The Two Popes

Sunday night at Sea Ranch, Sharon and I watched The Two Popes on Netflix. This is part of our continuing effort to see all of the Oscar nominated films. At the 92nd Academy Awards, the film earned three nominations, including Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay.

The Two Popes is a 2019 biographical drama film directed by Fernando Meirelles and written by Anthony McCarten. It is adapted from McCarten's 2017 play The Pope. It stars Anthony Hopkins as Pope Benedict XVI and Jonathan Pryce as Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio (later Pope Francis).

The Netflix film chronicles the unusual friendship between Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis. It imagines a series of intense conversations over a few days in 2012 between Pope Benedict XVI (Hopkins) and Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio (Pryce).

It enjoyed the film and recommend it. I found the flashbacks to Pope Francis' early life and career in Argentina fascinating. Nevertheless, I don't believe that it will take home any Oscars...
