It was ten years ago today, February 27, 1998, that the Apple Newton was officially killed. There is a good obituary for the Newton here.
I carried a Newton for about five years from fall of 1993 to fall of 1998. The Newton's combination of software and hardware capabilities are still unique. Although once Apple releases the SDK for the iPhone, I think that there will be something close.
In Spring of 1995, I took a trip to Russia and Germany. Using the Newton, a small modem and a Compuserve account, I was able to keep a journal and e-mail the journal to everyone while I was on trip. This was a remarkable accomplishment at the time and highlights how versatile the Apple Newton was.
