Saturday night, Sharon and I watched The Whale. This is part of our annual odyssey to watch the films with Oscar nominations. The film received Academy Award nominations for Best Actor (Fraser), Best Supporting Actress (Chau) and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
The Whale is a psychological drama film directed by Darren Aronofsky and written by Samuel D. Hunter. It is based on his 2012 play of the same name.
The film stars Brendan Fraser, Sadie Sink, Hong Chau, Ty Simpkins, and Samantha Morton. The plot follows a reclusive English teacher with morbid obesity who tries to restore his relationship with his teenage daughter.
Fraser won Best Actor at the 28th Critics' Choice Awards and 29th Screen Actors Guild Awards. He was also nominated for best actor at the 80th Golden Globe Awards and 76th British Academy Film Awards.
This was a uncomfortable film for me to watch. It is very hard to watch a morbidly obese character. Sharon liked the film; she said it was a lot better than Everything Everywhere All At Once. I had been thinking that Austin Bulter was going to win Best Actor for Elvis. Now I am not so sure; I can see Fraser winning for this performance. It will be interesting to see who wins Best Actor.
