Society of the Snow

Starting last Thursday night and finishing it on Saturday, Sharon and I watched Society of the Snow on Netflix. Sharon had heard one of the survivors interviewed on the Rob Lowe Podcast and wanted to watch the movie. At the 96th Academy Awards, it was nominated for the Best International Feature Film and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

Society of the Snow is a survival drama film directed by J. A. Bayona and based on Pablo Vierci's 2009 book of the same name. It details the true story of a Uruguayan rugby team's experience in 1972 after Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crashed in the Andes mountains. The cast is composed of mostly unknown Uruguayan and Argentine actors.

The crash and its initial aftermath are pretty gruesome. Filming included the actual crash site at almost 12,000 feet on a glacer in Andes; the scenery is spectacular. It is amazing that anyone survived. Although filmed in Spanish, there was an alternative English track in Netflix that made the film much easier to watch (unlike Zone of Interest!). The film is worth watching...
