Jack lead off and started in centerfield.

At the plate, Jack was 1 for 2 with a single, a walk, a stolen base, an RBI and two runs scored. In his first at-bat, he golfed a 1 and 1 pitch off the end of the bat for a high fly ball into centerfield and an out. With the score tied at 1 to 1 in the bottom of the second inning and two out, Jack drove the first pitch into left center for a single and an RBI. With two outs, the runners were moving. Wolger scored from second and Jacobi went from first to third. Jack stole second and then scored on Jordan's line drive to right center. With two outs in the bottom of the third, in his third at-bat, he ran the count to 3 and 2 and drew a walk. Jack went to second on Jordan's single through the left side and scored on Nick's single into right. Although the throw was offline, he made a wild slide to the left side of the plate and reached out and touched the plate as he went by.

Jack played four innings in centerfield. He had one put-out.

The Marauders rolled over the Broncos and won by the score of 14 to 4. The box score is here and the scorecard is here.

Abercrombie (1 - 0, ERA 5.79, 1 start, 4 appearances, 9.2 innings) was the winning pitcher.

The Jesuit Frosh baseball team now has 16 wins and 5 losses. In league, they have 9 wins and 1 loss. The game log is here. The Marauders next game is Saturday, April 27 at Christian Brothers.

Jesuit Frosh baseball versus Del Campo

The Jesuit Marauders played the Del Campo Cougars in their 20th game of the season. This is the first time they have faced Del Campo; the first game was rained out.

Over the last couple of weeks, Jack has played against the tougher teams. The coach has played a line-up of players who are further down on the depth chart against clearly weaker teams. I think that this has hurt Jack somewhat; he has not had a chance to get his swing going against weaker competition. He has also not had a chance to pad his statistics in the blow-outs...

Jack started in centerfield and led off against Del Campo.

He was 1 for 1 with a walk, a double and a run scored. In his first at-bat, Jack walked on six pitches. He went to second on Sam's walk, to third on Nick's fielder's choice and scored on Kyle's single. Jack drove a 0 and 1 pitch into right center for a double in his second plate appearance. He was thrown out trying to steal third.

In the field, Jack played two innings in centerfield. He didn't have an assist or a put-out.

The Marauders jumped all over the Cougars. They scored 8 runs in both the third and fourth innings and 7 runs in the fifth inning. There is a 10 run rule in place, but only after 5 innings. Scoring in five straight innings, the Marauders won by the score of 30 to 0. The score box is here and the score card is here.

Jacobi ( 1 - 1, ERA 0.88, 1 start, 3 appearances) was the winning pitcher. Beards pitched the fifth inning.

Unpacking the car when we got home, Jack turned to me and said "how can they be so bad?" I talked to the coach a little before the St. Mary's game on Saturday about how appalled I was with the level of some of the competition. He acknowledged that the competition was probably a little worse than most previous years. The Marauders have 10 runned 5 of their last 7 opponents.

The Jesuit Frosh baseball team now has 15 wins and 5 losses. In league, they have 8 wins and 1 loss. The game log is here. The Marauders next game is Wednesday, April 24 at home against Bella Vista.

Jesuit Frosh Baseball versus St. Mary's

The Jesuit Marauders Frosh baseball team played their 19th game of the season against the St. Mary's Rams. The Marauders had beat the Rams twice already this year: 10 to 3 on March 12 and 10 to 5 on March 19.

Jack started the game in centerfield and led off. He has been struggling the last couple of games and unfortunately had his worst game of the season at the plate.

At the plate, Jack was 0 for 4. In his first at-bat, he ran the count to 3 and 2, fouled off two pitches and struck out looking on a nasty curve ball. Jack fell behind in the count 1 and 2 in his second plate appearance. He fouled off two pitches, took two balls and then struck out swinging on a high fast ball. Jack said after the game that he has been swinging too hard and trying to kill the ball. In his third at-bat, Jack grounded a 1 and 0 pitch back to the pitcher and was thrown out at first. He grounded a 2 and 2 pitch back to the pitcher in this fourth plate appearance and was thrown out at first. Over the course of the four at-bats, Jack fouled off seven pitches.

Jack continues to play solidly in the field. He played seven innings in centerfield. Jack had three put-outs on fly balls to center and left center.

The Marauders jumped out to a 3 to 0 lead in the top of the first, but never scored again. Leading 3 to 2 after four innings, they gave up 2 runs in the bottom of the fifth and 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Marauders lost the game to the Rams by the score of 7 to 3. The box score is here and the scorecard is here.

Iwasa was the starting pitcher; he left the game in the fourth inning. Wolger (3 - 1, ERA 5.31, 7 starts, 1 appearance) was the losing pitcher.

The Jesuit Frosh baseball team now has 14 wins and 5 losses. In league, they have 7 wins and 1 loss. The game log is here. The Marauders next game is Monday, April 22 at Del Campo. This will be there first game against Del Campo this season; the first game was rained out.

Jesuit Frosh Baseball versus Vista Del Lago

The Jesuit Frosh Marauders baseball team played their 18th game of the season against the Vista Del Lago Eagles. They beat Vista Del Lago by the score of 16 to 6 on March 22.

Jack didn't start. He entered the game in the fifth inning and played centerfield.

Jack got one at-bat. He hit a 2 and 1 pitch into the hole on the left side. Hustling up the line, he beat the throw by more than a step and a half. The umpire called him out!?! With Jack struggling at the plate over the last couple of games, this put me into a black mood; he needs something to get him jump started.

At the time, Jesuit was winning by the score of 16 to 1. Four of the last five games, Jesuit has ten runned the other team. One of the things that we have been seeing in the games where the other team is getting blown out is that the umpire starts to make some questionable calls. They will create an absurdly large strike zone and give the other team any close plays, but I have never seen a call where the player was safe by a large margin and he was called out. Talking to a large group of the parents on Saturday, Jared's dad suggested that I give him the hit.

In the field, Jack played an inning in centerfield. He didn't have a put-out or an assist.

The Jesuit Marauders scored 14 runs in the third inning and cruised to a 16 to 1 win in five innings. The box score is here and the scorecard is here.

Chiappe (4 - 0, ERA 2.15, 5 starts) was the winning pitcher.

The Jesuit Frosh baseball team now has 14 wins and 4 losses. In league, they have 7 wins and 1 loss. The game log is here. The Marauders next game is Saturday, May 20 at St Mary's in Stockton. They beat St Mary's twice already this season.

ESPN Films 30 for 30 Shorts: The Irrelevant Giant

Grantland and ESPN Films have released the eighth film in their 30 for 30 documentary short series.

30 for 30 Shorts: The Irrelevant Giant

In 1983 the New York Giants were a team in flux. Rookie coach Bill Parcells was hired to rebuild the once-prominent franchise. One of the resources at his disposal was the last pick in the 1983 NFL draft — a pick commonly known as "Mr. Irrelevant." That year Parcells's staff chose John Tuggle, a running back out of Cal, who would not only defy the odds and make the team, but also change the lives of both player and coach.

Virtually Biking Across America - Day 55

On Day 55, I rode 20.2 miles southeast across Wyoming. Starting from Fort Laramie, I followed Highway 26. This was a fast, very straight, slightly downhill ride. I ended the day in Torrington at the junction of Highway 26 and Highway 85. The Cold Springs Pony Express Station is about one mile southeast of town [N42 01 55.0 W104 09 03.0].

Jesuit Frosh Baseball versus Oakmont

The Jesuit Freshman baseball team played its seventeenth game of the season against the Oakmont Vikings. Although it sounds very harsh, Oakmont was a bad team. Their pitching was poor at best and the quality of their fielding, particularly the outfielders, made me think of the keystone cops... Except for Christian Brothers and Bella Vista, I have been dismayed at the quality of the competition in the league games.

It was raining lightly at the start of the game. They ended up stopping the game for about 20 minutes to work on the mound just about the time that the rain stopped.

Jack started in centerfield and led off.

At the plate, Jack was 1 for 3 with a double, a walk, a RBI and two runs scored. In his first at-bat, he crushed a 1 and 1 pitch for a high fly ball into centerfield for an out. Jack hit a 3 and 1 pitch for a double down the first base line in his second plate appearance. He went to third on an error on Bailey's fly ball to left [a medium fly ball literally landed two feet in front of the outfielder] and scored on Kyle's ground out to the pitcher.

I was surprised to see Jack try to go home on Kyle's infield out. When the pitcher threw to first, Jack broke for home. The catcher went up the first base line to take the throw from first and had to reach back to try and tag Jack. Jack dodged away from him and came back to tag the base.

In his third at-bat, Jack fell behind 2 and 1, fouled off a pitch and then took two balls to draw the walk. He went to second on Bailey's walk, to third on Kyle's single through the right side and scored on Jared's walk. Jack grounded a 2 and 2 pitch to the right side for an out in his fourth plate appearance. With the Oakmont pitchers throwing in the 60 mph range, he said after the game that he was trying too hard to kill the ball.

In the field, Jack played fourth innings in centerfield. He had one put-out on a high fly ball by the first batter to centerfield in the rain.

The Marauders beat up on the Vikings. Scoring 10 runs in the third and 9 runs in the fourth, the Marauders won the game by the score of 25 to 4. Although it was only a 4 1/2 inning game, with the rain delay, it ended up being a long evening. The game took almost three hours. The box score is here and the scorecard is here.

The Jesuit Frosh baseball team now has 13 wins and 4 losses. In league, they have 6 wins and 1 loss. The game log is here. The Marauders next game is Friday, April 19 against Vista del Lago. They will be starting back through the league games and playing the opponents for a second time. They beat Vista del Lago in March.

Jesuit Frosh Baseball versus Ponderosa

The Jesuit Frosh Marauders played the Ponderosa Bruins in their sixteenth game of the season. Based on looking at the rosters, it looks like the Bruins moved four freshman to the JV team. As a result, Ponderosa appears to be one of the weaker teams in the league and is winless.

The coach took the opportunity to play a number of the players who have not had many plate appearances this year. Jack entered the game in centerfield in the bottom of the fifth inning.

At the plate, Jack was 0 for 1. Leading off the top of the sixth, he grounded a 3 and 2 pitch up the middle. The shortstop was playing towards second base, made a nice stop and threw Jack out at first.

In the field, Jack played two innings in centerfield. He did not have a put-out or an assist.

With Jesuit leading 4 to 3 in the top of the fourth, the Marauders chased the starting the pitcher and then scored 9 runs over the next three innings. The coach made the point before the game that other teams are usually throwing their best pitcher against Jesuit. Once they have to replace the starting pitcher, the other teams typically get in trouble.

The Marauders defeated the Bruins by the score of 13 to 3. The scorecard is here and the box score is here.

Iwasa (4 - 1, ERA 3.24, 6 starts) was the winning pitcher. Iwasa pitched five innings; he walked one and struck out two. Ryan was again effective closely the last inning.

The Jesuit Frosh baseball team now has 12 wins and 4 losses. In league, they have 5 wins and 1 loss. The game log is here. The Marauders next game is Monday, April 15 against Oakmont.

The pitching speed samples for the opposing pitchers include:

#21 King - 71 pitches
1st inning: 70-66-68

Pony Express Ferry Oakland

At the summit of Fish Ranch Road Pony Express Rider Thomas Bedford followed today's Claremont, Telegraph and Broadway Streets to the pier located at this site.

Captain Falkenburgh arrived here with the "Oakland" at 9:15 a.m. The telegraph had informed him about Bedford. He waited awhile but then gave the order to "haul in" and "let go." Bedford was then sighted and the plank put out against for the flying horse and Pony Express mail. At 9:32 a.m. Bedford rode on board and arrived in San Francisco at 10:30 a.m.

Bedford's trip from Martinez covered 25.9 miles in 1 hour and 40 minutes. This was an average of 15.5 MPH. This first overland trip between Sacramento and San Francisco on April 23, 1860 covered 98.7 miles, in 9 hours and 45 minutes, by two riders.

Virtually Biking Across America - Day 54

On Day 54, I rode 23.6 miles across Wyoming. Starting from the Cottonwood Pony Express Station [N42 18.834 W 104 53.328], I rode along Wendover Road to Highway 28. Leaving the highway on an unnamed road near Guernsey, I connected with South Guernsey Road to the Sand Point Pony Express Station [(N42 14 51.0 W104 42 20.0]. From there, I headed cross country back to Highway 28. Following Highway 28 for 9 miles, I finished the ride in Fort Laramie.

Jesuit Frosh Baseball versus Oak Ridge

The Jesuit Frosh Marauders baseball team played their fifteenth game of the season against Oak Ridge Trojans. After playing a number of home games, this game and five of the next six games will be played on the road.

Jack started in centerfield and led off. Not making excuses, but he was very under the weather. He fell asleep in the car on the way to the game, slept most of the way home after the game and ended up not going to school the next day...

At the plate, Jack was 0 for 4 with a walk, a steal, a run scored, a RBI and reached on an error. Oddly, he is tied for the lead on the team in reaching on an error. In his first at-bat, Jack grounded a 2 and 2 pitch to the second baseman and was throw out at first. With one out in the third inning and Nick on second, Jack grounded 1 and 1 pitch to the right side in his second plate appearance. The second baseman misplayed the ball, Jack was safe at first on the error and Nick scored from second.

With the Marauders trailing 5 to 3 in the top of the fifth inning, Jack led off the inning with a walk on five pitches in his third at-bat. He stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on the error on Jared's grounder to the left side.

Jack grounded a 1 and 0 pitch to the second baseman and was thrown out at first in his fourth plate appearance. In his fifth at-bat, he popped a 2 and 2 pitch into short right field for the out.

In the field, Jack played 6 1/3 innings in centerfield and 2/3s of an inning in left field. He had three put-outs. Jack made a nice catch on a sinking line drive in right center and handled a couple of hard hit fly balls.

Trailing 5 to 3 in the top of the fifth inning, the Marauders scored 6 runs. The Trojan's starting pitcher ended up throwing 94 pitches before they took him out with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth inning. The Marauders held on to win by the score of 10 to 5. The box score is here and the scorecard is here.

Redmond (2 - 0, ERA 1.24, 3 appearances) was the winning pitcher. Kane pitched the seventh inning. After struggling in recent outings, he was very effective; he threw 9 pitches: 6 strikes and 3 balls.

The Jesuit Frosh baseball team now has 11 wins and 4 losses. In league, they have 4 wins and 1 loss. The game log is here. The Marauders next game is Saturday, April 13 against Ponderosa.

The Trojan's starting pitcher did a nice job of mixing speeds. Unfortunately for him, he just left too many balls up in the strike zone over the plate. The pitching speed samples from the game include:

Simmons Podcast with Jonathan Hock about Survive and Advance

I listened to a Bill Simmon's podcast with Jonathan Hock, the director of the 30 for 30 film about the legendary 1983 NC State men's basketball team, Survive and Advance. This is a nice supplement to a very good film. My write-up on the film is here.

At about the 35:00 minute mark in the podcast, they talk about the next 30 for 30 volume 2 film that Hock is working it. It is about the 1980 Soviet hockey, the team that lost to the American's in Lake Placid in the Miracle on Ice. It will air next February during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Jesuit Frosh Marauders versus Casa Roble

The Jesuit Frosh Marauders played its fourteenth game of the season against the Casa Roble Rams. There was a player on the Rams--Domonic Washington--who played with Jack on the LYB Angels in 2010.

After starting for three straight games, Jack got most of the night off. He ended up entering the game in the fifth inning as the designated hitter for Jared.

At plate, Jack was 1 for 1 with a single, a walk, a stolen base and two runs scored. Coming to bat in the top of the sixth with the scored tied 6 to 6, Jack had a great at-bat. He fell behind 1 and 2 in the count, fouled off two pitches in a row, took the sixth and seventh pitches for balls and then lined an inside pitch for a single up the middle. Jack went to second on Alex's soft flyball to right, to third on Jordan's soft flyball to left center and then scored on Jonah's soft flyball to right. With the Rams pitching collapsing, Jack came to bat again in the sixth inning. He ran the count to 3 and 2 and drew a walk. Jack stole second and then scored on Jordan's home run to right center. Jordan's bat has started to come alive in the last ten days.

Jack did not play in the field.

Trailing 6 to 0, the Rams scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the score. The Marauders turned around and scored 10 runs in the top of the sixth. After holding the Rams in the bottom of the sixth, the Marauders won by the 10 run rule. The score was Jesuit 16, Casa Roble 6. The box score is here. The scorecard is here.

Colombara (1-1, ERA 2.74, 4 appearances) was the winning pitcher. This is the fourth game of the season that Wolger started, but did not get a decision.

The Jesuit Frosh baseball team now has 10 wins and 4 losses. In league, they have 3 wins and 1 loss. The game log is here. The Marauders next game is Wednesday, April 10 against Oak Ridge.

The starting pitcher for Casa Roble did a serviceable job, half of the six runs that Jesuit scored in the first five innings were unearned. The pitching speed samples from the game include:

Mad Men Season Six, Episode One and Two

Sharon and I started watching Mad Men late last fall and worked our way through all five of the seasons. We watched the last episode of season five on Friday night.

With season six premiering, we hosted a small Mad Men party. The group included her brother Tom, his wife Becky and Jim.

Sharon made a great pot roast for dinner.

In an interesting twist, the show opens in one of the hotels where we are going to be on vacation in June...

Jesuit Frosh Baseball versus Christian Brothers

I had this date circled on the calendar since Jack made the team. The Jesuit frosh Marauders baseball team played the Christian Brothers Falcons. Jeremy is on the Falcons, as well as Anthony and Marcus who went to SEAS with Jack. It was probably the most boisterous youth baseball game that I have ever attended. The parents and the kids were loud for the whole game.

Jack started in centerfield and lead off.

At the plate, Jack was 3 for 4 with a double, two singles, two runs scored and a RBI. In his first at-bat, Jack struck out swinging on a 2 and 2 curve ball. He crushed a 0 and 2 pitch over the head of the centerfielder for a double in his second plate appearance. Jack said after the game that he was surprised that the pitcher threw him a high fastball with two strikes. He went to third on Bailey's grounder to the right side (an error) and scored on Nick's ground out. In his third at-bat against Jeremy, Jack hit a 3 and 2 pitch for a hard line drive up the middle. The shortstop made a nice try, but it nicked off his glove. He went to second on Bailey's single through the left side.

The next play was really a microcosm of why Jack has been earning playing time. Nick hit a 3 and 2 pitch for a sharp grounder right at the third baseman. The third baseman was playing a couple of steps behind the base and Jack got a good jump off of second. When the third baseman bobbled the ball, Jack was able to beat him to the base. He scored from third on Jared's sacrifice fly down the first base line. Jack said after the game that he would never have been playing that far back at third base.

Jack's fourth plate appearance was a second example of why he has been earning playing time. Jack hit a 1 and 0 pitch for a grounder deep into the hole on the left side. The shortstop made a nice backhand stop. Jack got a good jump out of the box, hustled down the line, and beat the throw. Sogard never stopped running from second and scored. Jack ended the inning at first when Bailey hit a soft line drive to the second baseman.

Jack played seven innings in centerfield. For the second straight game, he did not have a put-out or an assist. Jack made a diving attempt on a soft fly ball in left center and had another ball crushed over his head. He made a nice throw on the one over his head and almost got the runner at second.

Christian Brothers scored in each of the first five innings. Jesuit kept trying to claw back into the game. The Falcon led by the score of 8 to 6 after five innings; 4 of their 8 runs were unearned. On the strength of Jack's RBI, Jesuit closed the score to 8 to 7 in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Marauders relief pitchers couldn't hold the Falcons in the top of the 7th giving up 3 earned runs. Undone by five errors and ineffective relief pitching, the Marauders lost the game by the score of 11 to 8. The box score is here and the scorecard is here.

The losing pitcher was Iwasa (3-1, ERA 3.59, 5 Starts). Kane's struggles as a relief pitcher continue; he has an earned run average of 19.1 in four appearances.

I got texts from several people saying that they couldn't believe that the boys lost to Christian Brothers... I am looking forward to the rematch on Saturday, April 26.

The Jesuit Frosh baseball team now has 9 wins and 4 losses. In league, they have 2 wins and 1 loss. The game log is here. The Marauders next game is Monday, April 8 against Casa Roble.

Mad Men - Season Five

Friday night before the start of season 6, Sharon and I finished watching Season 5 of Mad Men. This season takes place between Memorial Day, May 30, 1966 and spring 1967.

The season explores Don Draper's new marriage to Megan. It leads him to ignore his work at the Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce advertising agency.

The season touches on race relations and drug use, particularly LSD. There a number of pop culture references, including Star Trek, Dark Shadows, Hare Krishnas and the Rolling Stones.

It also seemed like there were product references, including Heinz, Jaguar, Manischewitz and Mohawk Airlines (which ends up being part of USAir).

Sacramento Area High School Baseball

Screen Shot 2013-04-02 at 9.46.00 PMI am still having a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that almost everyone that Jack has played baseball and other sports with over the last five years is playing high school baseball on at least a junior varsity team somewhere: Trevor with Franklin JV; Patrick with Sheldon JV; Greyson with Consumes Oaks JV; Aaron with Elk Grove JV; and Josh with Laguna Creek JV; JJ with Rio Linda JV; Connor with the Folsom Varsity; Joe with Christian Brothers Varsity, and; Niko with the Laguna Creek Varsity.

Jack and I were talking in the car in the last week and he was emphatic that none of the other frosh players could make Jesuit JV team. While some of that is hyperbole, it has made me wonder about the relative strengths of the programs at the different schools. I know that Jack stacks up favorably against all of these other boys. Yet while all of them were making their JV and varsity teams, I was honestly anxious that he would even make the Jesuit freshman baseball team.

For almost two years, I have heard horror stories about how hard it would be to make the Jesuit freshman baseball team. I have heard repeatedly that it is the hardest team sport at the school to make. Jack's experience with the try-outs validates those stories. To have a chance to make the team, a kid really has to have played a lot of baseball; Jack probably played 250 tournament games in the last four years.

I then glanced at the high school baseball team rankings in the Sacramento Bee this week. Elk Grove was ranked #1 and Jesuit was ranked #2. In the Maxpreps Northern California rankings, Elk Grove is ranked fourth and Jesuit is ranked sixth.

Elk Grove is a very good and competitive program, but it is somewhat of a “who you know” program [you really need to come up through the Longhorns]. I have come to the conclusion that Jesuit may be the hardest high school baseball program in the Sacramento area to break into. Obviously, this varies from year to year.

One footnote. While Sharon and I were walking around before dinner at the PACE dinner and auction, we bumped into one of the parents who is on the Booster Club Board with Sharon. We mentioned that Jack had made the freshman baseball team; his son had not. The look that came over his face was interesting: a frown and then a glare. He acted like he was mad at us for Jack making the team, while his son did not...

Rancho Cordova Pony Express Marker

Of all the historical markers that I have stumbled across in the last few years, this one may have surprised me the most. It is about two miles from my work. I would never have expected to find a Pony Express Marker at this location...

Jesuit Frosh Baseball versus Bella Vista

After getting rained out on Monday, The Jesuit Frosh Marauders played the Bella Vista Broncos in their second league game of the year. The Marauders beat up on the Broncos in a scrimmage early in March before Jesuit had made their final cuts.

Jack started the game in centerfield and was the lead off batter.

At the plate, Jack was 1 for 3 with a double, a walk, a fielders choice, a steal and two runs scored. In his first at-bat leading off the game in the top of the first, he walked on six pitches. Jack stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored the first run of the game on Christian's single to center. With runners on first and second with no outs in the top of the third, Jack grounded a 0 and 1 pitch to the left side in his second plate appearance. The shortstop threw to third to force out Trevor. Jack went to second on Christian's walk, to third on Nick's walk and scored on Jared's sacrifice fly to left. In his third at-bat, Jack crushed a 1 and 1 pitch over the right fielder's head for a double. Unfortunately, he ended the inning there when Christian flew out to left and Jared struck out. Jack struck out swinging on a 2 and 2 pitch in his fourth plate appearance. He chased a high pitch and said after the game that he was being too aggressive.

In the field, Jack played seven innings in centerfield. He had no put-outs or assists. Bella Vista only hit three balls out of the infield: a fly ball out to right field, a blooper hit to right over the outfielder's head who was playing very, very shallow and a blooper hit in short left center.

Jesuit scored three times in the first three innings and held on to win by the score of 3 to 2. The game shouldn't have been that close. Both of the Bella Vista runs were unearned. The Marauders had four errors, including two more errors at third base. The box score is here and the scorecard is here.

Wolger (2-0, ERA 3.39, 5 starts) was the winning pitcher. Fitzsimon pitched the seventh inning and got the save; this is the first appearance that Fitzsimon has made this year.

The Bella Vista pitcher was not one of the players that the Marauders faced in the earlier scrimmage. Throwing in the high 60's and mixing in some off speed pitches, he was effective at keeping Jesuit hitters off balance. The pitching speed samples from the game include:

#34 Fitzpatrick
1st inning - 57-67-66
3rd inning - 66-68
4th inning - 68-68-68
5th inning - 66-67

#33 Holmgren
6th inning - 60-60

The Jesuit Frosh baseball team now has 9 wins and 3 losses. In league, they have 2 win and 0 losses. The game log is here. The Marauders next game is Saturday, April 6 against Christian Brothers. The Christian Brothers team includes Jeremy who Jack played with off and on over the last six years and Anthony and Marcus who were in Jack's class at SEAS.

Virtually Biking Across America - Day 53

On Day 53, I rode 24.7 miles across Wyoming. Starting near the Elk Horn Pony Express Station, I continued on Elkhorn Creek Road to Highway 319 (South Glendo Highway). I rode 15 miles south through Glendo and past the Horseshoe Creek Pony Express Station [N42 28 17.0 W105 01 38.0]. Exiting on Cassa Road, I headed cross country to Wendover Road. I stopped at the Cottonwood Pony Express Station [N42 18.834 W 104 53.328].
