Rosemary's 86th Birthday

We spent the afternoon and evening at Tom's house celebrating Rosemary's 86th birthday. Tim cooked some striped bass for dinner using an Alton Brown recipe. The fish were stuffed with herbs and encrusted in salt. Sharon made a great Baked Alaska for desert. The kids had a great time swimming in the pool and playing bocce.

The NBA Draft Lottery

Fom ESPN Page 2 - The Sports Guy: Logic and the lottery:

10. Sacramento Kings
Dead man walking!!!!!!!!!! There isn't a more depressing NBA roster than this one -- washed-up All-Stars, multiple bad contracts, one lunatic (Artest), a new head coach in Reggie Theus (the third one in 14 months), the possibility of relocation within the next two-three years, and if that's not enough, my entire outdoor blackjack table at the Wynn decided at 5:30 Saturday afternoon that the Maloofs weren't cool anymore, that they were even a little creepy. So whatever they do at No. 10, it's not helping that litany of problems. The good news: Green is the best player on the board and never should have slipped this far -- shades of Caron Butler a few years ago, actually.

The VP's verdict: Take Green; try to get contenders to bite on Ron Artest and the just-about-washed-up Mike Bibby (expiring in 2009) for expiring contracts; test Brad Miller's DNA to make sure scientists didn't secretly do a Cage/Travolta 'Face Off' switch with Miller and Greg Ostertag, since that's the only possible explanation for how much Miller stunk last season.

2007 Lake Tulloch Day 4

Up late watching Casino Royale, we got a slow start. After breakfast, we took the boys out on a large inflatable toy for a couple of very long rides. We also spent some time cruising the lake along Poker Flat and checking out the houses. About noon, we pulled the boat out of the water.

Sharon and I packed up the truck and started home. Kicking around where to stop for lunch, Sharon suggested we head to Murphys Hotel in the town of Murphy. We had a nice lunch and then checked out Mercer Caverns. We made a decision that it was getting too late in the day to wait for the next tour and still get home at a decent hour so we are going to save that for a future trip.

We had an uneventful trip home and got back about 4:30 p.m.

2007 Lake Tulloch Day 3

Both Sharon and I started the day with short runs along the Lake; I went about 3.5 miles through the neighborhood to the north.

Afterwards, we spent a long day on the water. For the first time in what she claims is five years, Sharon skied on two skis; she popped right up. Philip and I both slalom skied. I do not pop right out of the water; I liken me getting up on one ski to dragging a sunken log. We also spent some time trying to get both Jack and Tim up on two skis.

The lake has quite a bit of development along the shore. We spent some time in the morning cruising and looking at homes on the water.

We ended up having lunch at Drifter's Marina on the lake. While definitely not the Hamburger Hut, it was a nice spot to sit in the shade, look at the lake and have lunch.

After lunch, we headed back out on the lake. Tim, Jack, Philip and I all spent some time on a tube. Marlene slalom skied and used the kneeboard. Tim was finally able to get up on two skis for a short distance.

We explored the lake to the east towards New Melones Dam. There a number of large osprey nests along the shore. We sat for while and watched a pair of ospreys feed their young.

By the time we got back to the dock, we had spent more than 7 hours out on the lake. Sharon made her cornflake chicken recipe for dinner. Marlene, Sharon and I ended up the evening watching the latest James Bond film, Casino Royale.

2007 Lake Tulloch Day 2

I started my day with a five mile run along the lake. Afterwards, we took the boat out on the lake. Philip, Marlene and I all slalom skied. Tim, one of jack's classmates, made an attempt to get up on two skis.

Another family from the cub scout pack showed up with a second boat in the late morning. We started pulling all of the kids on tubes. We spent almost all of the afternoon on the water.

Unfortunately, the second boat broken down and we spent some time towing the boat and moving vehicles.

The Sanborn's barbecued steaks for dinner. After dinner, the third family started back for Elk Grove. We ended the evening sitting on the deck over the lake looking at the stars.

2007 Lake Tulloch Day 1

After being home from Southern California and Drew's graduation for less than 24 hours, we loaded up the truck and took off for Lake Tulloch. We will be spending a couple of days with the Sanborn's at their house outside Copperopolis.

My sister Lee Ann took a number of pictures at Drew's graduation and posted them on her flickr site.

Drew's UCI Graduation

Drew graduated from the University of California at Irvine this afternoon. He got a Bachelors of Arts from the Claire Trevor School of the Arts. I am very proud of what Drew has accomplished academically, theatrically and musically over the last four years. It is hard for me to believe that it has been a little over four years since he and I first stepped on the campus and he graduated from high school.

Back from Huntington Beach

Up fairly early, I ran a little over 5 miles along Huntington Beach and out on to the pier. After getting cleaned up, Sharon, Jack and I had a nice Father's Day Brunch in the hotel.

We spent the rest of the day at Drew's Graduation from the UCI. My sister Lee Ann and her husband Dean were there as well as Morgan and her mother and Kaylen's parents.

Heading to the Orange County airport, we had an uneventful trip back and were home by about 8:00 p.m.

Disney 2007

Up early, we had room service at the hotel and headed to Disneyland. When got to the parking lot by a little after 8 a.m. and were in the park by about 8:40 a.m.

We started with a ride on the Autopia. This is Jack's favorite ride from previous trips to Disneyland. After this we rode the Matterhorn Bobsleds (Sharon's favorite ride), Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters, Pirates of the Caribbean, Indiana Jones Adventure and the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

We stopped for an early lunch at Rancho del Zocalo Restaurante in Frontierland for some bad mexican food. After lunch, we took the Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes around the Rivers of America. In all the times that I have been to Disneyland, this is something that I have never done.

Over the rest of the afternoon, we rode the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad again, the Jungle Cruise, Star Tours (just Jack and I while Sharon shopped on Main Street) and Splash Mountain. We finished the day with a ride on the Disneyland Railroad.

Heading back to the hotel, we stopped by Drew's apartment to pick up the tickets for tomorrow's Commencement. We had the concierge find a restaurant in downtown Huntington Beach for dinner. We ended up at Luggatti's. Sharon had Veal Piccata, I had pasta dish called Mostaccioli Alla Lino and we split a nice bottle of Banfi Chianti. The restaurant was noisy, but had a lot of character and the food was good.

To Huntington Beach

With Drew graduating from UC Irvine on Sunday, we flew from Sacramento to Orange county. We are spending a couple of days at the Huntington Beach Hyatt. The flight left more than an hour late and dropped us into Friday afternoon Southern California traffic. After a very late lunch, we spent the afternoon in and around the pool.

Drew and Kaylen met us for dinner at the Californian Restaurant in the hotel. We had a nice evening catching up with them and talking about their plans for what they are going to do after graduation.

Song for 1998

I ran a lot to George Thorogood during the 1980's. Over the last ten years, Dave Matthews has become one of my favorite artists to listen to when I run. My iPod currently contains 76 Dave Matthews songs. When I set-up a playlist for running, I often stage Two Step as a song for the finishing kick.

The song for 1998 is Dave Matthews' Two Step.

2007 Baseball Season

Jack was selected to the all-star team for his AA baseball league. Much to his disappointment, we are gone the weekend of the festivities and the all-star game.

For the year, Jack was 19 for 34 at the plate for a batting average of .559. He drew 12 walks and was hit by a pitch just once. Jack's on base percentage was .681 (32 of 47); essentially, he got on base more than 2 out of every 3 times at bat.

In 17 games, Jack played 54 innings at shortstop, 12 innings at pitcher, 6 innings at first base, 3 innings at catcher and 1 inning in left field.

This is the most significant surviving example of a stone hop kiln in the North Coast region. Built by Angelo 'Skinny' Sodini in 1905, it served the Russian River Valley and North Coast regions, once the major hop-growing areas in the West. In the latter part of the 19th century, Sol Walters purchased 380 acres, part of the Sotoyome Rancho patented in 1853, from Josefa Fitch.

The plaque reads:

This structure served the important hop industry of California's North Coast region, once the major hop-growing area in the west. Built in 1905 by a crew of Italian stonemasons, it represents the finest existing example of its type, consisting of three stone kilns for drying hops, a wooden cooler, and a two-story press for baling hops for shipment.

The building nows serves as the tasting room for the Hop Kiln Winery.

Kathryn Nichols

Sharon's aunt (her dad's sister), Kathryn Nichols, died while Sharon and Tom were on their way to Spokane to pick up Kevin from Gonzaga last month.

Kathryn "Kay" Nichols (Age 90) of Spokane Valley, Washington passed peacefully to her Heavenly Father May 10, 2007. Born in Gary, Indiana in 1916, she grew up in the Mid-west with her sister Jane and her brother Jack, both of whom preceded her in death.

Kay married Richard Bell with whom three sons were born; Dickie (who died shortly after birth), David (Ellen), currently of Liberty Lake, Washington, and Keith (Pam) currently of Sisters, Ore.

After the war, the family moved to North Idaho and settled in Coeur d'Alene, where her two sons were raised. She later married Ellis "Nick" Nichols of Coeur d'Alene, with whom their only child Kathy Marshall (Paul) currently of Spokane, Washington was born. Relocating in Spokane, she and her husband lived, worked and raised their daughter. They lived in the same neighborhood for over 40 years years. They spent their summers at their cabin on Hayden Lake. After her husband Nick, of 46 years, died in 2000, Kay moved to the Spokane Valley where she spent the remainder of her life.

She was surrounded by loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she enjoyed watching grow up. She was cared for by her son David and his wife Ellen, and by her son Keith and his wife Pam, and by her daughter Kathy and her husband Paul. She enjoyed comfort and love to the end of her life.

The family wishes to give special thanks to the sensitive and loving caregivers at the Colonial Court Assisted Living Residence in the Spokane Valley where she spent the final few months of her life.

In addition to her daughter, her sons and all their spouses, Kay is survived by: three grandchildren - Lisa Bell Upchurch of Roanoke, VA., Jennifer Bell Sanders of Liberty Lake, Washington, and Elizabeth Marshall Hughes of Sumner, Washington; five great-grandchildren, Meghan Upchurch, Mitchell, Brady and Noah Sanders, and Elliot Hughes; one niece, Sharon Heringer and two nephews, Tom and Tim Frame, and their children all of Sacramento, CA.

Her remains will rest next to her husband, Nick, at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d'Alene. No formal memorial service is planned. Instead, the family will celebrate her life with a private gathering this summer.

ENGLISH FUNERAL CHAPEL, COEUR D'ALENE is in care of the arrangements. Please sign Kay's guest registry and view online memorial at www.englishfuneralchapel.com .

Song for 1984

1984 was a watershed year. The Wallens moved to Bremerton in the late Summer. Nooter moved to Washington, D.C. in the fall. Drew was born in November.

Before Nooter moved to Washington, D.C., he moved out of the infamous Buoy Way house to an apartment off West El Camino. I can remember sitting in his car in the parking lot of the apartment complex listening to Legs by ZZ Top.

The Song for 1984 is ZZ Top's Legs.

La Fuente

After a long day of working in the yard, Sharon, Jack and I had dinner at the La Fuente Mexican Restaurant. Sharon and I were both surprised that the place was essentially empty.

This is the restaurant where Jack coined the infamous "Roar, the People" phrase.

Desperate Housewives Season Two

Sharon and I finished the evening watching the finale of second season of Desperate Housewives on DVD.

2007 SHSS IT Golf Tournament

Five of the last seven years, Sharon and I have played in the SHSS IT Golf Tournament with Donna and Kevin Gainsley (2006, 2005, 2004). The tournament is a charity fund raiser for the hospitals and this year I was asked to play with vendors who made a contribution.

I played with Erik and Nikki from Network General, Micheal from CDW and Cameron from E3 Systems. We started on the 10th hole and were even par on the back nine with one bogie and one birdie. We had an eagle on #2 and another bogie on the front nine to end the day 1 under par.

I have not picked up a club since last October and decided not to even go to the driving range. I hit the ball pretty well a few times, but as you would expect was wildly inconsistent.

USAF Thunderbirds

The building where I work is a little more than a half mile north of the main terminal at the Mather Airport. My lunch time runs take me around the east end of the Mather Airport base and along the south side.

With the air show scheduled for this weekend, the Thunderbirds were out in force. During my run, the planes were practicing a number of maneuvers back and forth over the base.

2007 A's versus Red Sox

Jack and I went to the Oakland A's versus Boston Red Sox baseball game. Tomasin put together the outing for Mike's birthday and we tagged along. The group tailgating in the parking lot before the game included five different families and more than twenty people.

The A's won the game by the score of 3 to 2. Bobby Crosby had a two-run single in Oakland's three-run fourth inning against knuckleballer Tim Wakefield. Chris Kennedy got the win. He allowed two runs and seven hits in seven innnings and was helped by three double plays started by third baseman Eric Chavez. The A's have taken the first three games of the series to extend their home winning streak against the Red Sox to seven.

2007 Baseball End of Year Party

We went to Jack's end of the season baseball party at Mountain Mike's Pizza. When the coaches give Jack his trophy, one of the things that they talked about was his skills were good enough that he probably could have played AAA this year rather AA. Jack has done good job channeling his competitiveness this season.

To Healdsburg

Chabrier has been trying to get a group together for dinner every couple of months, but to date Tomasin has not been able to attend. I suggested to Chabrier that if Mohammed will not come to the mountain, we will have to take the mountain to Mohammed.

I met Chabrier at John & Zeke's Bar & Grill in Healdsburg. When Tomasin finished up for the day, he joined us. Eventually, Bachman wandered in. The four of us played pool for a couple of hours and then headed for Tomasin's house. Julie fixed us dinner. Tomasin and I ended the night watching France play New Zealand in Rugby on Setanta. I spent the night on their couch.

2007 Baseball Playoff Game #1

Jack's team, the Mariners, played in the first round of the AA play-offs against the White Sox. It was a long wild afternoon. The AA games usually last 6 innings or two hours. Today's game went 8 innings and 3 hours and 10 minutes.

With Jack's team leading 11 to 8 at the top of the sixth inning, they gave up 5 runs to fall behind by a score 11 to 13. In the bottom of the sixth, they scored two runs to tie the score at 13 to 13.

In the top of the seventh inning, the White Sox scored 4 runs to go ahead 17 to 13. In the bottom of the seventh, the Mariners scored 4 runs to tie the game at 17 to 17.

In the top of the eighth inning, the Mariners defense totally collapsed (more on this in a second) and the White Sox scored 6 runs to take a 23 to 17 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, the Mariners loaded the bases, but the last two batters struck out. Jack was on deck when the last batter struck out.

The final score was White Sox 23, Mariners 17 in eight innings.

Jack played five of the first six innings at shortstop. He made a number of nice plays, including a backhand shoetop catch going to his right on a sinking line drive and a running catch on a slicing blooper behind third base.

In the top of the seventh, running out of pitchers, the coach started the inning with someone who has not pitched very many innings for the team this year. He promptly walked the bases loaded and walked in two runs. At this point, Jack switched from shortstop to pitcher. He struck out two, gave up a fly ball to the outfield that scored two and then got the third out on a towering pop-up back to the pitcher's mound that Jack handled cleanly.

In the top of the eighth, you could see the kids starting to get tired and everything fell apart. Without Jack at shortstop, the Mariners have not been a very good defense team all season. There were three balls hit on the ground to the left side through the shortstop and third base men and one ball hit on the right side through the second base man. Additionally, there were a couple of outfield flys that were not caught. By the time the inning was over, the White Sox had scored 6 runs.

Jack went 1 for 1 at the plate with a single down the third base line. He also walked twice and was hit by a pitch for the first time this year. In this first at bat, Jack was walked on passed ball and kept running all the way to second base. He scored from second on a single by the next batter.

Drew 1995

To supplement yesterday's picture of Drew's last concert at UCI, here is a picture of Sharon and Drew playing guitar during Christmas vacation of 1995. The picture was taken at Sharon's Shore Park Apartment. There is a Christmas stocking on the couch in the right side of the picture.

I previously posted a picture of Drew playing the guitar in Summer of 1997.
