I spent the day at the Sutter Health Management Symposium at the Sacramento Convention Center. The two day event includes more 2,000 managers from across the system. Traditionally held in September, they skipped last fall's symp@sium and moved the meeting up to March this year.
The opening session by the CEO was titled "To Boldly Go..." This was followed by a presentation from one of the regional CEOs titled "Improving Our Value to Enhance Our Mission." This second presentation was an expanded version of a presentation that we saw at the Leadersh1p Symposium.
In the place of the break-out sessions that previously followed the general session, they held three one hour management training sessions titled "Putting All The Leadersh1p Pieces Together to Drive Outcomes in Your Organization." These sessions were surprisingly engaging.
The day finished with a general session titled "Inspired Leadersh1p" by Studer Group coach Rich Bluni.

2012 Management Symposium
I spent the day at the Sutter Health Management Symposium at the Sacramento Convention Center. There were over 1,400 managers from all over the system. They are expecting another 1,000 managers on the second day of the symposium on Wednesday.
After presentations by the CEO and COO, the middle of the day was spent on two sessions titled Leading Change to Transform, Personalize and Grow. Lead by Gordon Rudow of Bonfire Communications, the sessions focused on using personal stories to help communicate the mission and vision of the organization. I was a table lead for the working part of the sessions.
The day finished with a session titled Radical Accountability - Making the Leap from Individual Contributor to Extreme Leader by Steve Farber.

2008 Management Symposium
I spent the day at our Management Symposium. The two day annual event includes about 1,000 managers each day from across the system.
The keynote speaker this year was Quint Studer. Some parts of organization, including IS, have been doing some work with the Studer Group over the last two years. Studer's presentation emphasized a number of concepts that we have been training on including rounding, written thank you notes, peer interviewing, follow-up phone calls, keywords at key times and accountability for goals.
I went to one of the break-outs entitled "How Mills Peninsula Hospital System embraced the EHR and the Hospital of the Future." After lunch I worked for a couple of hours as greeter for our booth showcasing the electronic medical record.
The meeting closed with movitation speaker Alan Hobson. He is a Mt. Everest Climber and Cancer Survivor. Hobson is a very engaging speaker, but I do not think that I will buy any of his books.

2007 Management Symposium
I spent the day at our Management Symposium. The two day annual event has grown over the last few years; there were over 1,000 people in attendance today. Last year, I was very impressed with the keynote speaker. I ended up buying one of his books and working a couple of things from the book into my business goals for 2007.
This year's keynote speaker was a Brit named Steve Martin. The presentation was entitled Influence: The Untimate Power Tool. The presentation outlined six principles of ethnical influence: Reciprocation; Concensus; Authority; Consistency; Scarcity; and Liking. While I was not as impressed as I was with last year's keynote speaker, there were some ideas that could be incorporated into day to day interactions. I will probably end up pursuing his books.
I was very disappointed in the break-out sessions. The quality seemed to be down significantly from previous years.

2006 Management Symposium
I spent the last two days at the annual Management Symposium at the Sacramento Convention Center. The key note speaker was Mike Abrashoff, a former naval officer who spoke about leadership. He was captain of the Guided Missile Destroyer USS Benfold which went from being the worst ship in the Pacific fleet to the best under his leadership. He was an excellent speaker who provided a number of practical tips. I was impressed enough that I ordered his book, It's Your Ship, from Amazon.

2004 Management Symposium
I spent the last two days at the Sutter Health Management Symposium. The agenda included a keynote presentation entitled 5 Skills for the 21st Century by CW Metcalf; the skills include: altruism, imagination, a sense of community, a sense of humor and understanding divine luck.
There were also a number of booths. One of my teams was showing technology for monitoring applications and hardware, while another team was partnering with engineering to show Blackberries, Toshiba Tablet PCs and IP Video Conferencing.
There is a huge amount of interest in the Blackberries by managers throughout the organization. As I said when we met with HP in July, I believe that the Blackberries are going to deal the Windows CE based PDAs a death blow.

2003 Management Symposium
I spent the day at the Sutter Health Management Symposium at the Sacramento Convention Center.

One of the breakouts sessions that I attended was called Key Technology-Driven Trends: How Disruptive Technology will change healthcare in the next 10 years. Presented by HealthTech, the session outlined coming medical technologies (not IT technologies). If we can figure out who is going to pay for them, there are some major medical techologies in the pipeline that look like they could provide people with longer healthier lives.
