Promising Young Woman

On Friday night, Sharon and I watched Promising Young Woman. At the time, we were making some guesses about what movies might be nominated for Oscars. When the Oscar nominations were announced on Monday, this film was nominated for Best Picture, Actress in a leading Role and Original Screenplay.

The film was named one of the ten best films of 2020 by the National Board of Review. It received four nominations at the 78th Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Actress. Carey Mulligan won the Golden Globe for best actress in a drama.

I am not going to say much more about the plot other than Carey Mulligan stars as a woman who seeks to avenge the rape of her best friend. Researching potential Oscar films over the last two months, I ended up learning way too much about the plot.

Given how much I knew about the plot, I avoided the film over the last couple of months. Somewhat surprisely to me, it ended up exceeding my expectations. Although Sharon didn't like the plot twist near the end, we both give the film a thumbs up. I don't think that it will win the Best Picture or Best Actress Oscars.
