My book for February is The Obelisk Gate by N. K. Jemisin. This is the second volume in her Broken Earth series. I read the first book--Fifth Season--last fall. The first book won the the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2016. This book won Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2017.
The Obelisk Gate takes place on a single supercontinent which suffers from catastrophic climate change every few centuries. This change is called a Fifth Season. The book continues forward from an especially bad Fifth Season at the end of the first book. It follows two main characters: a mother and daughter who are magically talented.
As I said when I read the first book, this is not a genre that I typically read. Even more than the first book, this is a fantasy novel.
I didn't enjoy this book as much as the first book. It is much slower paced. I give it a B-. The final book in the trilogy won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2018! I will end up reading it...
