Jesuit JV baseball versus Pleasant Grove

AD, Cooper, Jordan and Jack

AD, Cooper and Jack played together on the Gunners team that went to Cooperstown in 2009.

AD, Cooper, Jordan and Jack played together on the Outlaws in the fall of 2009 and the spring of 2010.

The Jesuits Marauders JV baseball team played the second game of a three game series against the Pleasant Grove Eagles. The Marauders beat the Eagles twice by the scores of 6 to 2 and 4 to 0 in a non-league doubleheader earlier in the season and by the score of 3 to 1 in the first game of the series on Monday.

Leading off, Jack was 1 for 4 with a single and an RBI. In his first at-bat, he ran the count to 3 and 2, fouled off a pitch and then struck out swinging. Coming up again in the bottom of the first inning, Jack hit a 0 and 1 pitch for a high fly ball to right for an out in his second plate appearance. In his third at-bat, he crushed a 0 and 2 pitch into left center for a hard line drive right at the centerfielder for an out. I am still more than a little confused about why the centerfielder was so far towards left center. Jack hit a 0 and 1 pitch for a hard grounder through the left side for single in his fourth plate appearance. He drove in Christian for an RBI.

Playing centerfield for seven innings, Jack had one put-out. The coaches have really shortened the rotation for these last few games. Only Cooper and Christian have been worked into the defense rotation.

On the strength of a two walks, a hit batter, four singles and Kyle's triple, the Marauders jumped on the Eagles in the bottom of the first and scored 7 runs. The Marauders ended up winning the game by the score of 11 to 1 in six innings. The box score is here and the scorecard is here.

Cosca (5-0, 7 starts, 28.67 innings, ERA 1.71) was the winning pitcher. He struck out six in four innings.

The Jesuit JV baseball team now has 20 wins and 4 losses. Their league record is 10 wins and 1 loss. The game log is here.

Jesuit JV baseball versus Sheldon

The Jesuit Marauders JV baseball team played the Sheldon Huskies at Jesuit High School. This was a make-up of a rain-out last Friday night. The Marauders beat the Huskies by the scores of 12 to 2 and 13 to 12 last week.

Working in Sonora, I watched the Gamecast while Rod scored.

Leading off, Jack was 0 for 1 with three walks. Talking to Rod at Monday night's game, I had noted that Jack hadn't walked as much this year! Although he walked three times, he never scored!?! In his first at-bat, Jack grounded a 3 and 2 pitch to the shortstop and was thrown out at first. Jack walked on four pitches in his second plate appearance. Breaking for second, he got tagged out on a 1-3-6 pick off. In his third at-bat, Jack walked on five pitches. He went to second when Iwasa was hit by a pitch, but ended headed the inning there when Cosca struck out looking. Jack walked on four pitches in his fourth plate appearance to lead off the bottom of the sixth. He went from first to third on Iwasa's single to left. With no outs, the Marauders couldn't get him home. Cosca flew out to short left field, Alex struck out swinging and Jared struck out looking.

Playing centerfield, Jack had one put-out.

With the starting pitcher struggling to find the plate, the Marauders fell behind 3 to 0 in the top of the second. Bringing in a new pitcher and then plating runs in the next four innings, the Marauders beat the Huskies by the score of 5 to 3. The box score is here and the scorecard is here.

Beards (2-0, 1 save, 2 starts, 6 appearances, 20.00 innings, ERA 1.75) was the winning pitcher. He struck out nine in 5 1/3 innings, while walking only one batter.

The Jesuit JV baseball team now has 19 wins and 4 losses. Their league record is 9 wins and 1 loss. The game log is here.

Jesuit JV baseball versus Pleasant Grove

The Jesuit Marauders JV baseball team played the Pleasant Grove Eagles at Pleasant Grove High School. The Marauders beat the Eagles twice by the scores of 6 to 2 and 4 to 0 in a non-league doubleheader earlier in the season. They play a three game league series this week. It is hard for me to believe that you can beat a team five times in one season.

Leading off, Jack was 2 for 4 with two singles and a stolen base. In his first at-bat, he hit a 0 and 2 pitch for a grounder to the pitcher and was thrown out at first. Jack hit a 1 and 2 pitch for a line drive into right field for a single in his second plate appearance. It was a nice piece of two strike hitting. He stole second. Cosca hit a grounder to the shortstop that the shortstop had a little trouble finding the handle. With Jack going to third, the shortstop threw to the third baseman. Jack was safe, but over slide the bag and was tagged out as he tried to reach back. I don't think that I have seen him over slide a bag in the last two years. In his third at-bat, Jack grounded a 1 and 1 pitch to the shortstop and was thrown out at first. With Child on first and no outs at the top of the seventh inning, the coach asked Jack to sacrifice bunt. He fouled off the first pitch. The coach then changed the sign to a hit and run. Jack faked the bunt, pulled back the bat and slapped one through the right side. He said in the car on the way home that it was the perfect hit and run [even if Child didn't know the signs…]. Jack went to second on Cosca's sacrifice bunt, but ended the inning there when Christian struck out and Iwasa flied out to center.

Playing centerfield, Jack had two put-outs. There was a stiff wind blowing from right to left in the outfield and it was holding up most of the fly balls.

The Marauders scored three runs in the top of the third [the inning that Jack over slide third!]. Behind solid pitching, the Marauders made the runs hold up. The Marauders won the game by the score of 3 to 1. The box score is here and the scorecard is here.

Kane (4-0, 2 starts, 7 appearances, 22.33 innings, ERA 2.82) was the winning pitcher. Child (2-1, 1 save, 0 starts, 10 appearances, 17.67 innings, ERA 3.57) pitched the sixth and seventh inning and got the save.

The Jesuit JV baseball team now has 18 wins and 4 losses. Their league record is 8 wins and 1 loss. The game log is here.

It is going to be long week. The Marauders will make up a rain out against Sheldon on Tuesday and then play Pleasant Grove on Wednesday and Friday nights. I think that this was supposed to be Pleasant Grove's best pitcher. I am interested to see who throws for Pleasant Grove on Wednesday and Friday.

As a side note, Jordan caught for Pleasant Grove. He and Jack played together for a number of years on the Outlaws. Although he caught the whole game, the team DHed for him.

Sue Moore

As part of our annual pilgrimage to Arizona for Spring Training, we spend time with Doug and Sue Moore. Doug is part of the extended group that played Rugby together in college and have stayed friends for more than 35 years. Sue passed away unexpectedly this week.

Moore, Susan G. 60, of Phoenix, AZ passed away on April 21, 2014. Sue was an avid reader, crafter and traveler. She put together the world's best Christmas stockings and never turned down a good cup of coffee. She was the first to offer a helping hand to those she loved. Her greatest joy was her family, especially her brand new granddaughter. Sue is survived by her parents, Virgil and Mary Grenewetzki, her husband, Douglas Moore, her children, Jennifer, Kelley and Peter, and her granddaughter, Beatrice. Services will be held today, April 25, 2014 at 2:00pm at Life in Christ Lutheran Church:14802 N. 75th Ave. Peoria, AZ 85381. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Multiple Myeloma Foundation in Sue's name at www.theMMRF.org. Sue's husband, Doug, is a survivor of Multiple Myeloma.

Jesuit JV baseball versus De La Salle

The Jesuit Marauders JV baseball team traveled to Concord to play a doubleheader against the De La Salle Spartans. The Marauders beat the Spartans by the scores of 7 to 3 and 15 to 3 last season. I believe that De La Salle actually had two different freshman teams last year.

Leading off in the first game, Jack was 1 for 4 with a double. In his first at-bat to start the game, he hit a 2 and 2 pitch for a hard grounder down the first base line for a double. Jack went to third on a balk during Alex's at-bat. Unbelievably, they were not able to get him home. With Alex and Nick walking to load the bases, Kyle, Sam and Ryan struck out to end the inning. Jack crushed a 0 and 1 pitch to left center in his second plate appearance. When it left the bat, I was sure that it was at least a double. The wind held the ball up and the centerfield made a nice running catch for the out. In his third at-bat, Jack grounded a 1 and 2 pitch to the first baseman for an out. The umpire was calling a very low outside strike. With Jack falling behind 1 and 2 again on a pair of low outside strikes, he hit a high pop fly to the right side that the first baseman caught for an out.

Playing centerfield, Jack had two put-outs and an assist. Fielding a line drive in left center, Jack threw to third base to get a runner that was trying to advance from first to third.

The Marauders only managed four hits. Jack's double plus singles by Alex and Cosca. Sogard had an infield single off the pitcher. Compounding the problems by giving up a couple of unearned runs, the Marauders lost the game by the score of 7 to 1. The box score is here and the scorecard is here.

Wolger (2-2, 7 starts, 1 appearance, 28.67 innings, 2.93 ERA) was the losing pitcher.

Leading off in the second game, Jack was 1 for 4 with a single, a stolen base, a run scored and an RBI. In his first at-bat, he grounded a 2 and 2 pitch right back at the pitcher. The pitcher made a nice stab to keep the ball from going up the middle and threw Jack out at first. Jack grounded a 1 and 1 pitch through the right side for a single in his second plate appearance to lead off the fourth inning. He stole second, went to third on Cosca's single and scored on Iwasa's single. Coming to bat a second time in the fourth inning, Jack grounded a 3 and 1 pitch to the shortstop to drive in Jonah for the RBI and was thrown out at first. In his third at-bat, Jack grounded a 3 and 1 pitch to the shortstop and was thrown out at first. Jack hit a 1 and 2 pitch for a grounder to the shortstop in his fourth plate appearance and was thrown out at first.

Playing centerfield, Jack did not have a put-out or an assist.

Leading 7 to 3 in the bottom of the fourth, the Marauders failed to hold the lead. An untimely error, a walk and a hit batter all combined to let the lead slip away. The Marauders lost the game by the score of 9 to 8. The box score is here and the scorecard is here.

Colombara (1-1, 1 start, 2 appearances, 7.33 innings, 5.73 ERA) was the losing pitcher.

The Jesuit JV baseball team now has 17 wins and 4 losses. Their league record is 7 wins and 1 loss. The game log is here. The high school regular seasons end on May 7. Over the next week and a half, the Marauders have seven games: a three game series with Pleasant Grove, a rain-out make up game against Sheldon and a three game series against Oak Ridge. It is going to be interesting to see how the pitching holds up…

Jesuit JV Baseball versus Sheldon

The Jesuit Marauders JV baseball team played the Sheldon Huskies in the second game of a three games series at Sheldon High School.

Leading off, Jack was 1 for 3 with a single and two RBIs. In his first at-bat, he hit a 1 and 1 pitch for a soft grounder to the right side and was called out at first. The second baseman's throw was high and I swear that the first baseman's foot was several inches off the bag… Coming up for a second time in the top of the first, Jack hit a 2 and 0 pitch for a grounder through the left side to drive in Chiappe and Sogard. He ended the inning there when Iwasa flied out to right. In his third at-bat, Jack crushed a 1 and 0 pitch for a line drive. The second baseman made a nice leaping catch for the out. Jack said after the game that it was one of the balls that he has hit the hardest all season.

Playing centerfield for fourth innings, Jack did not have an assist or a put-out. There were several hard hit balls to right and left center that he fielded. In the bottom of the fourth, a ball was hit to deep centerfield. Jack set up under the ball to make the catch, but it carried over his head for a triple. I have debated back and forth about scoring it as an error. With the wind blowing out, the ball sailed on him. At this point, I have not scored it as an error in the season statistics.

Jack pulled himself out of the game complaining of a migraine headache after the fourth inning.

Scoring 7 runs in the top of the first, the Marauders couldn't hold the lead. The Huskies tied the score at 11 to 11 in the bottom of the fifth. It seemed like it was going to be a repeat of the Folsom game that they lost; whoever batted last was going to win. After a scoreless sixth inning, the Marauders scored two runs in the top of the seventh and then held on to win by the score of 13 to 12. The box score is here and the scorecard is here.

Child (2-1, 0 starts, 8 appearances, 14.67 innings, ERA 3.34) was the winning pitcher. He pitched the sixth and seventh innings.

The Jesuit JV baseball team now has 17 wins and 2 losses. Their league record is 7 wins and 1 loss. The game log is here. The Marauders will play Sheldon again on Friday, a double header against De La Salle on Saturday and then a three game series against Pleasant Grove next week.

Jesuit JV baseball versus Sheldon

The Jesuit Marauders JV baseball team played the Sheldon Huskies. There is one player on the Huskies that Jack played with on the Outlaws: Chance. Traveling for work, Rod scored the game and I watched the gamecast.

Leading off, Jack was 2 for 3 with two singles and a run scored. In his first at-bat, he grounded a 1 and 2 pitch through the right side for a single. Jack went to second when Nick walked, to third on Alex's double play ball to the shortstop and scored on Sam's single to left field. He grounded a 2 and 2 pitch to the first base for an out in his second plate appearance. In his third at-bat, Jack lined a 0 and 1 pitch into left field for a single. He went to second on Nick's single, but the inning ended on Alex's double play ball to short.

Playing centerfield for four innings, Jack had one put-out. He is the only player on the team that has only played one position-centerfield--so far this season.

The Marauders jumped all over the Huskies. They had 18 hits; seven players had a multiple hit game. The Marauders won the game by the score of 12 to 2 in six innings. The box score is here and the scorecard is here.

Stiltner (3-0, 1 Save, 3 starts, 3 appearances, ERA 1.21) was the winning pitcher. He pitched a complete game.

The Jesuit JV baseball team now has 16 wins and 2 losses. Their league record is 6 wins and 1 loss. The game log is here. The Marauders will play Sheldon again on Wednesday and Friday.

Easter 2014

EasterSharon, Jack and I went to the 7:30 am Easter Mass at St. Ignatuis. Although we didn't plan it, Tom ended up sitting with us. We spent the rest of the day getting the house cleaned up and the Easter Dinner prepared.

With Kevin in an afternoon play, we had a late Easter dinner. The Toms showed up about 4:30 pm with Kevin's group finally showing up about 5:15 pm. It was a big group that included: Tom, Becky, Kevin, Kevin's fiancee, her parents, Tim, Kathy, Jim, Sharon, Jack and I. Janie also stopped by for a drink, but didn't stay for dinner.

Sharon made a great dinner of ham, leg of lamb, green beans, potatoes and jello salad. I cooked the leg of lamb on the rotisserie. We had the lamb cake that Tom brought for dessert.

California Historical Landmark #395

In 1850 this community was alive with gold miners. James D. Fair, after whom the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco is named, was one of the most notable. The Mississippi House, built in 1850, contains many relics including the original bar and post office with its grill and mailboxes. On a nearby hill stands the old bell, given by miners, which summoned men to work and announced the convening of various courts. The Wolf of Wall Street

Sharon and I watched The Wolf of Wall Street as an HD rental on the AppleTV. The movie is based on based on Jordan Belfort's memoir of the same name. The film was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for Scorsese, Best Adapted Screenplay for Terrence Winter, and Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor for DiCaprio and Hill, respectively, but failed to win in any category.

This is the eighth of the nine movies nominated for this year's Best Picture that we seen, including NebraskaPhilomena, 12 Year A Slave, Dallas Buyers Club, Captain Phillips, Gravity and American Hustle.

Although three hours long, the movie was better than I expected. I felt like it jumped the shark in a couple of places, but reading a little about Belfort's life, those sections might be more realistic than I can imagine.

2014 Kings versus Suns

Kings versus Suns

After the Marauders' doubleheader baseball game against Davis, Sharon, Jack, Jack's girlfriend and I went to the Sacramento Kings versus Phoenix Suns NBA basketball game. The Suns outscored the Kings 33 to 25 in the fourth quarter and won the game by the score of 104 to 99. It was the first Kings game that Jack's girlfriend ever attended.

With DeMarcus Cousins suspended for too many technical fouls, the Kings were led by Ben McLemore. McLemore had 31 points on 9 for 20 from the field, 3 for 9 from three point range and 10 for 15 from the free throw line.

Much to Jack's chagrin, the Suns were eliminated from the play-offs on Monday night. The Suns finished the season with 48 wins. Only the Suns and Golden State (2007-08) have won 48 games and failed to make the playoffs since the NBA went to the 16-team playoff format.

With Goran Dragic sitting with a sore left ankle, the Suns were led by rookie Archie Goodwin. Goodwin had 29 points on 11 for 13 from the field, 1 for 3 from three point range and 6 for 7 from the free throw line. Goodwin had 12 points in the fourth quarter.

I frankly don't enjoy watching the Kings are this point; it is just not a very good team. The Kings (28-53) matched their win total from last year and failed to make the playoffs for an eighth straight season.

Sharon and I spent half time visiting with Hunter, Yuli, Snipes, Larkin and the Laskins.

Jesuit JV baseball versus Davis

After playing a doubleheader against Pleasant Grove on Tuesday, the Jesuit Marauders JV baseball team played a doubleheader against the Davis Blue Devils at Jesuit High School. Davis played a double header against Pleasant Grove on Monday. The Marauders beat the Blue Devils last year by the score of 6 to 0 and earlier this year at Raley Field by the score of 5 to 4.

Leading off in the first game, Jack was 1 for 4 with a stolen base and a run scored. In his first at-bat, Jack hit a 2 and 2 pitch for a hard grounder up the middle for a single. He went to second on Cosca's walk. Jack stole third when the pitcher tried to pick him off second, but he beat the relay throw to third. Jack scored on Sam's single to left. Running the count to 2 and 2 and then fouling off a pitch, Jack struck out looking in his second plate appearance. In his third at-bat, Jack struck out looking again on a 2 and 2 pitch. Jack struck out swinging on the seventh pitch of his fourth plate appearance on a curve ball. He hit a shot down the third base line that was just foul on the sixth pitch of the at-bat.

Playing centerfield for seven innings, Jack had four put-outs.

With the Marauders trailing by the score of 3 to 2 in the bottom of the sixth, the Marauders scored three runs on Kyle's lead-off triple, Bryce's single, Kevin's walk, Sogard's sacrifice bunt and Cosca's single. Sam came in to pitch the seventh. The Marauders held on to win the game by the score of 5 to 4. The box score is here and the scorecard is here.

Kane (3-0, 1 start, 7 appearances, 17.33 innings, 3.63 ERA) is the winning pitcher. Stiltner (2-0, 1 save, 2 starts, 3 appearances, 11.33 innings, 1.24 ERA) gets the save.

Between the games, AD's mom arranged to feed both the teams and the parents with Mexican food. At this point, I was really curious to see how much pitching Davis had left. The answer came fairly quickly.

Leading off in the second game, Jack was 1 for 1 with two walks and two RBIs. In his first at-bat, Jack walked on five pitches. He went to second and then third on a pair of wild pitches. Jack scored on Kyle's ground ball through the left side. Jack walked again on five pitches in his second plate appearance. He went to second on Cosca's bunt single, to third on Alex's sacrifice fly and scored on Kyle's line drive to center. In his third at-bat, Jack lined a lined a 1 and 1 pitch into left field to drive in Jared and Christian. He went to second on Cosca's pop-up in front of home plate, but ended the inning there when Alex flew out to right.

Playing centerfield for four innings, Jack had three put-outs. As I mentioned to Rod, other than the first baseman and catchers, Jack has the most put-outs on the team at this point.

With the Davis pitching unraveling, the Marauders beat the Blue Devils by the score of 15 to 4 in sixth innings. The box score is here and the scorecard is here.

Colombara (1-0, 1 start, 1 appearance, 7.00 innings, 4.00 ERA) got the win. He pitched a complete game.

The Jesuit JV baseball team now has 15 wins and 2 losses. Their league record is 5 wins and 1 loss. The game log is here. The Marauders will play Sheldon in a three game league series next week.

Jesuit JV baseball versus Pleasant Grove

Have I said recently how much I dislike having just one umpire for the JV games? It is impossible for an umpire behind the plate to make calls at first and second. More on that in a second…

The Jesuit JV Marauders baseball team played the Pleasant Grove Eagles in a double header at Pleasant Grove High School. The Marauders will play the Eagles again later in the season in three league games.

Jack played for several years with Jordan on the Outlaws baseball team. Jordan caught the first game [see picture above]. Additionally, Amaury played with the Outlaws a couple of times. Amaury played shortstop in the first game.

Leading off in the first game, Jack was 1 for 4 with a stolen base. In his first at-bat, he fell behind 1 and 2. Jack took a ball, fouled off a pitch, took another ball, fouled off another pitch and then struck out looking. Jack grounded the first pitch to the third baseman and was thrown out at first in his second plate appearance. In his third at-bat, he struck out looking again on a 1 and 2 pitch. Jack grounded a 1 and 0 pitch through the left side for a single in his fourth plate appearance. He stole second and then was doubled off second on Alex's pop-up. I think that it was a hit and run play.

Playing centerfield for seven innings, Jack had two put-outs.

On a hit batter, a couple of walks and an outfield error, the Marauders scored two runs in the top of the first. They scrapped out four more runs and won the game by the score of 6 to 2. The box score is here and the scorecard is here.

Wolger (2-1, 6 starts, 1 appearance, 23.67 innings, ERA 2.37) was the winning pitcher. Woldger threw a complete game.

After about a 30 minute break, the Marauders turned around and played the Eagles again.

Leading off in the second game, Jack was 3 for 3 with a double, a run scored, a walk, two singles and two RBIs. Jack opened the game by crushing a 1 and 0 pitch into left center for a double. He said after the game that he thought it was the ball that he has hit the hardest all year. Cosca followed with a double to right center and I thought that the game was quickly going to get out of hand. The Eagles pitcher settled down and kept the game close. Jack walked on four pitches in his second plate appearance. He went to second when Cosca was hit by a pitch, but ended the inning there when Alex popped up to the pitcher. In his third at-bat, Jack hit a 3 and 2 pitch for a hard line drive into left field to drive in Cooper. He was thrown out trying to steal second. Jack didn't slide. There is no way that the umpire can make that call from behind the plate. Jack hit a 1 and 1 pitch for a hard grounder up the middle in his fourth plate appearance to score Cooper. He was picked off first. Again, with a left-handed batter at the plate, there is no way that the umpire can make that call from behind the plate.

Playing centerfield for seven innings, Jack had no put-outs or assists. It is the first time in six games that he had not had a put-out in the outfield.

The Eagles played a double header with Davis on Monday night. By the second game on Tuesday, they were starting to dig deep into their pitching. Nevertheless, the game was close. With a run scored and two RBIs, Jack contributed to three of the runs. Behind strong pitching and no errors, the Marauders won the game by the score of 4 to 0. The box score is here and the scorecard is here.

Cosca (4-0, 5 starts, 21.67 innings, 0.97 ERA) was the winning pitcher. Cosca struck out 9 in 4 2/3 innings. Child pitched the last out of the fifth, the sixth and the seventh. Child struck out 4 in 2 1/3 innings.

One random comment, I have never seen so many curve balls. All of the Eagles pitchers were throwing a lot of curve balls. I worry about kids this age throwing so many curves…

The Jesuit JV baseball team now has 13 wins and 2 losses. Their league record is 5 wins and 1 loss. The game log is here. The Marauders will play Davis in a non-league doubleheader at home tomorrow.

The oldest trans-Sierra emigrant trail to California crossed over the Sonora Pass. Today’s Highway 108 is much the same route as the Old Sonora-Mono Toll Road. The toll road was constructed to increase the flow of supplies from Tuolumne County to new gold camps on the east side of the Sierra Nevada.

ESPN Films 30 for 30 Vol II: Requiem for the Big East

I watched Requiem for the Big East. This is the seventeenth installment of ESPN's 30 for 30 Vol II. An episode guide for Vol II is here.

Requiem for the Big East looks at the birth, growth and then decline of the Big East Basketball conference. Established in 1979 as a northeastern conference by Dave Gavitt. The Big East focused on schools in major television markets. By coincidence, it was established the same year that ESPN was created. Big East games were one of the early staples of ESPN.

The Big East quickly became one of the dominant basketball conferences in the country. In 1985, three of the Big East teams [St. John's with Chris Mullin, Villanova with Ed Pickeney and Georgetown with Patrick Ewing] made it to the NCAA Final Four. The Pickeney led Wildcasts upset the Ewing lead Hoyas in the finals.

The Big East was successful in recruiting local players and keeping them in the northeast. In addition to the ESPN exposure, one of the draws was that the conference's season ending tournament was held in Madison Square Garden. The conference was also blessed with a number of larger than life coaches, including Jim Boeheim, Lou Carnesecca and John Thompson.

Over the last few years, the Big East has unraveled. Pressure to chase football money has caused several teams to jump to other conferences. The conference is being rebuilt around seven Catholic colleges that don't play football.

I was pleasantly surprised by this documentary. I started watching it with few expectations and was quickly enthralled. It is a nicely told story.

Requiem for the Big East is also available on iTunes.

A trailer for the film is here.

Jesuit JV baseball versus Ponderosa

The Jesuit Marauders JV baseball game played the third game of a three game series against the Ponderosa Bruins at Ponderosa High School. The Marauders beat the Bruins by the score of 4 to 0 on Monday and 6 to 1 on Wednesday.

Batting second, Jack was 2 for 4 with two singles and two runs scored. In his first at-bat, Jack ran the count to 3 and 2, fouled off a pitch and then hit a soft line drive into right center for a single. He went from first to third on Cosca's single to right and an error by the right fielder. Jack scored on Sam's base hit through the right side. Jack grounded a 2 and 1 pitch to the shortstop and was thrown out at first in his second plate appearance. In his third at-bat, he hit a 1 and 0 pitch off the handle for a soft line drive in left field. Jack went from first to third on a grounder through the left side by Cosca. I was very surprised that he went to third and just beat the throw from left fielder to the third baseman. Jack scored on Sam's sacrifice fly to right field. Although Jack grounded out to shortstop in his fourth plate appearance, it was an interesting at-bat. He fell behind 0 and 2. Jack then fouled off a pitch, took two balls, fouled off another pitch, took another ball before grounding out on the eighth pitch of the at-bat.

Playing centerfield for seven innings, Jack had one put-out.

Scoring runs in four of the first five innings, the Marauders ground out a 7 to 2 victory. The Marauders hit 10 singles: two by Jack, two by Iwasa and three by Cosca. Jack, Cosca and Alex scored six of the seven runs; each with two runs scored. The box score is here and the scorecard is here.

Chiappe (1-0, 1 start, 3 appearances, ERA 1.17) was the winning pitcher. Child pitched the fourth and fifth innings, while Kane pitched the sixth and seventh innings. Sampling the Bruins pitchers, the starting pitcher [Martin #9] threw 65, 73 and 73, while one of the relief pitchers [Daniels #21] threw 74, 75 and 64.

The Jesuit JV baseball team now has 11 wins and 2 losses. Their league record is 5 wins and 1 loss. The game log is here. In somewhat odd scheduling, the Marauders will play a double header against Pleasant Grove on Tuesday and a double header against Davis on Wednesday.

California Historical Landmark #124

This early-day stopping place for men and mounts was named for Judge Anson A. H. Tuttle, who built the first log cabin here in 1848. Stones used in the base for the plaque are from the old Swerer store built in 1854, remains of which still exist (1949). Mark Twain traded here. Tuttletown Hotel, built in 1852 and still standing in 1949, was last operated by John Edwards.

Jesuit JV baseball versus Ponderosa

Jesuit Marauders JV Baseball Team pre-gameIn the second game of a three game series this week, the Jesuit Marauders JV baseball team played the Ponderosa Bruins at Jesuit. They beat the Bruins by the score of 4 to 0 on Monday at Ponderosa High School.

Batting fifth, Jack was 2 for 2 with a walk, a stolen base, two singles and two runs scored. In his first at-bat in the top of the first with runners on first and second and two out, Jack drove a 2 and 2 pitch into right field for a single. Jack went to second when Iwasa was hit by a pitch, to third on Jonah's walk and scored on Christian's double. He walked on five pitches in his second plate appearance, but ended the inning at first when Iwasa flied out to left. In his third at-bat, Jack grounded a 1 and 1 pitch through the left side for a single. He stole second and scored on Kyle's single to right.

Playing sixth innings in centerfield, Jack had two put-outs. He made a nice catch on a hard line drive to right center.

Capitalizing on three walks and a hit batter, the Marauders scored five runs in the bottom of the first. Holding the Bruins hitless, the Marauders won the game by the score of 6 to 1. The box score is here and the scorecard is here.

Cosca (3-0, 4 starts, 17.0 innings, 1.24 ERA) was the winning pitcher. Beards pitched the sixth and seventh innings in relief. Sampling the Bruins starting pitcher [King #14] with a radar gun, he threw 64 and 69.

The Jesuit JV baseball team now has 10 wins and 2 losses. Their league record is 4 wins and 1 loss. The game log is here. The Marauders will play the third game of the three game set at Ponderosa on Friday.

Virtually Biking Across America - Day 85

Virtually Biking Across America - Day 85

On Day 85, I rode 19.5 miles across northeastern Kansas. Starting the ride near the Kennekuk Pony Express Station [39°38'43.9"N 95°29'57.1"W - S3-T5S-R17E] on a unnamed road, I took 100th Street to Prairie Road. At the town of Everest, I picked up Highway 20. I followed Highway 20's twisting path into Denton, Kansas. I stopped at the corner of Highway 20 and Pine Avenue.

The trip log for Virtually Biking Across America is here.
