Super Bowl LIX

Sharon and I went to a Super Bowl Party at our neighbors Greg and Michele's house. The group included Greg and Michele, Jim and Debi, Debi's daugther, Ed and Mary Lou, Jacek and Laurie, Brad, Heidi and Clark, and Sharon and I. There was one other person whose name I didn't get...

The Philadelphia Eagles beat the Kansas City Chiefs by the score of 40 to 22. Frankly, the game wasn't even that close. The Eagles led by the score of 34 to 0 late in the third quarter. Jalen Hurts was the MVP. Although I have called Patrick Mahomes a witch over the years and refused to beat against him, he had a horrible game.

Super Bowl LVIII

Sharon and I had talked about holding a Super Bowl party if the 49ers made it. We started to invite a few people, but with a plan to take off for two weeks on Monday, we decided to pivot away from the idea.

We ended up going to our neighbors Greg and Michele's house to watch the game. The group included Greg and Michele, Jim and Debi, Ed and Mary Lou, Michele's niece Sharon and her husband Nelson and Sharon and I.

Sharon and I played one game of pickleball against Sharon and Nelson before the game. We got killed by the score of 11 to 1. I haven't played pickleball since July of 2022, almost 20 months ago. It showed; Sharon and I were horrible.

The Super Bowl was very disappointing. Missing an extra point and fumbling a punt deep in their end, the 49ers let the Chiefs back into the game. The score was tied 19 to 19 at the end of regulation. The Chiefs won the game in overtime by the score of 25 to 22. I lost both of my small prop bets.

Super Bowl XVII

Dragging myself out of bed, I eventually wound my way to the Fitness Center. I ran for just over an hour on the treadmill. A small group met in the lobby and ran outside. I would have loved to run with them, but I just can't carry enough speed at this point (anymore?). Talking to them later, they ran about 8:40 miles.

After getting cleaned up, I met the group in the hotel lobby. We caught a bus to Top Golf near the Glendale Stadium. I ended up playing in a couple of games with Jesse, Lyndy, Peter, Rob and Derek. I did't embarrass myself; my swing wasn't bad. I finished second in the first game. We didn't finish the second game.

There were several former players walking around. I got a picture taken with Orlando Pace, an offensive lineman who played with the Rams.

About 2:30 pm, the group walked about three-quarters of mile to the stadium. We had club level seats in section 218 (row 9, seat 15). We were on the Eagles side of the field; there were a lot of loud, rowdy Eagles fans before the game.

It was a very entertaining football game. With about 10 seconds left in the game, the Kansas City Chiefs kicked a field goal to beat the Philadelphia Eagles by the score of 38 to 35. Patrick Mahomes was the MVP.

After the game, we walked back to Top Golf and caught a bus back to the hotel. By the time we got back to the hotel, it was after 10 pm. I crashed.

It was a very unique opportunity! I enjoyed the day immensely!

Super Bowl LVI

Sunday morning, Sharon and I wandered down to Greg and Michele's house. We played pickleball with a group of couples from the neighborhood, including Jim and Debi, Brad and Heidi and Greg and Michele. With the weather in the 70s, it was beautiful morning.
When we had brunch with Lee, Daniel and Morgan last weekend, we talked about keeping Lee on Sunday afternoon. Daniel dropped Lee off about 12:15 pm. I took Lee back to the house and put him down for nap.

Lee, Sharon and I watched the Super Bowl together. With the Cincinnati Bengals leading by the score of 20 to 17 late in the fourth quarter, the Los Angeles Rams drove 79 yards and scored with 1:25 left in the game to win by the score 23 to 20.
My Super Bowl bets included:
  • Cooper Kupp will have 100 or more receiving yards and Rams win (Kupp ended up with 92 yards.)
  • Cooper Kupp will have over 108.5 Receiving Yards And Odell Beckham Jr. will have over 60.5 yards (Beckham was hurt in the second quarter and ended up with 52 yards)
  • ✔ Matthew Stafford - Interceptions - Over 0.5 (Stafford threw two interceptions.)
  • ✔ Total Game Sacks - Over 5.5 (There were nine sacks.)
  • Super Bowl 56 MVP - Joe Burrow (I used some free money from the book on this bet.)
  • Longest Fg 47.5 Yards (The longest field goal was 41 yards.)
Sharon made vegetarian chili for dinner.

Super Bowl LV

Almost eleven months into a life of sheltering in place and social distancing, I am really hopeful that someday soon we will be able to return to a more normal cadence. It would be nice to be able to host or attend a small Super Bowl party...

Sharon and I watched the Super Bowl. Tom Brady's Tampa Bay Bucs beat the Kansas City Chiefs by the score of 31 to 9. This was Brady's seventh Super Bowl win in ten appearances.  Given the state of Kansas City's offensive line, I probably shouldn't have been surprised at the outcome, but I thought that Mahomes would still be able to pull a couple of rabbits out of his hat. I ended up hitting three of my four prop bets.

I barbecued burgers at halftime. Sharon made some coleslaw.

Super Bowl LIV

For the first time in a number of years, we organized a Super Bowl party. The group included the Gainsleys, Janie and her friend, Tim and Kathy, Tom and Eric, Kevin, Leah, Lydia and Amelia.

For the first time since 2013, the San Francisco 49ers were back in the Super Bowl playing the Kansas City Chiefs. With the 49ers leading 20 to 10 late in the fourth quarter, the Chiefs exploded for three touchdowns. The Chiefs won the game by the score of 31 to 20.

As I said before the game, Mahomes scares the crap out of me, but I refused to bet against the 49ers… I had the following small bets for the game:
  • 49ers +1 1/2 @ -105;
  • Mostert Rushing more than 67 1/2 yards @ -170;
  • D Samuel Rushing more than 17 1/2 yards @ +135; and
  • Nick Bosa MVP @ +1600.
I only won the Samuel rushing prop.

Super Bowl LIII

Flying in from the East Coast, Pat and Bernard showed up at the house in the second quarter of the Super Bowl. We had a very nice visit. Sharon made a great dinner of rubbed ribs.

The Super Bowl was very odd. Distracted on a couple of different fronts over the course of the evening, I should probably go back and rewatch the game. The New England Patriots beat Los Angeles Rams by the score of 13 to 3 in the lowest scoring Super Bowl ever. No Super Bowl had gone into the fourth quarter without a touchdown. This one did with the score tied 3 to 3. Julian Edelman was the game's MVP with 10 receptions for 141 yards.

Super Bowl LII

After a lap around Ancil Hoffman Park with Sharon and Tiber and another lap by myself, we got cleaned up and headed to Folsom. We saw The Post at the Palladino Luxe.

We decided not to host a Super Bowl party and turned down an invitation from Tom. It was a very entertaining game. The Philadelphia Eagles beat the New England Patriots by the score of 41 to 33. The combined 1,151 yards of offense were the most in any modern NFL game.

Sharon made some great rubbed ribs for dinner.

Super Bowl LI Party

Sharon and I went to her brother Tom's house to watch the Super Bowl. It ended up being a pretty large group, including Tom, Kevin, Leah, Lydia, Tim, Kathy, Erin, Leah's dad Steve, Jim, Sharon and I. Tom made a great dinner of cioppino.

It was a wild game. Trailing 28 to 3 in the third quarter, the New England Patriots rallied to beat the Atlanta Falcons in overtime by the score of 34 to 28. No team had ever made up more than a 10-point deficit to win a Super Bowl. It was the first Super Bowl overtime game.

The Patriots ran 93 offense plays, compared to 46 for the Falcons. The Patriots time of possession was 40:31, compared to 23:27 for the Falcons. I think that the Falcon's defense just ran out of gas at the end of the game; it was physically and emotionally spent!

Super Bowl 50

With Sharon just back from her Oregon road trip on Saturday night, we didn't organize a small Super Bowl party. Sharon and I watched the game by ourselves for the first time in four years. In a game dominated by defense, the Denver Broncos beat the Carolina Panthers by the score of 24 to 10.

Sharon made some great rubbed ribs for dinner.

Three observations.

First, I have no idea of what a catch is anymore. On the first challenge by Carolina on the long pass over the middle, I don’t understand how they can say that wasn’t a catch after looking at the replay. Clearly, the ball never hit the ground… What the !@#$ is going on?

Second, Peyton should walk away and retire. He has nothing left to prove.

Third, I want some of the performance enhancing drugs that Von Miller has taken over the last month…

Super Bowl XLIX

While Jack drove out to Elk Grove for a Super Bowl party, Sharon, Liz and I watched the game at home. Sharon made a great dinner of pulled pork.

New England held on to win the game by the score of 28 to 24. Like most people watching the game, I was flabbergasted that Seattle choose to throw on second down rather than hand the ball to Lynch for three straight plays...

Super Bowl XLVII Party

We hosted a small Super Bowl party including Tim, Kathy and Liz. I barbecued some tri tip. Although they were slight favorites, the 49ers couldn't get it done. They lost to the Ravens by the score of 34 to 31.

Super Bowl XLV Party

We hosted a small Super Bowl party including Cunningham, Sanborn and Tim. Sharon made Chili and corn bread. In a reasonably entertaining game, Green Bay won by the game by the score of 31 to 25.

Super Bowl XLIII Party

After Jack's basketball game, we went to the Sharon's brother Tim's house for a Super Bowl Party. I am not a Steeler's fan; I was rooting for Arizona. [Pittsburgh 27, Arizona 24]

Super Bowl XLII Party

Sharon, Jack and I went to the Cunningham's for a Super Bowl Party. There were four couples and half a dozen boys ranging in age from 9 to 16. Deborah made some great chili.

If someone had told me that the Giants were going to beat the Patriots by a score of 17 to 14, I would have never believed them. All in all, it was a pretty watchable game.

Jack had my favorite quote of the day. At Mass, an adult asked him who he was rooting for. Jack replied the Giants, the Patriots are cheaters.

Ten Years

Ten Years... Today marks ten years since Sharon and I had our first date. Originally, we planned to go to dinner at Mace's where we had our first date, but Mace's was not open. We ended up going out to brunch at Chevy's.

This is milestone has a couple of layers of significance. From the first date to the date of separation for my first marriage, it was about two weeks short of ten years. So, I now have been with Sharon longer than I was with Alison.

Jack and I finished the day watching the Superbowl in high definition on Fox. The quality of Fox's high definition coverage is just not as good as the HD programming on ESPN and ABC.
