The construction of the San Joaquin River bridge completed the last link of the transcontinental railroad. Building has proceeded simultaneously from the bay area and Sacramento to meet at the San Joaquin River. The first train crossed the bridge on September 8, 1869.

  1. It is sad that our historical landmarks have been left to vanalism and disrepair. However, i'm glad there is still at least some sort of representation available which hints at a better time and age. As insignificant it may seem at first glance, we pass through this area almost every day and have yet to know it's importance. I will take my children today after they return from school.
