2009 LYB Minor Twins TOC Playoff Game #1

Jack played in the Twin's first Tournament of Champions playoff game of the 2009 Laguna Youth Baseball Minor League Season. The Twins played against the Rockies. Coming into the game, the Rockies had a record of 16 wins and no losses. The Rockies team includes six players that will be playing with Jack on the 10U All Star Team! The two teams met twice in the regular season. In the eleventh game of the season, the Twins lost by a score of 8 to 2. In the fifteenth game of the season, the Twins lost by the score of 14 to 6.

The game was a train wreck.

Jack was the starting pitcher. He struggled with his control and had his worst outing of the season. Playing against a bunch of his Gunner teammates, I think that he was trying too hard. After a couple of walks and errors behind him in the field, he was walking towards home plate stretching his arm, but not looking at the catcher. The catcher threw the ball back and it hit Jack in the face. Jack went down like a sack of potatoes. He ended up staying in the game, but moving to third base.

Over the course of the rest of the game, Jack played third, shortstop and some second base for the first time this season. Playing shortstop, he took a hard liner off his foot and went down in a heap again.

At the plate, Jack was 1 for 2. In his first at-bat shortly after getting hit in the head, he struck out on three pitches against Pat. Jack did something smart in his second at-bat. He took his lightest bat out of his bag. With runners on first and second with two outs, Jack hit a soft line drive over the head of the third baseman off Jordan to load the bases. The next batter struck out.

The Twins lost the game by a score of 12 to 0. The box score is here. With a 10 run mercy rule, they played a five inning game.

The playoffs are double elimination. The Twins will get a chance to play again on Thursday against either the Cardinals or the Braves.
