After going to Night at the Museum Saturday night, Sharon and I took the boys to dinner at the Brickhouse Restaurant on Elk Grove Boulevard near old town Elk Grove. We had tried to go there Tuesday night, but it was closed. Sharon had veal, Jack had spaghetti, Tim had Prime Rib and I had the Linguini With Clams. We were very pleased with the meal and the atmosphere. The server said that the place has been open almost two years, but we only heard about it recently. It is definitely somewhere that we would return in the future.

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian
Sharon, Jack, Tim and I went to see Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian on Saturday night. While Sharon and the boys liked the movie, like Ebert, it rubbed me the wrong way. I think that Sharon liked more than the boys did!

2009 LYB Minor Twins TOC Playoff Game #1
Jack played in the Twin's first Tournament of Champions playoff game of the 2009 Laguna Youth Baseball Minor League Season. The Twins played against the Rockies. Coming into the game, the Rockies had a record of 16 wins and no losses. The Rockies team includes six players that will be playing with Jack on the 10U All Star Team! The two teams met twice in the regular season. In the eleventh game of the season, the Twins lost by a score of 8 to 2. In the fifteenth game of the season, the Twins lost by the score of 14 to 6.
The game was a train wreck.
Jack was the starting pitcher. He struggled with his control and had his worst outing of the season. Playing against a bunch of his Gunner teammates, I think that he was trying too hard. After a couple of walks and errors behind him in the field, he was walking towards home plate stretching his arm, but not looking at the catcher. The catcher threw the ball back and it hit Jack in the face. Jack went down like a sack of potatoes. He ended up staying in the game, but moving to third base.
Over the course of the rest of the game, Jack played third, shortstop and some second base for the first time this season. Playing shortstop, he took a hard liner off his foot and went down in a heap again.
At the plate, Jack was 1 for 2. In his first at-bat shortly after getting hit in the head, he struck out on three pitches against Pat. Jack did something smart in his second at-bat. He took his lightest bat out of his bag. With runners on first and second with two outs, Jack hit a soft line drive over the head of the third baseman off Jordan to load the bases. The next batter struck out.
The Twins lost the game by a score of 12 to 0. The box score is here. With a 10 run mercy rule, they played a five inning game.
The playoffs are double elimination. The Twins will get a chance to play again on Thursday against either the Cardinals or the Braves.

Dance Hall of the Dead
Several months ago, there was a segment on the NPR Books podcast about Tony Hillerman. Hillerman died late last year. He wrote wrote more than 30 books total including 18 books in his Navajo mystery series. I was intrigued by the podcast and brought Dance Hall Of The Dead which received the 1973 Edgar Award for Best Novel. I finished reading the book earlier in May.
Dance Hall Of The Dead is the second of the Navajo Tribal Police series of crime fiction novels. It is centered around the character of police Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn on the Navajo Reservation in the Four Corners region of the American Southwest. Themes of the book include the Zuni religion and hostility between the Navajo and the Zuni.
We had a chance to spend some time in Northern New Mexico in 2007. I always enjoy reading books set in places I have actually been.
I enjoyed Dance Hall of the Dead immensely. I liked reading style and the pacing of the book. I will eventually pick up another of Hillerman's books to read.

2009 LYB Minor Twins Game #15
Jack played in Twin's fifteenth game of the 2009 Laguna Youth Baseball Minor League Season. The Twins played against the Rockies. Coming into the game, the Rockies had a record of 15 wins and no losses. The Rockies team includes three players from the Gunners Tournament team (Josh, Matthew and Patrick), one other 9U all star from last year (Cameron) and two players who will be on this year's 10U all star team (Louie and Jordan). The two team met in the eleventh game of the season and the Twins lost by a score of 8 to 2.
At the plate, I am scoring Jack as 3 for 4 with one run scored and two RBIs. The official scorer will probably have Jack as 2 for 4. In his first at-bat against Cameron, he grounded out to the shortstop. Jack drove one into left center in his second at-bat against Matthew; he eventually came around to score. In his third plate appearance against Matthew, he hit a slow roller to the shortstop. With the infield grass being extremely long, the shortstop had trouble getting to it and picking it up cleanly. Jack was safe at first without a throw. This will probably be scored an error. With the bases loaded and two outs, Jack pushed a 3 - 2 pitch into right field off of Josh to drive in two runs.
In the field, Jack pitched the first two innings. He got three of the first four batters to pop up, but the defense was unable to make the play. The Twins have struggled in the field all season. In the second inning, after allowing the lead off runner to reach base on his error, Jack struck out two and got an inning ending ground ball. He threw 26 pitches in the first inning and 9 pitches in the second inning.
With several kids missing, Jack played the next four innings at shortstop. He has played only one other inning at short this season. He had a mixed game. Jack made several nice stops, but also several errors. After playing so well in the tournament this past weekend, he was a little frustrated with himself and his teammates.
Twins lost the game to Rockies by the score of 14 to 6. The box score is here. Their record for the season is 5 wins, 8 losses and 2 ties.
This is the final game of the regular season. The TOC (Tournament of Champions) starts on Saturday. The Twins drew the Rockies for their first game. Interestingly, this year's tournament is double elimination.

In the 1850s, Horatio Gates Livermore and later his sons, Horatio P. and Charles E., pioneered the development of ditches and dams on the American River for industry and agriculture. One historic result was Folsom Powerhouse, which began operations in July 1895. Power was delivered to Sacramento at 11,000 volts, a new achievement in long-distance high-voltage transmission which the capital celebrated by a grand electric carnival September 9, 1895. The original generating plant, still in place, remained in continuous operation until 1952. The plant was donated by Pacific Gas and Electric Co. to the State of California to preserve its historical values.

Angels & Demons
With Jack on an overnight trip with his class to the Marin Headlands, Sharon and I went out to dinner and a movie. We originally intended to try a new restaurant, but it was closed and we ended up at Paesano's. We were happier with the food than we have been in the past (Steak and Chop Salads).
Afterwards, we went to see Angels & Demons. Of the four Dan Brown novels (Angels and Demons, The Da Vinci Code, Digital Fortress and Deception Point), Angels & Demons has always been my favorite.
I enjoyed the movie. Visually, I loved the locations in Rome. Sharon and I spent five days in Rome in October of 1996. In its favor, the screenplay also does away with one of the more outlandish plot points in the book: Langdon jumping out of a helicopter without a parachute.

The Twins played their fourteenth game of the 2009 Laguna Youth Baseball Minor League Season. The Twins played against the Giants. There was one player from the Gunners (Trevor) on the Giants, plus Kyle who was on the Padres with Jack last year. The two teams met in the eighth game of the season and the Twins lost by a score of 11 to 4.
Jack was on an overnight field trip with his class to the Marin Headlands and missed the game.

2009 Gunners Baseball Memorial Weekend Tournament
While I was in New York, Jack spent the weekend playing baseball with the Elk Grove Gunners 10U team. They played two games on Saturday and two games on Sunday. The Gunners beat the Slammers by a score of 14 to 2 and lost to the Tassajara Valley Bulldogs by a score of 9 to 8 on Saturday. On Sunday, they beat the Sluggers by a score of 10 to 5 and the Bandit Baseball Club by a score of 6 to 5. The Gunners did not advance to the Championship game on Monday; they lost out on one of the tie breakers (runs scored?).
As best I can sort out, Jack was 4 for 10 at the plate. In the fourth game, Jack came up with the bases loaded and two outs. He ran the count to 3 and 2, fouled off a pitch and then drove a pitch into left center to score two runs. In his second at-bat in the same game, Jack swung at a curve ball in the dirt for his third strike. The ball got by the catcher and Jack was safe at first. He stole second and came home on a hard grounder by Matthew that the shortstop had trouble handling.
In the field, Jack played all four games at third base. It sounds like he had a particularly good tournament in field. Jack said that he handled a number of grounders cleanly, tagged out a runner stealing third and he and Aaron got a runner out in a pickle. Randy's son Aaron showed up on Sunday and played with the team for the first time.
Jack has played mostly third base on his rec team this spring. After laboring as the tenth, eleventh or twelfth player on the tournament team over the last ten months, it would be nice if he could win the starting third base position for the tournament team and the all star team. There is a lot of baseball to be played in the next month and a half.
Jack came out of this weekend as excited about and focused on baseball as I think I have ever seen him.

New York 2009 Day 4
After three long days, I was moving a little slower. Eventually, I took off for another long run in Central Park. Although I had no idea where I was going, I ended up going up the east side of the park; I had ran up the west side on Saturday.
Afterwards, I headed down to Times Square and found a pub off the beaten path for a late breakfast. I spent some time wandering through a street fair. 7th Ave was closed for about eight blocks almost all the way from Central Park to Times Square. It also appears that they are going to close Broadway to through traffic and make a pedestrian mall in Times Square.
I ended up going to late mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral. I picked up my bags from the hotel and took a taxi to JFK airport.
I had a nonstop flight from JFK to Sacramento on jetBlue. jetBlue has Directv. As a result, I was able to watch all of game three of the Cavs versus Magic. Usually, I tend to wander in and out if I am watching a basketball game on television. Trapped in the seat, I actually watched all of the game. I was not impressed with the Cavs. Clearly, LeBron is a force of nature, but the rest of the team looked extremely weak. Watching the Cavs run their offense reminded me of the Kings this year; no plan. I am predicting the Magic in six.
By the time I got back to Sacramento, collected my bag and drove home, it was almost midnight.

New York 2009 Day 3
A long day...
Drew stayed with me at the Hilton on Friday night. While I went for a long run in Central Park, he slept in. After getting cleaned up, he and I took a cab to the West Village to meet Morgan for breakfast. She and her band (Big Tree) are taking off early Sunday morning to drive to the West Coast. They have a couple of dates to play along the way. Big Tree will be playing a number of dates on the West Coast during the first two weeks of June.
From there, Drew and I caught the subway north. We stopped and spent a couple of hours wandering the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We focused on seeing a few specific things, including the Temple of Dendur and the late 19th and early 20th century European painters. I dragged Drew around looking for the Caravaggio's and the Jackson Pollack's.
Back to the subway, we continued north to the new Yankee Stadium. We saw the Yankees play the Phillies. Our seats were in the second row of left field.
It was a very entertaining game. We had two home runs hit into our section, one of them just over us and out of our reach. With the Phillies leading 4 to 2 in the bottom of the ninth, Rodriguez hit a game tying homer off Brad Lidge. Melky Cabrera then capped the three-run rally with an RBI walk off single, giving the New York Yankees a 5-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.
Back into the city, Drew and I caught up with my sister Lee Ann and her husband Dean. The four of us had dinner at a Spanish Bistro called Islero.
After dinner, Drew and I tracked down his friend Max. The three of watched the end of the Lakers and Nuggets play-off game at the House of Brews just off Broadway.
We split up after midnight. Drew went back to the West Village to meet up with his mom; they are taking off early tomorrow. I headed back to my room to crash.

New York City 2009 Day 2
After rolling in the hotel late last night, I was up before 6 a.m. and to Grand Central Station before 6:45 a.m. Meeting up with Drew, my sister Lee Ann and Drew's mom, we caught a train to Bronxville.
Morgan's graduation was outside in tent on the Sarah Lawrence Campus. It was a very intimate setting and program. With only 280 graduates, it felt more like a high school graduation than a major college. The commencement speaker was Rahm Emanuel, the White House Chief of Staff. Rahm was a graduate of Sarah Lawrence.
After the commencement ceremony, there was a reception on the campus. From there, Drew, my sister and I wandered back into Bronxville for a late lunch. With Morgan working frantically to clean out her room, we headed back into the city.
Drew wanted to see Waiting for Godot starring Nathan Lane and John Goodman. We tried the hotel and called a broker, but could not find any tickets. We decided to walk down to the theater. They sold us two general admission tickets. They promised us a seat, but would not promise where the seat would be. We got a table on the sidewalk at the Cafe Iguana a couple of doors down from the theater for a couple of beers before the show started.
When we queued up with our general admission tickets, they took us down to the sixth row! We ended up sitting together and having great seats.
After the play, we wandered through Times Square and back to the hotel. We finished the night watching LeBron sink a 3 with 1 second left to win the game for the Cavs.

New York City 2009 Day 1
I spent the day winding my way to New York City. I took a late morning jetBlue flight from Sacramento to Long Beach. From Long Beach, I caught a direct flight to JFK.
One of the interesting things about jetBlue is that there is a DirecTv screen at each seat, I ended up watching the first three quarters of the Lakers versus Nuggets playoff game and having a couple of Heinekens.
The plane got to JFK before 11:00 p.m. EST. I caught a cab into Manhattan and was in the room about midnight. I am spending the next couple of nights at the New York Hilton.
I am in New York for Morgan's college graduation. She graduates from Sarah Lawrence College tomorrow!

2009 LYB Minor Twins Game #13
Jack played in his thirteenth game of the 2009 Laguna Youth Baseball Minor League Season. The Twins played against the Dodgers. The Twins lost to the Dodgers by a score of 8 to 4 in the third game of the season and by a score of 6 to 0 in the ninth game of the season. There were two kids on the other team from the Gunners: Niko and Cooper. Niko pitched the third and fourth innings. Cooper came in with one out in the sixth and pitched.
At the plate, I am scoring Jack as 2 for 3 with two runs scored. The official scorer gave Jack 1 for 3. In his first at bat, Jack drove a 3 - 2 pitch hard down the third base line off the third baseman's glove. Becky scored this as an error on the third baseman. He stole second and third and then came home on a passed ball to score the game's first run.
In his second plate appearance, Jack pushed one to the right side and was thrown out at first base. Jack hit a slow roller to the left side off Cooper in his third at-bat and beat the throw for an infield hit. He went to second on a single by Ian. On an infield grounder, Jack went to third and kept running. I was very surprised to see him round third and never slow down. The infielders tried to make the play at second and threw home. Jack slide home safe under the tag.
In the field, Jack played four innings at third base and pitched the third and fourth innings. He threw 37 pitches. At third and pitcher, Jack fielded four grounders cleanly and made solid throws to first and second. Unfortunately, two of the throws were dropped for errors. He got a little frustrated with his teammates...
In an very exciting back and forth game, the Twins tied the Dodgers with a score of 8 to 8. Their record for the season is 5 wins, 6 losses and 2 ties.

Continued Economic Downturn Forces Sutter Health to Adjust Information Services Staffing Levels
SACRAMENTO, Calif, May 18, 2009 -- In response to the continued economic downturn affecting the health care industry and all California employers, the Information Services (IS) Department of Sutter Health today announced staffing reductions.
Today 121 employees based at Sutter’s IS facility in Rancho Cordova received notification that they will lose their jobs on July 17, 2009. Sutter Health and its affiliated hospitals and physician organizations continue to employ approximately 1,500 IS staff in Sacramento and other communities around Northern California.
“This decision was one of the most difficult I’ve ever had to make,” said Sutter Health Chief Information Officer Jon Manis. “These are dedicated and talented professionals who have provided tremendous value to our organization. Unfortunately, these staffing changes are necessary. We have a higher responsibility now more than ever to our patients who pay for health care to be good stewards and to keep our services affordable.”
Sutter has decided to release employees affected by staffing reductions today to give them the next two months paid, before severance benefits begin, so they can focus on finding new job opportunities. These employees will also receive payment of health coverage premiums for the duration of their severance and job placement services (e.g., resume writing, professional networking via online social media sites and interviewing skills).
A number of the affected positions support Sutter Health’s electronic health record (EHR). Sutter recently launched its first hospital-based EHR in Burlingame. However, due to the economic downturn, hospital-based installations will not resume until sometime after 2009. Sutter does plan to accelerate the completion of its EHR rollout to affiliated physician organizations where approximately 80 percent of health care services are delivered today.
Sutter Health remains committed to implementing a single, integrated EHR across the care continuum. Sutter has fully implemented the EHR in five of its eight affiliated physician organizations (medical foundations), further connecting more than 2,000 physicians in the coordinated care of patients across much of Northern California. The Sutter-wide EHR now encompasses information about the care of more than 1 million patients. More than 200,000 patients are accessing their personal health records online.
About Sutter Health
Serving patients and their families in more than 100 Northern California cities and towns, Sutter Health doctors, hospitals and other health care service providers join resources and share expertise to advance health care quality and access. The Sutter Medical Network includes many of California’s top-performing, highest quality physician organizations as measured annually by the Integrated Healthcare Organization. Sutter-affiliated hospitals are regional leaders in cardiac care, women’s and children’s services, cancer care, orthopedics and advanced patient safety technology. For more information about the not-for-profit Sutter Health family, please visit www.sutterhealth.org.

2009 Laguna Youth Baseball 10U All Star Tryout #2
Jack went to the second tryout for the Laguna Youth Baseball 10U All Star team. The first tryout was last Sunday morning. Starting at 1 p.m., the tryout lasted more than 3 1/2 hours in the 100 plus degree heat.
Jack did very well fielding the ball both in the infield and the outfield. He was the second to the last kid to bat. After standing in the outfield for an hour and a half while the other kids batted, Jack was fried. He did not hit as well as he did at the try-out last week.
I have been encouraging Cunningham to bring Cole to the tryouts. I was pleasantly surprised to see them show up today. I continue to believe that within a year or two Cole could be the best pitcher in his age group in the Laguna Youth Baseball.

Slumdog Millionaire
Watching this week's episode of the Office, Sharon and I started talking about Slumdog Millionaire. While Sharon saw in the theater, I did not and never really paid it much attention. I was intrigued by her description of the plot and how story was wove together.
With Sharon traveling for work and Jack crashing after a sleep-over last night, I rented Slumdog Millionaire on the Apple TV in HD. I rarely recommend movies, but would recommend this one.

2009 LYB Minor Twins Game #12
Jack played in his twelfth game of the 2009 Laguna Youth Baseball Minor League Season. The Twins played against the Yankees. There was one player on the other team that we knew; Mak played on Scott's fall ball team and has played occasionally with the Gunners. The Twins lost to the Yankees in the fourth game of the season by the score of 17 to 9.
At the plate, Jack was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and three RBIs. In his first at-bat, he ran the count to 3 and 2 and then blooped a double down the third base line. Jack stole third. He then did something that I have never seen him attempt before. On a passed ball, he came about a third of the way down the line towards home. The catcher looked him back, but Jack only took one step back towards third. When the catcher flipped the ball to the pitcher, Jack broke for home. He slid home safe under the tag from the catcher taking the return throw from the pitcher.
In his second plate appearance with the bases loaded, Jack hit a grounder up the middle. The ball bounced off the mound and hit the shortstop in the face. The ball bounced to the pitcher who threw the ball to second for the force out. In his third at-bat, Jack drove a 0 and 2 pitch into left field for single. He eventually came around to score.
Jack played five fairly uneventful innings at third. With runners on first and second, he took a throw from the shortstop for a force out and then whipped the ball to first just barely missing getting the runner. Jack also took a throw from Denis at catcher to tag out a runner trying to steal third.
The Twins won the game by a score of 12 to 6. Their record for the season is 5 wins, 6 losses and 1 tie. The next three games are against the best teams in the minor league division (Dodgers, Giants and Rockies with a combined record of 24 wins and 7 losses).

Sherry Bell
I had lunch with Sherry Bell on Monday. This is the first opportunity that we have had to catch up in a long, long time. We have lost touch with the Bell's over the last three years; it is a shame because we have always really enjoyed Matt and Sherry's company. Sherry is working in Information Systems at Aerojet. Leslie is finishing up her freshman year at UCLA in mechanical engineering, while Madison is a junior at Folsom High School. Madison dropped out of track this Spring.

2009 LYB Minor Twins Game #11
Jack played in his eleventh game of the 2009 Laguna Youth Baseball Minor League Season. The Twins played against the Rockies. Coming into the game, the Rockies had a record of 9 wins and no losses. The Rockies team includes three players from the Gunners Tournament team (Josh, Matthew and Patrick) and one other U9 all star from last year (Cameron).
At the plate, Jack was 2 for 2. In his first at-bat against Patrick, he ran the count to 3 and 2 and then drove one into the gap in deep left center. The ball bounced twice to the fence and Jack legged out a triple. He stole home on a passed ball. Jack hit one through the left side of the infield against Josh in his second plate appearance. He stole second and third, but was left on third at the end of the inning.
Over the last three games, Jack is 6 for 6 with a walk. This includes hits off of three Gunners: Nikko, Patrick and Josh.
In the field, Jack played four innings at third base and two innings at shortstop. At third, he made a great catch on a rocket hit down line. He fielded one other grounder cleanly, but the throw was a little high and pulled the first baseman off the bag.
The Twins lost the game by a score of 8 to 2. The box score is here. Their record for the season is 4 win, 6 losses and 1 tie. Three of the next four games are against the best teams in the league (Dodgers, Giants and Rockies).

Mother's Day 2009
We celebrated Mother's Day with the Sanborn's and the Cunningham's at the Cunningham's house. We spent the afternoon in the pool and the hot tub. John barbecued chicken and tri-tip for an early dinner. The three boys had a great time.
2009 Laguna Youth Baseball 10U All Star Tryout #1
I took Jack to the Laguna Youth Baseball Travelers 10 and under All Star Tryout. Every year Laguna Youth Baseball is represented by an All-Star Team that participates in the Cal Ripken Norcal State Tournament. Starting at 8 a.m., the tryout lasted more than three hours.
After playing summer ball and with the Gunners tournament team over the last ten months, we know the coaches and probably more than 10 of 25 plus kids at the try-out. This was a much different experience than last year when we did not really know anyone.
Jack did very well. He looked good fielding the ball in the outfield and the infield. He looked comfortable at the plate, driving a number of pitches and hitting his last pitch in deep left center.
I was surprised how many of the kids I did not recognize. A number of the kids must be playing in the AAA division, rather than the Minor division. There were a number of kids who looked lost and overmatched at the plate.

2009 LYB Minor Twins Game #10
Jack played in his tenth game of the 2009 Laguna Youth Baseball Minor League Season. The Twins played against the Braves. The Twins beat the Braves by a score of 17 to 5 in the second game of the season. The Twins lost to the Braves by a score of 10 to 7 in the seventh game of the season; Jack did not play in this game due to a bruised foot. There were two kids on the team from the AA Mariners Team we played on, but no one from the Gunners.
At the plate, Jack was 3 for 3 with two runs scored. In his first at-bat, Jack drove the ball through the left side of the infield. He stole second and eventually came around to score. Protecting the plate with a 2 and 2 count in his second plate appearance, Jack blooped one over the pitcher. He eventually came around to score. In his third at-bat, Jack hit one down the third base line. The third baseman had trouble finding the handle and Jack beat out the throw to first (Becky will probably score this one as an error!). He was eventually forced out at third.
In the field, Jack played three innings at third base and pitched two innings. He threw 37 pitches over the third and fourth inning. Jack gave up one run.
Jack handled the ball four times at third. He threw out three runners at first and made a nice catch on a pop-up behind the pitcher.
Cunningham made an interesting remark after the game. He noted how the game is slowing down for Jack. On the last grounder, with runners on first and second, you could see Jack checking second to see if someone was covering before he threw out the runner at first.
The Twins won the game by a score of 10 to 3. Their record for the season is 4 win, 5 losses and 1 tie.

Lexus RX400h Day 313
I took the Lexus RX400h in for the 20,000 mile service today. I am on a pace to drive 23,328 miles in the first year. I am averaging 25.0 mpg since I brought the car, up slightly from 24.8 mpg after 10 months and 24.9 at 6 months, but down slightly from 25.1 after 3 months. The EPA rating is 24 on the highway and 26 in the city.
After listening to a NPR podcast about trials that were being held in Seattle with people driving hybrids and hearing the coaching that they were giving the drivers, I am getting better mileage and have pulled up my average miles per gallon. I actually got over 27 mpg on two tanks in April.

On November 11, the Portolá Expedition of 1769 traveled two leagues, about 5.26 miles, to a point in the lower Cañada de Reymundo, and made their first camp here on their return trip.
The Pulgas Water Temple is a stone structure designed by architect William Merchant. It was erected by the San Francisco Water Department as a monument to the 1934 completion of the Hetch Hetchy Aqueduct and is located at the aqueduct's terminus.
"Pulgas" is the Spanish (and Portuguese) word for "fleas", which were encountered by early Spanish explorers of the area.

The Diary of Miguel Costanso
Saturday, 11 November - After hearing the report of the scouts, the commander decided to call together his officers in order to resolve jointly upon the course that might be suitable to adopt in the present circumstances, bearing in mind the service of God, and of the king, and their own honor.
The officers being assembled gave their votes in writing, and resolved to return in search of the port of Monterey, which they knew, from consideration of the signs they had noted along the coast, must lie behind them. The missionary fathers likewise attended the meeting, and their opinion was asked for courtesy's sake. They concurred in the decision, recognizing that the return in search of the port of Monterey, which they also knew must lie behind was necessary. The resolution was put into effect; in the afternoon the camp was moved two leagues from the stopping place at the estuary, retracing our steps on the return from the port of San Francisco.

An Unfinished Life
I finished reading the John F. Kennedy biography, An Unfinished Life. I was six years old when Kennedy as assassinated. I can remember walking down a hallway at Woodrow Wilson Elementary and hearing two teachers talking about Kennedy being killed; I would have been in first grade. Reading this book and the Joe Kennedy biography Sins of the Father, I realize that my knowledge of the both the Kennedy family in general and JFK in particular was pretty superficial.
In just three years of the JFK presidency, an amazing amount of things happened. Some of the events included: the Bay of Pigs; the Berlin Crisis with the erection of the Berlin Wall; a crisis in Laos; an increase in the number of American military personnel in South Vietnam to 16,000, up from Eisenhower's 900 advisors; the overthrow and assassination of South Vietnamese Premier Ngo Dinh Diem; formation of the Peace Crops; the first Nuclear Test Ban Treaty; the Cuban Missile Crisis; setting a course for a moon landing before the end of the decade, a battle with steel producers over price increases and a number of civil rights crises including Birmingham and the Freedom Riders. Due to the opportunities provided by his father's position and wealth, JFK was in some ways uniquely qualified to deal with many of the international issues that he faced.
I never realized the number of health problems that John Kennedy faced over the course of his life. Conversely, I was aware of JFK's reputation as a womanizer. It is amazing that his sex life was largely unreported by the mainstream press.
Although it is not the best biography I have read, I recommend the book. From my perspective, the book's weakness is that it tends to get bogged down in detail in some sections. The book adds to my desire to find a biography on J. Edgar Hoover and peaks my interest in reading more about Robert Kennedy.

Rained Out
The schedule for the day included several conflicting events, including a Parochial Athletic League (PAL) Track meet, an Elk Grove Gunners Tournament Baseball Team practice and the Laguna Youth Baseball U10 All-Star tryouts. Everything got rained out...
Instead, Jack and I went early to the batting cages. Getting there just after it opened, we had the place to ourselves for a while. Cooper, one of the Gunners players, is an effective switch hitter. Jack is convinced that he can bat left handed also. He spent part of the session working from the left side of the plate.

This country estate was begun in 1915 as the home of mining entrepreneur William B. Bourn II. It was the last great residential commission of one of California's most important architects, Willis Polk. Polk designed a modified Georgian style country house. Subsequently the carriage house and garden pavilion were executed by Arthur Brown. The formal gardens were created by Bruce Porter. In 1937 the estate was acquired by Mr. and Mrs. William P. Roth. Built in Georgian Revival style with its formal gardens, Filoli is an outstanding example of the grand estates of the late 1800s.

Drew and Marlana for Dinner
We had Drew and Marlana over for dinner. Sharon served an abalone that a friend had dropped off on Wednesday night. I do not believe that I have ever eaten abalone before. Getting it out of the shell, cleaning it and preparing it was an adventure.
