American Fiction

Saturday afternoon, Sharon and I watched American Fiction at Country Club. This is part of our annual trek to see all of the potential Oscar nominated films. The GoldDerby site has the film in the running for best picture, best actor and best adapted screenplay.

American Fiction is a comedy-drama film written and directed by Cord Jefferson. It is based on the 2001 novel Erasure by Percival Everett. It stars Jeffrey Wright (No Time to Die), Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae, Sterling K. Brown, John Ortiz, Erika Alexander, Leslie Uggams, Adam Brody, and Keith David.

The film follows a frustrated novelist-professor who writes an outlandishly stereotypical "black" book as satire. To his annoyance, the book is published, has high sales and receives praise.

It was named one of the top 10 films of 2023 by the American Film Institute. It received two nominations at the 81st Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy and Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

Although it is not as good as The Holdovers, I enjoyed the movie. I liked it more than Sharon did. Nevertheless, given the competition, I don't believe that it will win any Oscars...
