Virtually Biking Across America - Day 5

On day five, I rode from Strawberry to Woodfords. Following highway 50 over Echo Summit to highway 89 and then over Luther Pass to highway 88, I covered 26.8 miles. This included two steep climbs and two long downhills.

I made the mistake of letting the software create the route between the two points without looking closely at where I would be going. It mapped a route off the main road in three spots: near Strawberry; around Echo Summit, and; at the summit of Luther Pass. On the side road near the summit of Luther Pass, I hit a grade of 13.5%.

I am now only a couple of miles from Nevada. Looking at routes across the state, I think that I am going to follow the Pony Express Trail as much as possible. The Woodfords' Pony Express station marker is in the right corner of the picture below. Depending on how aggressive I get, it could take me a couple of months to get across Nevada!

I covered more than 125 miles in January. The trip log for Virtually Biking Across America is here.
