Juno

Drew, Sharon and I watched Juno in high definition as a rental on the AppleTV. More often than not, I am disappointed by highly acclaimed Academy Award nominated movies. In this case, I feel like the movie lived up to its billing. All of three of us laughed out loud at different times. The movie was smart and well paced.

The Schoolhouse is located on Floto Street, up behind the La Grange Hotel. Bret Harte, the author, is said to have taught school in La Grange. The town of La Grange was the setting for his book "The Four Guardians of La Grange." If he did it wasn’t in this building. It was built in 1875, long after Harte had left the Gold Country, never to return.

Lexus side by side with 1998 Ford Explorer

At this point, I am only really seriously looking to buy a new Lexus 400n or a Toyota Highlander Hybrid. The Explorer was parked next to a Lexus this week and I had a chance to compare the size of the two side by side. The Lexus is actually bigger than I thought. I was parked next to a Highlander two weeks ago.

The piece of me that just wants to drive the Explorer until it dies has started to resurface...

May Webelos #1 Den Meeting

Jack went to the May meeting of the Cub Scout den at Lichtenberger Park. The boys worked on their artist Webelos activity badge, including using clay to sculpt a figurine and making an art construction out of a variety of materials.

They are now second year Webelos and will transition to Boy Scouts in March 2009.

2008 AAA Baseball Game #16

Jack played in his 16th and last regular season game of the 2008 little league baseball season. The Padres played the Astros.

Sharon remarked during the game that all of the kids seem to be ready to be done with the season. They are not focused on the game. At practice on Monday night, the coaches had a very hard time keeping the kids' attention.

Jack has not played in almost two weeks and looked very rusty. He was 0 for 2 from the plate with a walk. Jack struck out looking in his first at bat. He struck out swinging in his second plate appearance. Jack walked his third time up and stole second.

Jack played five innings at shortstop. He has only played shortstop this year; he has not appeared in any other position.

The Padres lost by a score of 12 to 4. Their record for the regular season is 6 wins, 9 losses and 1 tie. On April 21, their record was 5 wins and 3 losses. In the last five plus weeks, the team has had 1 win, 6 losses and 1 tie.

All of the teams are in the playoffs which start this weekend. The seating was by draw and Jack's team got a first round bye. As a result, they do not play until early next week.

This is one of the oldest continuously occupied buildings in LaGrange. In 1857, Lodge #65 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows of California was formed.

The Odd Fellows purchased the two story jail from the County in 1862 and it was used for meetings until 1880. In 1880 land was purchased from Mrs. Margaret A. Basso for $100 - in gold coin. G. W. Jones, a member was contracted to build a two story structure for $1350. The style was indicative of the Greek Revival architecture.

The new Lodge was completed including two outhouses behind the building, on November 13, 1880. The official dedication was held on April 26, 1881. In February 1883, Alfred Warrington was paid $15 to make 16" high gilded letters to adorn the front of the Lodge. In 1884, a front porch was added for $15 and in 1885 new handmade wooden chairs came by ship from London by way of Cape Horn. These chairs are still in use today. Electric lights were added in 1908.

LaGrange was the Stanislaus County Seat from 1856-1862.

Song for 1961

Although not represented in this playlist, I have some strong roots in country music. If my dad played music on the radio in the truck, it was a country music station. Additionally, I was heavily involved with FFA (Future Farmers of America) in high school. I raised and showed Hampshires for four years. I listened to a lot of country music through this period and into college. A couple Patsy Cline songs stick in my head.

The song for 1961 is Patsy Cline's I Fall to Pieces.

Live and Let Die

Sunday night, we watched Live and Let Die. Released in 1973, this is the eighth spy film of the British James Bond series and the first to star Roger Moore as the British secret agent James Bond. Moore was 46 years old when the film debuted.

It departs from the former plots of the James Bond films about megalomania and instead focuses on drug trafficking. The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Ian Fleming. The plot revolves around a drug lord known as Mr. Big who plans to distribute two tonnes of heroin free so as to put rival drug barons out of business.

Live and Let Die was released during the height of the blaxploitation era. It depicts many blaxploitation archetypes and cliché, such as afro hairstyles, derogatory racial epithets, black gangsters, and pimpmobiles.

It is set in African American cultural centres such as Harlem, New Orleans, and the Caribbean Islands. It was also the first James Bond film featuring an African American woman romantically involved with 007.

In addition to Roger Moore as James Bond, the cast includes Jane Seymour as Solitaire, Gloria Hendry as Rosie Carver and Yaphet Kotto as Dr. Kananga and Mr. Big (A corrupt Caribbean Prime Minister who doubles as a drug lord).

After the movie was finished, Sharon said "that was awful."

The original saloon on this site burned on January 13, 1897 as a result of a fire in the adjacent Coulter Hotel. The saloon owner Louis Levaggi, erected the present building the same year for 13,000. It was known as the "Metropolitan." The back bar and counter were purchased from a saloon in Hornitas, Ca. Levaggi paid for the building in one year by selling 86,670 shots of whiskey at 15 cents per shot. The saloon catered mainly to miners and workers on the La Grange Dam, but has always been a place where all are welcome.

A patron said, "I feel we are so lucky to live near a town you can visit and see how it looked 100 years ago. You step into a building that looks, smells and feels much the same as it did during the Gold Rush."

Previous Owners were the Levaggi, Mallosetti, Mullins families and MTC. It is currently owned by Jim and Dee Duarte.

Black Diamond Mine Regional Park Hike

Sharon, Jack and I went to the Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve and hiked about 4.25 miles. We hiked on parts of the Chaparral, Manhattan Canyon, Nortonville and Coal Canyon Trails. Unfortunately, the Visitor Center is closed until 2009.

This area includes a large number of trails. We will probably try to come back some time earlier in the Spring when it is greener.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

We went out to dinner and movie with large group (Janie, Jim, Tim, Kathy, Erin, Eileen, Tom, Becky, Kevin and Eric). For dinner, we went to the Marrakech Moroccan Restaurant. This was a different experience. The food was served family style with no utensils; you ate with your fingers. The restaurant was decorated to try and give the appearance that you are in a large tent.

After dinner, the group went to see Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I enjoyed the movie, while Sharon thought that it was not as good as the first three. I think that she was a little put off by the Close Encounters of the Third Kind ending.

A Fistful of Dollars

Running 9.9 miles on the treadmill, I watched A Fistful of Dollars with Clint Eastwood in HD on the AppleTV. It has been a long time since I watched this movie. I have always enjoyed the music from Eastwood's spaghetti westerns and I was not disappointed. I was also pleasantly surprised at the storytelling and the quality of the plot.

Song for 1959

I have always enjoyed running to the two Traveling Wilbury's albums. One of my favorite songs is Not Alone Any More with Roy Orbison singing the lead vocals. After Roy Orbison died in 1988, I started listening to some of his older music. In 1959, Only the Lonely made Orbison an international star. It rose to the top of the charts (#2 in the US, #1 in the UK).

The song for 1959 is Roy Orbison's Only the Lonely.

Behind this monument rests the historic Tuolumne Gold Dredge which started operations at Patricksville, just east of this location on June 15, 1938. A Walter Johnson No. 52 Model, it floated on a self-created pond of water. It was larger than a football field, weighed over 2,500 tons and $543,148 to construct. The dredge used electricity to drive 120 4000 lb. buckets 70 ft. deep to recover gold. It ceased operation in July 1951. The total amount of gold recovered is unknown.

French settlers originally established the community of French Bar along the Tuolumne River in 1850. After the destructive floods of 1851-52, citizens of French Bar relocated one mile upstream above the floodplain. Renamed La Grange, the new town prospered as a mining and agricultural community, and served as the county seat of Stanislaus County from 1856 to 1862.

May 2008 Cub Scout Park Meeting

Jack and I went to the May meeting of his Cub Scout Pack. The Pack organized the meeting partially as a recruiting event to get some younger kids interested in joining for next year.

The afternoon included a number of activities. One of the dads is a chemist. He walked the kids through a number of experiments, including combining mentos with Diet Coke.

Next, the kids fired the rockets that they made at the April Pack meeting. The rockets were made from large soda bottles. Using compressed air, the boys were able to shoot the rockets as much as 100 feet in the air. Several of the adults attempted to a fire a model rocket for the kids, but could never get it to ignite.

The kids finished the afternoon with a water balloon fight.

Diamonds Are Forever

We are continuing to slowly work our way through the James Bond films in chronological order. Saturday night, we watched Diamonds are Forever. Released in 1971, this is the seventh film in the James Bond Series. It is the sixth starring Sean Connery.

The story has Bond impersonating a diamond smuggler to infiltrate a smuggling ring, and soon uncovering a plot by his former nemesis Blofeld to use the diamonds and build a giant laser satellite that would be used to hold the world to ransom.

A large part of the film takes place in and around Las Vegas. It was interesting to see Las Vegas as it was more than 35 years ago. This includes a chase scene through the old downtown in a 1971 Mustang.

In addition to Sean Connery as James Bond, the cast includes Jill St. John as Bond girl Tiffany Case, Lana Wood as Plenty O'Toole and Jimmy Dean as entrepreneur Willard Whyte. The cast also includes Bruce Glover as Mr. Wint and Putter Smith as Mr. Kidd as two obviously gay hit men.

Of the seven James Bond movies that we have seen to date, this might be my least favorite.

2008 Toyota Highlander side by side with 1998 Ford Explorer

With more than 221,000 miles on our Ford Explorer, the day is rapidly approaching to replace the Explorer. One of the vehicles that I am seriously considering is the Toyota Highlander Hybrid.

There was a new Highlander parked next to the Explorer in the parking lot on Friday. It gave me a chance to compare the size of the two vehicles side by side. I frankly surprised how big the Highlander is. It is actually a little wider than the Explorer, although not quite as tall.

The other vehicle we are considering is the Lexus 400n Hybrid. Although nimbler than the Highlander, it seems very small.

After the Train Wreck

After Jack's baseball game, Sharon, Jack and I went to dinner with Tim, Marlene, Philip and Janie at the Outback Steakhouse in Elk Grove. We tried to go to BJ's Restaurant and Brewhouse, but even at 8:00 p.m. they were quoting a wait of an hour and twenty minutes.

2008 AAA Baseball Game #14

A train wreck... Jack played in his 14th game of the 2008 little league baseball season against the Angels. It was about 100 degrees when the game started.

Tim was on the other team. Tim goes to the same school as Jack and is in the cub scout pack. We have gotten to be friends with Tim's parents.

Jack's team seemed extremely sluggish in the heat. Additionally, they were missing their oldest player who is one of their best pitchers and hitters.

At the plate, Jack went 1 for 2. He was out on a high pop-up to the left side in his first at bat. Jack walked in his second plate appearance. In his his third at bat, he hit an infield single that drove in two runs. He tried to make it to third and was caught in a rundown. Jack and the third baseman went down in a heap.

Jack played shortstop for four innings.

The coaches of the two teams spent a couple of innings barking at each other.

The Padres lost by a score of 19 to 3. Their record is now 6 wins, 7 losses and 1 tie. Although I cannot, I would prefer to just erase the whole game from my memory...

The Lady Adams Building

Built in 1852 by the Lady Adams Mercantile Co.; Named after the Brig which brought the partners around the horn.

She has survived fires, floods and being lifted one story. She has served merchants, bankers and as a "rooming house," and has been flat busted more than once.

The only survivor of the fire of nov. 1852, she was named California Historical Landmark No. 603 on May 22, 1957 before we got around to it.

E Clampus Vitus
New Helvetia No. 5
Aug. 6, 1976

The Lady Adams Building was built in June of 1852. It was named after the ship Lady Adams that brought goods and its first owners, two German merchants, around the Horn and up the river. They began their business in a tent, and later hired men to build a store, mostly out of the ship itself. It is the oldest building in Old Sacramento. The mast was later used as a “backing-up” place in the gutter for horses and wagons to back up to. The bricks used to build Lady Adams acted as ballast in the ship. The building's original owners were importers and wholesale merchants, and also bankers.

It was one of only four buildings that survived the fire in November of 1852, which swept through the downtown area. It survived because of its heavy brick roofing.

By the 1950's “Old” Sacramento was a teeming skid row, and the Lady Adams building was used as a brothel and a flophouse. Eventually, the building was unused and fell into disrepair. In August 1970, the heavy roof caved in, causing part of the building to collapse. Shortly afterward, however, the building was carefully restored as the city worked toward creating Old Sacramento.

And now for the rest of the story

Jack went to three different trials for the 9U Laguna Youth Baseball Traveling All Stars on April 27, May 4 and May 7. He played very well at the last try-out and I thought that he had a chance at the team.

Sure enough, the coach called last Thursday and offered Jack a spot on the team. Unfortunately, the team starts practices a week earlier than I thought and several months ago we planned a vacation for that time. As a result, Jack would miss a number of the practices. The coach indicated that he needed to think about that overnight. Calling on Friday, the coach indicated that the three coaches had talked it over and did not feel that was going to work and that they would have to go in a different direction.

Sharon and I spent some time on Friday trying to see if we could move the trip, but that quickly became a logistical and financial disaster.

I finally told Jack on Saturday morning that he had been offered a spot on the all-star team, but because of the timing of our vacation could not participate. He was not pleased...

2008 AAA Baseball Game #13

Jack played in his thirteenth game of the 2008 Little League season against the Mets. They beat the Mets in sixth game of the season.

Jack was 2 for 3 at the plate. He struck out his first time up. He struck out on a low and outside called third strike; much to all of the kids chagrin, the umpire called that pitch a strike all day. In his second plate appearance, he hit an infield single to the right side off the pitcher's glove. He stole second and third, but got stranded at third. Jack hit a hard shot to the left side in his third plate appearance to drive in one run. The shortstop had tried to make a long throw to first to get Jack, but he beat the throw. In the ensuing confusion, a runner tried to go from second to home, but was thrown out at home.

Jack played five innings at shortstop. Jack made a couple of nice plays in the field. Cleanly handling the only grounder to shortstop, he threw out the runner. Jack also took two relays to tag out runners trying to advance to second.

The Padres starting pitcher struck out 9 batters in the first four innings and they went on to win by a score of 7 to 2. Their record is now 6 wins, 6 losses and 1 tie.

2008 AAA Baseball Game #12

Jack played in his twelfth baseball game of the 2008 little league season against the Mariners. The Mariners have the best record in the league with 10 wins and 1 tie. The team is coached by the team coach for the 9U Laguna youth traveling all-star team.

Jack was 1 for 3 at the plate. He grounded to deep short and got throw out by a step in his first plate appearance. In his second at bat, Jack hit a high chopper to the right side. He, the pitcher and the first baseman all reached the base at the same time. The ball rolled away, the first baseman ended up in a heap and Jack was safe. He struck out his third time up. While I never complain about the ball and strike calls, several of the umpire's strike calls seemed wildly inconsistent. It makes it very difficult for the kids when umpire expands the strike zone.

Jack played four innings at shortstop. It was one of those odd games where nothing was hit to him.

Leading 4 to 2 in the third, the roof feel in. The Padres gave up eight runs. There were four or five routine fly balls that the kids could not get under.

In the third, fourth and fifth innings, Jack's team had runners on third base, but could not get the runners home.

The Padres lost 13 to 4. Their record is now 5 wins, 6 losses and 1 tie.
