Pluto loses planet status

Pluto loses status as a planet.

Last week, astronomers at the International Astronomical Union (IAU) meeting in Prague were considering a new way to define the word planet. This would have meant adding three new planets to the Solar System, boosting the current tally of nine to 12..

Instead, the astronomers adopted historic new guidelines that demotes the small, distant world of Pluto to a secondary category, decreasing the number of planets from 9 to 8.
