Song for 1965

In addition to the Monkees, Mission: Impossible and Hawaii 5-0, I grew up watching Get Smart. The show aired on the NBC from 1965 to 1969, after which it moved to CBS for its final season in 1970. A total of 138 episodes were broadcast. The series, created by Mel Brooks with Buck Henry, won seven Emmy Awards.

The song for 1965 is the Get Smart theme song.

10th anniversary of the Newton's death

It was ten years ago today, February 27, 1998, that the Apple Newton was officially killed. There is a good obituary for the Newton here.

I carried a Newton for about five years from fall of 1993 to fall of 1998. The Newton's combination of software and hardware capabilities are still unique. Although once Apple releases the SDK for the iPhone, I think that there will be something close.

In Spring of 1995, I took a trip to Russia and Germany. Using the Newton, a small modem and a Compuserve account, I was able to keep a journal and e-mail the journal to everyone while I was on trip. This was a remarkable accomplishment at the time and highlights how versatile the Apple Newton was.

Nate Wallen

Wallen and I caught up on the phone last night. Nate is playing baseball this year at Shasta College in Redding. Shasta College plays in the Golden Valley Conference.

Nate is doing well. With conference play starting next week, Nate is leading the conference in triples and doubles and is sixth in slugging percentage and runs batted in.

California Historical Landmark #604

Sacramento's first post office was located on this lot in 1849.  In 1853, Henry E. Robinson bought the lot from Samuel Brannan and built this three story brick building. Naming it the Jones Hotel. The Sacramento Pioneer Association first organized in this building in 1854. In 1855, it became a boarding house called the Vernon House, owned by Miss O. J. Clark. In 1865, Samuel Brannan bought the building, turned it back into a hotel, and renamed it Brannan House. This building was lifted approximately nine feet in 1865.

This building, erected by Henry E. Robinson in 1853 on land owned by Sam Brannan, was used as the first meeting place of the Pioneer Association and other organizations of early days.

NBA Power Rankings 2007-2008 Week 17

The Sacramento Kings jumped three spots to 15th in Marc Stein's weekly NBA Power Rankings. This is the highest that Stein has ranked the Kings this season. John Hollinger's NBA Playoff Odds put the Kings chances of making the play-offs at 0.7%, up slightly from 0.5% last week. To make the play-offs in the Western Conference, the Kings would probably have to win 22 of their last 27 games.
ESPN - NBA Basketball Power Rankings - National Basketball Association - The debate about keeping or parting with Ron-Ron is on hold for a few months now. The focus from here is whether the best sub-.500 team in the league and its rookie coach will wind up as the West's 11th winning team.

To Mikuni's

After the basketball games, Sharon, Jack, Deborah, John, Cole, Marlene, Tim and I went to dinner at Mikuni's in Elk Grove.

2008 Little Dribblers Basketball Game 6

Jack played his sixth and last game of the 2008 Little Dribblers Basketball season against Holy Spirit Parish School. Jack and I went early to watch Tim and Cole play in the third grade game.

This was probably the worst game that Jack has played this year. He ended up with 6 points. Unfortunately, he probably took almost 15 shots (3 for 15). Rather than driving to the basket and passing, he was looking for his own shot. Although he denied it, I think that this is partly due to the fact that one of friends was in the audience watching the game.

Holy Spirit had one of the biggest most polished kids that we have seen this year.

I refereed the game. The kids are starting to get a lot more physical. I have no interest in refereeing the games next year when they move up from a recreational league to a competitive league.

After the game, the dads played a game against the boys for about an hour.

Song for 1968

One of the television shows that I grew up watching was the original Mission: Impossible series. It aired on the CBS network from September 1966 to March 1973. The theme music for the series composed by Lalo Schifrin is widely considered one of the iconic television themes.

The song for 1968 is The Lalo Schifrin's Mission: Impossible theme song.

2008 Amgen Tour of California Stage 3 Start

One of the Sharon's customers sponsors a pro cycling team. As a result, she was able to get VIP passes to the finish of Stage 2 of the Tour of California and the start of Stage 3. Sharon, Jack and I went to the start of Stage 3 in downtown Modesto.

After getting a bite to eat in the hospitality tent, we wandered along the street behind the starting line. All of the team buses and cars were parked there. As the teams were getting organized, a few of the riders were outside the buses. Sharon and Jack were able to get Tyler Farrar's autograph. Farrar was the race leader wearing the yellow jersey at the start of Stage 3.

From there, we went back to the starting line. Jack spent some time along Autograph Alley. He had a jacket that he was having the riders autograph. Jack ended up getting about dozen autographs including Leipheimer and Cipollini. Jack really enjoyed this part of the day. Given how hard it is to get autographs of players in other sports like baseball, football or basketball, it is a nice touch that a large number of riders would spent time signing autographs.

We moved back to the hospitality suite and got a good spot along the fence near the starting line to watch the start of the race and riders go by. The race had a couple of laps around downtown before starting for San Jose.

Walking back to the truck, a news crew from FOX40 stopped us and asked us if they could interview us. They interviewed Jack and took pictures of his jacket with all of the autographs and then interviewed Sharon. It will be interesting to see if they use any of the footage.

Sharon has enjoyed the last couple of days so much that we are actually talking about following the race for several days next year.
