South down the Valley and back

I spent the morning in Modesto at steering committee for our outpatient electronic medical record and the afternoon in downtown Sacramento for a digital hospital of the future presentation by Dr. Mark Blatt from Intel.

Although there is not much interesting along Highway 99, I added a couple of more pictures to the Geobloggers site. At the Mossdale Crossing site last week, I stopped and read the California State Historical Markers. This started me thinking; as I wander back and forth across the countryside I may start looking for and mapping some of these sites.

Mother's Day 2005

I made Sharon breakfast when she got back from the spin class at the club. After Mass, Sharon went to her parents to take them food for the week, fix them dinner and spend some time with her mother. She finished up the afternoon shopping. She wanted to go out for dinner for Mother's day so we met her at Scott's Seafood Bar and Grill.

For Mother's Day, Sharon got a Murano Glass bracelet, a couple of DVDs and a paperweight and a paper flower that Jack made in class.

2005 Baseball Game #9

Jack played in his ninth baseball game of the season. They played a fast six inning game. Jack only got up once. He had the hardest hit ball of the game, but right at someone in shallow left field who made a nice catch. He made a nice play on a grounder hit to him at first and tagged out the runner. The game ended in a scoreless tie.

Geoblogging 5-5-05

I spent the day winding my way to the Casto Valley and back for a TAG Meeting; this is a meeting of the IT Directors of all the facilities. I took a few pictures as I wound my way home. I am using the GPS features of my Nextel Blackberry 7520 to get the latitude and longitude of the location of each picture. You can click on the picture to see a Google Map of where it was taken!

2005 Baseball Game #8

Jack played in his eighth baseball game of the season. He went one for two: beating out a sharp infield single and striking out. It is fun to watch the kids pitch. Even after only one game, some of the kids are starting to pitch pretty well.

I had a late afternoon meeting in San Francisco with a customer to work on a service desk SLA. With the heavy rain, the freeways were clogged and it took me more than 3 hours to wind my way home.

Geobloggers

I stumbled across a very cool web site called Geobloggers that combines flickr and google maps using tags indicating the latitude and longitude. I switched to flickr as my primary moblog a couple of months ago.

Running with my Garmin Forerunner 201 at lunch, I took my camera phone. At the halfway point, I stopped and took some pictures and marked my location on the Garmin.

Links to the pictures are included below. By clicking on the link for a picture and then clicking on the small link labeled geotagged under the picture, you will get a google map of the location of the picture. You can use the controls on the google map to zoom in and out and see a satellite view!

Here is a link directly to Google Map on Geobloggers of the spot that I took the pictures; links to the pictures are on the right hand side of this page.

Jack and I went to the Little Dribblers Basketball Social. The kids got an award during a short presentation and then had ice cream.

Kings versus Sonics Game #4

Sharon, Jack, John Muncaster, Joe and Cindy Larkin and I went to game four of the first round NBA play-off series between the Kings and the Sonics. With the Kings leading by 19 points in the first half, Ray Allen put the Sonics on his back, scored 45 points and carried the Sonics to a 115 to 102 victory.

2005 Baseball Game 7

Jack played in the seventh baseball game of the season. He had two hits: the first hit was over everyone's head into right field and the second was sharp single to the left side that he beat out. This was the first game that the kids started pitching; they pitched the last three innings of the game.

Kings versus Sonics Game #3

Lew Gasper, the Sutter Health CIO and his wife, and I were guests of Intel for game three of the western conference first round play-off game between the Kings and the Supersonics. I had an interesting conversation at half-time and the beginning of the third quarter with Doug Busch, Chief Technology Officer for Intel's Digital Health Group. The Kings beat the Sonics by a score of 116 to 104.

Lesson G: Colors

Sharon spent the afternoon as the Art Docent for Jack's first grade class. Lesson G taught the kids about primary and second colors on the color wheel.

The class looked at Broadway Boogie Woogie by Piet Mondrian and Tridem K [shown below] by Victor Vasarely and learned about the artists.

2005 Baseball Game 6

Jack played in his sixth baseball game of the season. He played behind the pitcher one inning and made two nice plays. He fielded one grounder and threw to home plate for the force out with bases loaded and fielded another grounder and chased down the runner coming home. He struggled at the plate: striking out in his first at-bat and being thrown out at first on a sharply hit ball to the right side in his second at-bat.

books, books, books

One of the people that I work with recently asked a series of questions about what people were reading.

What [book] has your attention? At a recent Sr. IT Ops meeting, the CIO mentioned Star Wars, Episode III - Revenge of the Sith; I am currently reading this book.

What are your top 5 books? This answer would change depending on my mood. Off the top of my head, the list would include three biographies, one science fiction and a novel:

There is a list of some of my favorite science fiction books on Amazon.

What is on the nightstand right now? I typically keep a large pile of books so that when I finish something I can pick up something else right away. The stack currently includes:

What is the best book you’ve ever read? I can not pick just one book... There is a list of everything that I have read in the last ten plus years on-line.

Sharon, Jack and I took her parents and her uncle Jim (her mom's brother) and his wife Percy to dinner at Macaroni Grill.

Kings in 6

Last year I was convinced that the Kings were going to lose to Dallas in the first round of the play-offs. The Kings beat the Mavs in 5 and then took the Wolves to 7 before losing.

With so many injures for both the Sonics and the Kings, it is hard to predict this year's first round series. I am going to go with my heart, instead of my head; Kings in 6!

2005 Baseball Game 5

Jack played in his fifth game of the season in a steady rain. He made a great play at third base catching a fly ball and then throwing to first to double off the runner. In his only at-bat, he had a solid single. As it rained harder and the kids got soaked, the coaches called the game after two innings.

Kings versus Suns

Larkin and I went to the last Kings regular season game of the year versus the Phoenix Suns. We saw the Kings beat the Suns by the score of 132 to 107. This was the King's highest scoring game of the year. Mike Bibby did not play for the Kings and Steve Nash did not play for the Suns.

Larkin and I have been seeing Kings games together for twenty years. I believe that this is the eighth or ninth year that we have been part of a very odd group that splits season tickets.

2005 SEAs Dinner and Auction

Sharon spent the afternoon serving as a wedding coordinator for another wedding at Good Shepherd.

We had a number of the parents from Jack's class over for drinks and hors d’oeuvres and then went to the St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton (SEAs) Dinner and Auction. This was the sixth year that they have held the event as a fundraiser for the school and the third year that we have gone. We sat with a group of parents from Jack's class: the Bowers, Sanbornes and Clancys.

We bid on a number of items during the live auction. Our table ending up buying a ride to school in a fire truck for our kids.

Baseball Game #3

Jack played in his third baseball game of the season. In the first two games of the season, they gave each kid five pitches and then let him hit off the tee. Tonight for the first time, they implemented a three strikes and your out rule. It is still coach pitched, but sometime during the second half of season the kids will start pitching. Jack had three solid hits in three at-bats.

Jack played in his second baseball game of the season. He made a couple of good plays in the field, but his hitting regressed a little. Baseball and Dinner

While Sharon spent the afternoon serving as a wedding coordinator at Good Shepherd, Jack and I went to his first baseball game of the season. After playing t-ball in 2003 and rookie league in 2004, Jack is playing in the Single A in the Laguna Youth Baseball League this year.

In the three inning game, he hit the ball solidly twice and got on base. He also participated in making four of the nine outs. In the first inning, he played third base, fielded a grounder and got a force out at third. In the third inning, he played from the pitcher's mound. He made a force out at home for one out, threw to home for a second out, and threw to first for the third out.

When Sharon got home, we took off for Modesto. We went to dinner with Randy and Linda at Galletto Ristorante in downtown Modesto. Sharon and Randy met during their junior years in college. We had a nice dinner and a great evening and got home about midnight.

Practice like the Kings 2005

For the second year in a row, Jack and I got a chance to attend a session called Practice like the Kings. Held at Acro Arena, three Kings players and one of the assistant coaches held a loose practice session with about 60 kids. The kids did dribbling, rebounding and shooting drills, stretched and got a tour of the locker room. Although Jack was younger than most of the kids at the session, he was able to hold his own in all of the drills.

Pete Carril ran the dribbling drill, Brian Skinner organized the rebounding drill, Kevin Martin did the shooting drill and Erik Daniels helped the kids stretch. Afterwards, they fed us dinner.

I was very impressed with Brian Skinner. He seemed like a great guy and was very good with the kids!
