California Historical Landmark #642

I stopped here Tuesday afternoon on the way back from an executive briefing at Cisco. While there may have been vineyards and a winery here when the plaque was placed in 1958, the area is now all homes.

This winery was founded in 1869 by Leland Stanford -- railroad builder, Governor of California, United States Senator, and founder of Stanford University. The vineyard, planted by his brother Josiah Stanford, helped to prove that wines equal to any in the world could be produced in California. The restored buildings and winery are now occupied and operated by Weibel Champagne Vineyards.

  1. I'm writing a piece on the Leland Stanford winery. You seem to have the best picture I can find of the historical marker plaque, which is now missing. Do you happen to still have the original image? Could I use it?
