Dinner with Sharon's Uncle Jim

After Jack's baseball game on Saturday, I dropped him with his cousin and met a group at Rudy's Hideaway for dinner. Sharon's Uncle Jim, Rosemary's younger brother, took Tom, Becky, Tim, Kathy, Sharon and I out to dinner. We had a nice evening, Jim told a number of stories about he and Rosemary as kids.

2009 LYB Minor Twins Game #1

Jack played in his first game of the 2009 Laguna Youth Baseball Minor League Season. The Twins played against the Cardinals. Oddly, there was no one on the other team that Jack or I recognized.

At the plate, Jack was 1 for 3 with a run scored and a RBI. He batted third. In his first at-bat in the top of the first, Jack blooped one over the second baseman for a single. He came around to score the Twin's first run. Jack popped out to the third baseman in his second plate appearance. He came up in the top of the sixth with bases loaded and no outs. Jack hit a pop up to the right side that the pitcher did not catch. A run scored and everyone was safe. After the play was over, the umpire decided that the infield fly rule was in effect and called Jack out. I am still confused about this ruling; it seems to me that the umpire has to call this during the play.

In the field, Jack played 6 innings at third base. He handled one grounder and made a nice throw to second for the out. Jack also handled the ball cleanly about half a dozen other times on throws to third base.

Trailing 6 to 2 in the top of the sixth, the Twins rallied to tie the game. They held the Cardinals in the bottom of the sixth and the game ended as a tie with a final score of 6 to 6. Their record for the season is 0 wins, 0 losses and 1 tie.

Rosemary's Funeral

We attended Rosemary's funeral mass at St. Ignatius Loyola. It was a very nice service. Sharon, Tim and Tom all got up at the end of the mass and spoke. All three of them did a wonderful job. Along with Brun, Jim, Eric, Kevin, Erin, Jack and Eileen, I was one of the pallbearers.

We then moved to the grave site at St. Mary's Cemetery for a short service.

After the interment, everyone was invited back to Sharon's parent's house. A nice size group came back to the house for lunch.

2009 Spring Training Day 4

With a lot going on at work, I was up early and was on conference calls from 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 a.m., 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and then 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Everyone else had early morning flights home between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. and were headed to the airport before I even got up.

Jack and I got cleaned up and packed up. Saying goodbye to Drew and Jonathon, we headed to the airport. We made one stop at a waymark near the airport.

We had a light lunch at Chili's in the Sky Harbor Airport. Afterwards, we boarded a flight to Sacramento and had an uneventful trip back to Sacramento.

I ended up taking Jack to baseball practice for his rec team and then briefly to what will be his last cub scout meeting. All of this turned out to be a huge mistake, but that is a story for some other day...

At this site in the Spring of 1868 S. (Frenchy) Sawyer built the first farm dwelling and harvested the first cultivated crop (barley) in the Anglo-American occupation of the Salt River Valley. These same fertile acres ahd been irrigated centuries before by Indians who later abandoned their Canals and Lands.

2009 Spring Training Day 3

At Camelback Ranch

As I have said on a number of occasions, one of the reasons that I train so hard all year long is so that I can run with Wallen a couple of times a year. Wallen and I went for an early morning run. We looped through downtown Tempe and then up to the top of Hayden Butte. From there, we dropped down, ran along Tempe Town Lake and headed back up Rural Road to the hotel.

After getting cleaned up, we headed to Harlow's for breakfast for the second day in a row.

The game for the day is Los Angeles Dodgers versus Texas Rangers. The Dodgers have moved to Arizona this year and have a brand new stadium in Glendale. The White Sox will be sharing the complex starting next year. The stadium was built with a lot of local materials and has a very southwestern look and feel. It is larger and less intimate than Maryvale, but it is very nice facility.

We had some nice tickets directly behind home plate. By the second inning, the seats were in the shade. This was probably the windiest day that I have ever experienced at Spring Training. Luckily, the seat were shielded from the wind.

The Dodgers beat the Ranger by a score of 11 to 4. Veteran pitcher Randy Wolf allowed only one hit over six innings and struck out six. He also had a pair of hits, including a two run double.

The group was the largest we have ever had for a game, including Jack, Drew, Jonathon, Dennis, Palmer, Larkin, Cindy, Moore, Pete, Kelly, a friend of Kelly's, Tomasin, Hunter, Geselbracht, Bachman, Snipes, Connor, Wallen and I.

We ended the evening with an early dinner at Outback. A number of the group have very early flights on Monday.

2009 Spring Training Day 2

Leaving Jack with Drew, I went out for a morning run. I covered about 6.25 miles heading north along Rural Road and then west along the Tempe Town Lake. When I got back, Jack and Drew were in the exercise room at the hotel working out!

After getting cleaned up, a group went to Harlow's for breakfast. Carol found this restaurant a couple of years ago and we have been making it an annual stop ever since.

We headed to Phoenix Municipal Stadium to see the Giants play the A's.

At Phoenix Muncipal Stadium

The Giants won by a score of 8 to 4. Buster Posey, the Giants promising catcher, hit one home run, while Travis Ishikawa hit two home runs. The Giants turned a triple play in the eighth when Bobby Crosby grounded to third baseman Ryan Rohlinger. Matt Carson, who was running at second, went out of the baseline to avoid Rohlinger and was called out. Rohlinger then threw to second baseman Matt Downs, who relayed to first baseman Scott McClain to complete the triple play.

We had a big group for the game, including Bob, Carol, Kyle, Wallen, Palmer, Dennis, Jack, Drew, Jonathon, Moore, Geselbracht, Tomasin, Bachman, Snipes, Connor and I. Tomasin, Bachman, Snipes and Connor had all flown in that morning and showed up to the game in the second inning.

Drew had scheduled a date at a funky place in Scottsdale called Angel's Serenity. Wallen, Dennis, Palmer, Jack and I went to see him play. The Larkin's joined us. Drew and Jonathon played a nice set for about 15 people. The rest of the group spent an hour trying to find the place and showed up to see the last song.

By the time, we got a late bite to eat and I got Jack back to the hotel and to bed, it was after 11:00 p.m.

2009 Spring Training Day 1

Goodyear Ballpark

For the fourth year in a row, Jack and I headed to Spring Training in Arizona. We are doing the trip this year as a four day, three night event. This is going to be an interesting trip because the group will be much larger than it has in the recent past. There may be as many as 24 people for the game on Sunday.

We caught an early morning flight out of Sacramento and were on the ground in Phoenix by 11:00 a.m. With carry-on luggage and Hertz Gold, we were in the car and rolling by 11:30 a.m. Coordinating with the Wallens, we decide to meet in the stadium parking lot.

The first game this year is at Goodyear Stadium. This is the new home of the Cleveland Indians. The stadium was nice, but not spectacular; my favorite is still Maryvale. The parking was kind of a mess. The Indians beat the A's by a score of 7 to 6. The Indians are playing their first year in the Cactus League, moving here from Florida.

After heading back to the hotel and talking politics in the room for awhile, the group headed to downtown Tempe and an Irish Pub called Rula Bula. Drew and Jonathon rolled in from Los Angeles and joined us about 8:00 p.m. We had a great group for a late dinner and some loud Irish music, including Drew, Jack, Jonathon, Carol, Bob, Wallen, Dennis, Palmer, Geselbracht and Moore.

The Outlaw Josey Wales

Running on the treadmill on Saturday and Sunday, I watched The Outlaw Josey Wales. Released in 1976 and based on the book Gone to Texas, it stars Clint Eastwood, Chief Dan George and Sondra Locke.

In part, the movie tells the story of Missourians who fell prey during the Civil War to the Kansas-based Unionists called "Red-Leggers" (after their red-striped stockings and gaiters).

The movie is also interesting because it marks the beginning of the relationship between Clint Eastwood and Sandra Locke. They ended up living together for the next 14 years and making six films together.

El Retiro San Inigo 2009

Sharon and Janie spent the weekend at El Retiro San Inigo, the Jesuit Retreat House of Los Altos. They attended a silent retreat for members of the legal profession; this year's session was titled Who Do You Say that I Am?. Sharon has gone to this retreat every year since 1994, except the year after Jack was born; 15 out of the last 16 years.

The Kings are last in Marc Stein's weekly power rankings of NBA teams.

They almost beat the Cavs at home. But then they couldn't beat the Wiz on the road. Just admit it: The drama of the Kings' quest to finally win a game against Eastern Conference opposition has sucked you in.
