2010 Northstar Day 2

After a late night, Tomasin and I were moving a little slow on Sunday morning. By the time, we had something to eat, got lift tickets and boarded the gondola, it was almost 10 a.m. One of the benefits of Hunter's condo is that you can take the elevator to the ground floor, pick up your skis from a rack or a locker and walk straight to the front of the gondola line; this is a very nice perk.

The weather was perfect and the snow was great. Unfortunately, the lift lines were long. We headed towards the Backside and skied a number of runs. Several times, we probably waited in the lift line almost 20 minutes. Hunter and Debbie finally caught up with us about noon. The four of us skied the Backside until about 1:00 p.m.

From there, we headed to Shaffer's Camp. This is a private restaurant, bar and lounge located at the top of the Zephyr Chair. Last year, Hunter, Larkin and I were planning to have lunch there before Hunter's crash. I finally got a chance to get inside this year and we had a very nice lunch.

After lunch, the four of us skied Lookout Mountain. The lift lines were generally a lot shorter.

We ended back to the condo about 4:00 p.m. went straight to the jacuzzi.

Debbie had made a reservation for dinner at Wolfdale's Cuisine Unique. Hunter's condo has a car service that took the four of us into Tahoe City to the restaurant. It was a very nice dinner; the meal was nice enough that I will probably take Sharon there next time we are in the area.

From the restaurant, we walked to Pete and Peter's. The bartender was the niece of someone who worked for Tomasin. We had a couple of beers and hung out until the car returned to take us back to the condo.

I crashed in the condo watching SportsCenter only slightly earlier than on Saturday night.

2010 Northstar Day 1

Tomasin picked me up about 2:00 p.m. and we took off for Northstar. Hunter has a very nice condo at Northstar. Ever since last year's short and bizarre trip, I have wanted to get back to Northstar and ski with Hunter.

After a short stop in Truckee, Tomasin and I rolled into the Village at Northstar about 4:30 p.m. We had a chance to visit briefly with Danny and his friends before they rolled back to Sacramento.

After some hors d'oeuvres at the condo, Hunter, Debbie, Tomasin and I headed to the Rubicon Pizza Company for dinner. Afterwards, we had a drink at Baxter's Bistro and Lounge. Hunter dragged us into the The Chocolate Bar to finish the night.

2010 PAL JV COMP SEAS versus St. Roberts

The St. ELizabeth Ann Seton Eagles played their fourth league game against the St. Roberts Rebels. St. Roberts has a large team of 15 fifth and six graders with one big player and a skilled backcourt player. The backcourt player has the tendency to put his head down and drive to the basket.

On the strength of 4 points each by Jack and Joe, the Eagles ran out to a 14 to 6 first quarter lead and never looked back. Jack went 2 for 2 in the first quarter, while Joe went 2 for 3.

The final score was SEAS 36, St. Roberts 25. The score box is here and the season game log is here.

Jack had 7 points on 3 for 7 from the field and 1 for 2 from the free throw line. He added 3 rebounds. Aidan started at center for only the second game this season and had 13 rebounds.

Jack and I were listening to a Bill Simmon's podcast on the way to the game that talked about how Shaq had a mental block about free throws. Jack said that this was playing in his head when he got to the line. Nevertheless, he made the second free throw; his first made free throw of the year.

Eifelheim

I finished reading Eifelheim. Sharon's brother Tom mentioned the book at Erin and Eileen's graduation party last June. I was intrigued because Tom does not read much science fiction. When I realized that it was one of the finalists for the Hugo award, I was hooked and brought the book to add to my pile.

Most of the story is set in Germany in 1348 in a small village in the Black Forest. The story revolves around a Catholic priest, the feudal and manorial systems, the black plague and aliens from another planet that apparently resemble large grasshoppers. There is a smaller contemporary story line involving a historian researching why the village disappeared from the map and a scientist working on a model of the universe.

I struggled getting through the book more than a little in the last month, but in hindsight that is more a reflection of how much was going with the holidays, January birthdays and work than a comment on the book. When I turned to the book in earnest in the last week, I was drawn along by the story. Overall, I would recommend the book; it is an interesting mix of historical fiction and science fiction.

California Historical Landmark #1016

The Stockton Developmental Center began in 1853 as the Insane Asylum of California at Stockton. It was founded on 100 acres with ready access to the goldfields on land donated by Captain Charles Weber, founder of Stockton. California's Legislature was convinced that the turbulence of the Gold Rush had caused many to suffer from mental problems, and that the existing hospitals were inadequate to cope with large numbers of people with mental and emotional conditions. Consequently it authorized the establishment of the Stockton Hospital, the first public hospital in California to serve the mentally ill. California's mental hospital is one of the oldest in the west, and early on was recognized for its progressive forms of treatment.

2010 Kings versus Warriors

Jack and I went to the Sacramento Kings versus Golden State Warriors Basketball game. After leading by 21 points in the second quarter, the Kings held on to win by the score of 99 to 96.

This is the first game that Kevin Martin has played at home and the seventh game overall since he returned from his injury. He looked awful. Martin was 1 for 7 from the field, 0 for 2 from three and 3 for 3 from the free throw line in 26 minutes. Not only did he look bad, but the Kings offense looked worse with him on the floor than it did when Martin was on the bench. It will be interesting to see how Westphal handles the line-up if Martin continues to struggle.

Tyreke Evans had 23 points on 8 for 21 from the field, 0 for 2 from three and 7 for 9 from the free throw line. He added 6 rebounds and 4 assists. With the Warriors keying on him in the fourth quarter, Beno Udrih exploded for 24 points on 8 for 15 from the field, 0 for 1 from three and 8 for 8 from the free throw line. Udrih went 5 for 5 from the free throw line in the last 20 seconds to seal the win.

The Warriors played without leading scorer Monta Ellis. I do not think that the Kings would have won the game if Ellis had been playing. Corey Maggette tried to take up the slack for the Warriors, but he went 3 for 22 from the field.

It was a very slow foul filled game. There were 51 total fouls and the game lasted over 2 1/2 hours.

NBA Power Rankings 2009-2010 Week 13

The Kings have 1 win and 11 losses in January.

The Kings dropped from 24th to 27th in Marc Stein's weekly power rankings of the 30 NBA teams. It is hard to believe that they were ranked as high as 15th just four weeks ago.

NBA Basketball Power Rankings
The 13-14 start was hard to fathom, but the subsequent 2-14 nosedive is almost as hard to process. And don't even get me started on what the losing and struggles to reintegrate Kevin Martin have done to our beloved Casspi.

Celebrating Sharon's Birthday!

We celebrated Sharon's birthday over the weekend. Friday night after Jack's basketball game, we went to Scott's. Sharon and Jack made a yellow cake with pineapple and fluffy white frosting. Saturday night, I made dinner, including barbecuing a couple of steaks. Gifts included some pinot noir wine glasses, a book and some Nancy Brown jewelry.

After dinner, we watched the Hangover. After seeing it win best film comedy at the Golden Globes, Sharon wanted to watch it. I was pleasantly surprised by the film; I enjoyed it a great deal.

2010 PAL JV Comp Basketball Tournament #3 Day #3

SEAS Eagles - Champions of the St. Philomene's Tournament

After finishing their league game against Holy Spirit, the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Eagles rushed across town to play Sacred Heart in the finals of the St. Philomene's basketball tournament.

Sacred Heart has a couple of fairly skilled backcourt players, but no size. The Eagles ran out to a 9 to 4 first quarter lead on the strength of 7 points from Joe and never looked back. The bench got a chance to play a lot of minutes.

The Eagles won the game by the score of 40 to 26 and the championship of the tournament. The score box is here and the season game log is here.

This is the first game this year that Jack has failed to score. He was 0 for 2 from the field. Jack added 2 steals and 2 rebounds. He also turned the ball over twice. After playing three games in about 20 hours, Jack was a little banged up (sore heel) and wore down. Typical of when he has an off performance, Jack was very unhappy...

In the last fifteen days, the Eagles have played 10 games. Over the next four weeks, they only have 4 league games scheduled until the JV Championship Tournament starts on February 22.

2010 PAL JV Comp SEAs versus Holy Spirit

In the third league game of the season, the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Eagles played Holy Spirit. The Eagles lost to Holy Spirit last weekend in the semi-finals of the St. Charles tournament.

In the rematch, Holy Spirit was missing several players, including their best player. With only two players on the bench, Holy Spirit played a very tight zone. They packed the key and dared the Eagles to take outside shots.

Initially, the strategy worked. Taking a number of long jumpers, the Eagles shot 2 for 12 in the first quarter and trailed by the score of 7 to 4 at the end of the quarter.

The Eagles settled down in the second quarter and went on to lead by the score of 15 to 13 at the half. Turning the ball over seven times in the third quarter, the Eagles clung to a 21 to 19 lead at the end of the quarter.

The Eagles settled down again in the fourth quarter and took better care of the ball. Jack hit two jumpers and the Eagles made 3 of their 4 free throws.

The final score was SEAS 30, Holy Spirit 23. The score box is here and the season game log is here.

Jack had 6 points on 3 for 9 from the field. He added 2 steals and 1 rebound. Unfortunately, he had 4 turnovers. Several of these made me more than a little crazy. For example, Jack was called for traveling on a made lay-up; I did not agree with the call.

It will be interesting to see if this game impacts the seeding for the year-end tournament. I would assume that teams will be seeded based on their record in league play. As a result, this could be an advantage for the Eagles in the post season tournament.

WILD ENDING!

2010 PAL JV Comp Basketball Tournament #3 Day #2

Playing in the second day of the St. Philomene's tournament, the St. Elizabeth Seton Eagles played St. John Evangelist. With some confusion over the start time for the game, the Eagles showed up for a 4 p.m. game, while SJE thought that the game was not until 5 p.m.

SJE has the biggest player we have seen in the league. While the Eagles have a pair of centers that are 5' 7", the SJE center is at least 5' 9"; he towers over the sixth graders. The SJE center is also a solid basketball player with good fundamentals.

It was a very closely played game in the first half. At the end of the first half, the score was SJE 11, SEAs 10. On the strength of 2 baskets by Andy and 2 baskets by Jake, SEAs led 20 to 16 at the end of the third quarter.

Unfortunately, SEAs could not hold the lead. SJE's center made a couple of baskets and SJE led 28 to 25 with a minute to go.

At this point, the game became a mad scramble. Coach Dean replaced Malcolm at small forward with Jacob, the back-up point guard. Jacob is the team's best three point shooter.

Jack and Joe put enormous pressure on the ball and SJE made several turnovers. After the second turnover, Jack ended up being double teamed on the block. The Eagles swung the ball around to Jacob standing wide open at the three point line and he calmly drained a 3, literally nothing but net. The score was tied 28 all.

The Eagles then forced another turn-over. Joe drove to the basket and was hammered by three SJE players. He missed both the first and second free throw, but the Eagles center Andy outfought the SJE center and everyone else for the rebound.

Kicking the ball out, the ball swung back around to Jacob. He was standing uncovered in almost the same spot as before and he calmly drained another 3 pointer, again literally nothing but net.

The Eagles won the game by the score of 31 to 28.

Jack played 26 of the 28 minute game. He had 2 points on 1 for 6 from the field. Jack added 3 assists, 3 steals and 1 rebound.

The score box is here and the season game log is here.

SEAs will play in the championship game of the St. Philomene's tournament on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. after they play their league game in the morning.

2010 PAL JV Comp Basketball Tournament #3 Day #1

The St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Eagles are playing in an eight team tournament at St. Philomene's over the next three days. The Eagles played Our Lady of Grace in the first round.

Although active and fairly athletic, OLG lacked a dominant player and size. The Eagles put a lot of defensive pressure on OLG and ran out to a 28 to 2 half time lead.

With the second team playing the majority of the minutes, SEAs beat OLG by the score of 45 to 10. Jack played 14 of 28 minutes and scored 2 points on 1 for 6 shooting.

The score box is here and the season game log is here.

The next two games are going to be much more difficult. In the second round of the tournament on Friday night, SEAs will be playing St. John Evangelist. Although the Eagles have not faced them, we have seen SJE playing in the winner's bracket in the other tournaments; they feature one of the tallest players in the league. On Saturday morning, SEAs will play Holy Spirit in a league game. Holy Spirit beat the Eagles 24 to 20 last weekend in the St. Charles tournament.

Next ESPN 30 for 30 is Winning Time on March 14

I have been really enjoying the ESPN 30 for 30 series. After a couple of month hiatus, the next film is Winning Time: Reggie Miller vs The New York Knicks which will be released Sunday, March 14 at 9:00 PM EST. The opening sequence is here.

The festival's eternal conflicts: commerce vs. art
Barely more than an hour in length and made for ESPN's '30 for 30' series, Dan Klores' 'Winning Time: Reggie Miller vs. the New York Knicks,' the story of the clash of NBA civilizations in the 1994 and 1995 playoffs, is minute for minute likely the most engaging, irresistible film in the [Sundance Film] festival.

In the 1840s the Castro House was built to house General José Castro's administrative office and his secretary. In 1848 Castro sold the house to Patrick Breen, survivor of the ill-fated Donner party of 1846, and the Breen family lived here for many years.

NBA Power Rankings 2009-2010 Week 12

The Kings have 1 win and 7 losses in January. Looking at the schedule for the rest of the month, I am not optimistic that they will reach my prediction of 4 wins and 11 losses.

The Kings dropped from 20th to 24th in Marc Stein's weekly power rankings of the 30 NBA teams.

2010 PAL JV Comp Basketball Tournament #2 Day #3

A tough afternoon...

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton played Holy Spirit in the semi-final game. With SEAs leading 18 to 12 at the beginning of the fourth quarter, the bench gave up four quick points to open the period.

From there, things went downhill. One of the referees seemed to be calling a slightly different game than the other officials we have seen during the tournament. The Eagles got into the bonus and Holy Spirit got to the free throw line and made their free throws.

Combined with the Eagles going 1 for 7 from the field in the fourth quarter, Holy Spirit won the game by the score of 24 to 20. In an interesting twist of fate, SEAs will face Holy Spirit next Saturday in the regular league game.

Jack played 19 minutes of the 24 minute game. He was 2 for 7 from the field for 4 points. He added three rebounds and one steal. Jack also had one turnover.

Jack seemed very flat during the game. Poking at him afterwards, it seems that he is a little dinged up with a sore ankle and hamstring.

SEAs then played St. Mels in the 3rd place game. The coaches made a decision to start the bench for this game and I think that this strategy came back to bite the team a little. The Eagles fell behind 8 to 0 in the first three minutes with the team on the floor going 0 for 8 from the field.

Joe, Jack and Jake came into the game with 3 minutes left in the first quarter. Joe got 6 points and Jack added 2 more to make the score 12 to 8 at the end of the first quarter. Nevertheless, it seemed like the Eagles were fighting uphill the rest of the game.

With SEAs turning the ball over 6 times in the fourth quarter, St. Mels won the game by the score of 39 to 36.

St. Mels got a great game from their center, while the two SEAs centers went a combined 0 for 3 from the field. In the two games on Sunday, the two SEAs centers went a combined 1 for 9 from the field.

Jack seemed stronger in the second game. Playing 16 of the 24 minutes, he was 3 for 9 from the field for 6 points. Jack added two assists and two steals with one turnover.

Colts versus Ravens

With Sharon out for the night to have dinner with Janie and Deborah and Cole in Arizona, John came over to watch the Colts versus Ravens play-off game with Jack and I. Jack has been wearing his Peyton Manning jersey for the last two days and was particularly pleased with the Colts win.

2010 PAL JV Comp SEAs versus St. Charles

In the second league game of the season, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Eagles played the St. Charles Cougars. Jack continues to start at the shooting guard.

On the strength of 8 first quarter points from Joe (the starting point guard), the Eagles ran out to a 12 to 1 first quarter lead. As a result, the bench players got a lot minutes over the rest of the game.

The Eagles continue to put enormous defensive pressure on other teams. For the game, they had 25 steals! This is more than twice as many steals as they have had in any other game this year.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton beat St. Charles by the score of 36 to 7.

Jack ended the game with 4 points on 1 for 5 from the field (I credited Jack with a basket that a player on the other team scored for the Eagles since he claimed he was the closest Eagles player). He added four steals and three assists, but no turnovers.

Jack continues to struggle with his shot; he even missed a couple of fast break lay-ups. Frankly, the whole team struggled. The team was 17 for 60 from the field for 28%. This is only slightly better than the 23% that they shot against St. James in the first league game last week. Against St. Charles, the bench went 7 for 33 from the field for 21%. The team is going to have to shoot better to beat the best teams in the league.

The box score for the game is here and the game log for the season is here.

Celebrating My Birthday

Sharon, Jack and I celebrated my birthday with dinner at Tapa the World. We had a few of their more traditional Spanish dishes.

I harbor some hope that I will get us to Spain in the next two summers. Two years ago, Sharon gave me a Fodor's travel guide for Spain for my birthday...

After dinner, we headed back to the house for presents and cake. Gifts included a new ski jacket and ski pants.

Last year on my birthday, Larkin and I were skiing with Hunter at Northstar in a memorable day that I have titled Man Down.

I am hoping to get back to Northstar at the end of month to ski with Tomasin, Hunter and Larkin.

2010 PAL JV Comp Basketball Tournament #2 Day #2

The St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Eagles played in the second round of the St. Charles tournament against the St. Albans Hawks. They played this team in the first round of the St. Ignatius tournament in December.

Jack started at shooting guard and played the first and third quarters. He had two points on 1 for 4 shooting from the field and 0 for 1 from the free throw line. He added one rebound, one assist and one steal.

The Eagles continue to put a tremendous amount of defensive pressure of teams. The Hawks only scored one basket in the first quarter and one basket in the fourth quarter; they did not get very good looks at the basket.

With the Eagles pulling away from the other team for the second game in row, all eleven of the boys played fairly equal time. It is going to be interesting to see how the boys play against tougher teams in the later rounds of the tournament this weekend and what kind of rotation that the coaches use.

In the December game, the score between the Eagles and the Hawks was 17 to 15 at the end of the third quarter; the Eagles went on to win 27 to 17. The Eagles won this meeting by the score of 41 to 4. With seven games under their belt, the Eagles are playing stronger, but they will be facing much tougher teams this weekend.

California Historical Landmark #180

In 1858 Angelo Zanetta added a second story to a one-story adobe barracks built in 1813-14 for soldiers who represented the Spanish government and operated it as a hotel for many years. Because San Juan Bautista was one of the main stage stops between San Francisco and Los Angeles, the Plaza Hotel became famous throughout California.

2010 PAL JV Comp Basketball Tournament #2 Day #1

The St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Eagles played the first game of a double elimination basketball tournament at St. Charles; the tournament is scheduled to last through Sunday. They played against St. Patrick's. One of the players on the other team, Cooper, has played baseball with Jack over the last year and a half on the Gunners, LYB All-Stars and Outlaws. Additionally, Cooper's dad, Rod, is one of the assistant coaches for St. Patrick's. The Eagles will face St. Patrick's again in a league game in February.

Jack played 10 minutes of the 24 minute game. He had 4 points on 2 for 5 from the field and 0 for 1 from the free throw line. Jack added two assists and one steal.

With the Eagles pulling away from St. Patrick's and the team potentially having to play five games in the next six days, the coaches rested the starters and played the bench extensively.

SEAs won the game by a score of 52 to 18. I think Cooper probably had 14 of the 18 points for St. Patrick's. The box score for the game is here.

The Eagles will play St. Albans in the second round of the tournament on Thursday night. They beat St. Albans in the first round of the St. Ignatius tournament in December.

Dirty Harry

Running on the treadmill, I watched Dirty Harry on the AppleTV as a HD rental.

Released in 1971 with Clint Eastwood in the starring role, I know that I have seen the movie before. Nevertheless, except for a couple of the iconic lines, I did not remember much of the details of the plot.

Having spent some time in San Francisco between Christmas and New Year's, I enjoyed the views of the city in the film. I was intrigued by one of the locations: Mount Davidson. I will have to make an effort to try and stop there at some point.

I am going to work my way through the rest of the Dirty Harry films this year.

NBA Power Rankings 2009-2010 Week 11

After going 8 and 5 in November and 6 and 9 in December, the Kings have 1 win and 4 losses in January. With Orlando coming into town on Tuesday and then the Kings going on a six game Eastern road trip, it could be a very difficult month. I predicted that they will be lucky to go 4 and 11.

The Kings dropped from 19th to 20th in Marc Stein's weekly power rankings of the 30 NBA teams.

NBA Basketball Power Rankings
Should probably focus on the recent five-game skid as opposed to Casspi's run of four straight 20-point games. Or we could just tell you Kevin Martin should be back soon to make the Kings really interesting.

It's Complicated

Sharon and I went to see It's Complicated at the Century Downtown Plaza. The movie stars Meryl Steep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin. It was more than a little slow in stretches. Although I enjoy watching Alec Baldwin, it is not a movie that I would recommend.

2010 PAL JV Comp SEAs versus St. James

In the first regular season game of the season, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton played St. James. All of the league games are being played at St. Charles Borromeo.

Jack started at the shooting guard. The Eagles struggled to make their shots in the first quarter. They went 0 for 9 from the floor. The only points came from a free throw by Jake. At the end of the first quarter, SEAs trailed St. James by the score of 4 to 1.

Continuing to put a lot of defense pressure on St. James, the boys started to click a bit on offense in the second quarter. Andy got a couple of offenive rebounds and put backs for 4 points, while Jack added 4 more points including a steal and a full court drive for a lay-up. Jack was fouled to end the quarter, but missed both of the free throws. At half-time, the score was SEAs-9, St. James-4.

The Eagles outscored St. James 16 to 2 in the second half. St. James got their only two points on free throws once they were in the bonus.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton beat St. James by the score of 25 to 6. Jack ended the game with 4 points on 2 for 13 from the field and 0 for 2 from the free throw line. He added three rebounds, three steals and two turnovers. Last year, I think that the most shots Jack took in a game was 10.

Jack is very competitive and passionate. He was very unhappy after the game. Jack had three of four shots that bounced or spun out. He was very mad at the number of shots that he missed.

Starting with this game, I am serving as the team scorer. The box score for the game is here.

California Historical Landmark #195

Founded June 24,1790, Mission San Juan Bautista, partly destroyed by the earthquakes of 1800 and 1906, was repeatedly restored. The two bells it now uses were salvaged from its original chime. The plaza on its south, surrounded by old adobes, has witnessed many historic scenes, including General Frémont's activities in 1846.

2010 Kings versus Suns plus Brockness Monster

Jack is a big Steve Nash and Phoenix Suns fan. I have encouraged this over the years; if you are going to be a fan of a player, Nash is a great choice.

With the Kings running a number of special sales to sell tickets, I bought a package that included two lower deck tickets (section 113, row t, seats 5 and 6) and a limited edition Jon Brockman t-shirt for the Sacramento Kings versus the Phoenix Suns NBA Basketball game at the last minute and Jack and I went to the game.

After falling behind by 20 points in the second quarter, the Kings rallied to make it a game in the fourth quarter. Beno Udrih tied the game for Sacramento at 103 with a tough jumper with 1:49 remaining. Missing a couple of shots right at the rim, the Kings ended up losing the game by the score of 113 to 109.

For the Kings, Tyreke Evans had 27 points on 10 for 23 from the field, 0 for 1 from three and 7 for 7 from the free throw line. Evans added 11 rebounds and 7 assists. Omri Casspi added 24 points on 10 for 19 from the field, 3 for 6 from three and 1 for 3 from the free throw line. I continue to really enjoy watching these two Kings rookies.

To my surprise, Westphal played Jon Brockman rather than Spencer Hawes on Amare Stoudemire for much of the second half.

Much to Jack's delight, the difference in the game was Steve Nash. He led all scorers with 30 points on 8 for 16 from the field, 1 for 3 from three and 13 for 13 from the free throw line. Nash also had 12 assists. Nash is an amazing passer.

Tyreke Evans named Western Conference Rookie of the Month for December

NBA.com: Bucks' Jennings, Kings' Evans named Rookies of the Month

Evans leads all rookies in scoring (22.1 ppg), minutes played (37.9), free throws made (130) and attempted (167), and is second in assists (5.1) and steals (1.62). He helped orchestrate one of the biggest comebacks in NBA history, as the Kings overcame a 35-point deficit at Chicago on Dec. 21, by scoring nine of his 11 fourth quarter points in the final 2:13. Evans scored 20 or more points in eight games in December and has 17 20-point performances this season, tops among rookies.

NBA Power Rankings 2009-2010 Week 10

Given that 8 of the next 13 games are on the road, including a four day stretch where they play at Atlanta, Orlando and Miami, I think that the Kings will be lucky to have 4 wins and 11 losses in January 2010...

The Kings dropped from 15th to 19th in Marc Stein's weekly power rankings of the 30 NBA teams.

NBA Basketball Power Rankings
You can dwell on how poorly they handled the final play when Kobe wound up with the most wide-open buzzer 3 he'll ever get. Or you can focus on how the Kings, without Tyreke, beat Denver and lost to L.A. by a point.

On June 21, 1805, on his first exploratory journey into the San Joaquin Valley, Lieutenant Gabriel Moraga traversed and recorded this pass. Since then it has been trail, toll road, stagecoach road, and freeway-the principal route between the coastal areas to the west and the great valley and mountains to the east.

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

Sharon is a big Paul Newman fan. After his death in 2008, we watched Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Cool Hand Luke. Sharon had mentioned wanting to see Cat on a Hot Tin Roof so I got it for her stocking this Christmas. We watched it tonight.

The movie is based on a play by Tennessee Williams. One of Williams's best-known works, the play won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1955. The 1958 movie starred Paul Newman, Elizabeth Taylor and Burl Ives. Although the film did not win any Academy Awards, it received several nominations including Best Picture, Best Actor (Newman), Best Actress (Taylor), Best Director (Brooks), Best Cinematography, Color (William Daniels), and Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium.

The film feels very much like a play. Apparently, the film was watered down and avoided some of the more controversial aspects of the play. There is a 1984 version starring Jessica Lange, Tommy Lee Jones and Rip Torn which is supposed to be truer to the play. I will probably watch that version at some point.
