Friday afternoon, Sharon and I went to see Verity at the CinemaWest Country Club. Sharon wanted to see the film. When I asked her why, she said "just because." I think that it was partly driven by seeing Dakota Johnson host Saturday Night Live.Verity is an erotic psychological thriller film directed by Michael Showalter and written by Nick Antosca. It is based on Colleen Hoover's 2018 novel. The film stars Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and Josh Hartnett.
The film follows Lowen Ashleigh (Johnson), a struggling writer hired by Jeremy Crawford (Hartnett) to finish his wife's popular book series. The wife--Verity Crawford (Hathaway)--is catatonic after a tragic car accident. While staying at the couple’s home to review Verity's notes, Lowen uncovers an unpublished manuscript containing horrifying confessions about the family's past.
We saw the film in theater 1; it is small and seats less than 50 people. We were the only people in the theater!?!
Sharon liked the movie more than I did. While it is an interesting plot, I found it slow in spots. Additionally, I found the performances uninspiring. It is not winning any Oscars. At best, I would give it a "B-". If you are interested in seeing it, I recommend waiting until it is streaming...
