2009 Spring Training Day 1

Goodyear Ballpark

For the fourth year in a row, Jack and I headed to Spring Training in Arizona. We are doing the trip this year as a four day, three night event. This is going to be an interesting trip because the group will be much larger than it has in the recent past. There may be as many as 24 people for the game on Sunday.

We caught an early morning flight out of Sacramento and were on the ground in Phoenix by 11:00 a.m. With carry-on luggage and Hertz Gold, we were in the car and rolling by 11:30 a.m. Coordinating with the Wallens, we decide to meet in the stadium parking lot.

The first game this year is at Goodyear Stadium. This is the new home of the Cleveland Indians. The stadium was nice, but not spectacular; my favorite is still Maryvale. The parking was kind of a mess. The Indians beat the A's by a score of 7 to 6. The Indians are playing their first year in the Cactus League, moving here from Florida.

After heading back to the hotel and talking politics in the room for awhile, the group headed to downtown Tempe and an Irish Pub called Rula Bula. Drew and Jonathon rolled in from Los Angeles and joined us about 8:00 p.m. We had a great group for a late dinner and some loud Irish music, including Drew, Jack, Jonathon, Carol, Bob, Wallen, Dennis, Palmer, Geselbracht and Moore.
